Which Double pane window is better, Milgard or the one by Sears?

I'd like to have four patio windows and one kitchen window changed to double pane.

Last week when I was at Sears, a salesman convinced me to let Sears person come to my house and have a free estimate for the replacement of windows. Sears can only install double pane windows of their own brand. Is Milgard brand better? I still have time to cancel the free estimante by Sears if I think the Milgard brand is better.

Sears does not manufacture windows but rather has some company make windows for them. Consider the basic cost, the guarantee, the style of the window and who installs them. A reputable window supplier will have experienced installers who work only for them. Ask Sears who installs their windows and for whom they work.

I own a lot of rental properties. Whenever I have needed to replace windows, I have always used Milgard. They have never given me any reason to consider another brand.

The product always arrives on time, is expertly installed, and the windows have withstood the test of time.

for certain, (A) it would be a new window installed in the bare framing you can get a better fit, stuff insulation in the gaps and have an easier job trimming the interior. (B) Replacement sash kits are utilizing the existing frame(must be in good condition. So if the frame is not a 100% plumb level and square no matter how good the new sash kits they will not seal properly.The sash kits will be utilizing a compression jamb liner which all the quality window companies stopped using on there better double hung new construction units years ago. Personally I like the idea of sash kits but the existing conditions must be perfect for me to not recommend removal of the old unit. The main advantage to sash kits is that you would not touch the exterior and or interior trim. hope this helps

No, I meant to say "glass guru" the chain, not a big-box store--there is actually a chain called "glass guru" which supposedly has a method of drilling two small holes (top right/bottom left) in outside of pane, drying out the condensation between the double-panes, then resealing the window, etc. Guess no one has heard of "glass guru". Replacing my window--will probably need custom bow window made--will run around $5K for the size. Glass guru says I can replace individual panes for around $70 each. At this price I could replace all 15 panels for $1100 or so. Still much cheaper than new window--wood frame is in excellent shape, no rot, just foggy panes. Has anyone ever replaced single double-panes (i.e. baseball accident, etc.)?

Amazing thread. Even more relevant today in 2023 when we’ve lost millions more acres of forest and noise pollution has skyrocketed. Our neighborhood is loud now that the surrounding forests are gone. We hear the highways and interstates. The trains. And of course the planes & helicopters that seem to fly lower every year. Not to mention the neighbor obsessed with his gas-powered leaf blower. What brand and/or construction of windows - aside from storm windows - will provide soundproofing on a budget? With the current depression and inflation taken into consideration I know it won’t look like a budget option. And is Pella a contender? I attempted to look at local vendors like Anderson and don’t see that they even offer soundproofing options. Our home was built in 2015 and despite being double pane they do not block any noise. Thank you.

Having actually researched this I can say that the best windows are quadruple glazed windows. However Triple glazed is excellent too. Just ensure that you buy from a manufacturer that uses a gas fill. I got some from Klearwall and they used Argon gas which has great insulation properties. To ensure that your triple glazed windows are good quality I would suggest you look out for a Passive House certified product

Sears always subcontracts out labor to local firms. Many people have found that the prices for various services are high compared to those same installers' direct prices. And you have less control over the quality of the services, as well, since you are hiring thru a middleman.

And with most in-home sales presentatios, expect a hard sell approach.
