Ironing old linens

Why I love to iron linens:

Because my grandmother ran a tea room, and a woman who worked for her taught me a way to do it that I find easy and relaxing, and I love taking something messy and making it lovely with so little effort.

When I wash the linens (damask napkins and other table linens are what I do most often, but I also use fingertip towels in the powder room, and old linen and cotton pillow covers in various spots), I put them in the dryer on very low heat until they are just damp. (if you accidentally let them dry all the way, just spritz them generously with water and continue.) Then I pull them out and fold them flat, put them in a zip-top bag (as many as will fit), and put them in the refrigerator until I'm ready to do them. That keeps them uniformly damp.

I pick a good movie. I bring in a stool from the kitchen counter, set the ironing board up in front of the tv so that the square end is in front of me, and put a clean fat fluffy white towel on it.

I crank the iron up all the way, turn off the steam, and iron each piece on the wrong side, starting in the center and working out to the corners without pulling and stretching, except just gently, enough to square them up as they dry under the iron.

It's really terribly satisfying, and you have an excuse to watch George Clooney rob the casino yet again, or Gregory Peck fall in love with Audrey Hepburn in Rome, or Maggie Smith and Judy Dench have tea with Mussolini, or Meryl Streep fly over Kenya with Robert Redford, or whatever you like.
