Help! Slab Marble Island top - am I crazy??
Comments (22)I'm sort of a lurker here - we're working on the new kitchen plans right now, so I'm just reading about your kitchens. I did a kitchen 5+ years ago with the help of this forum. So here's my two cents on marble countertops. I have always wanted a period kitchen with marble counters.I was talked out of it last time for re-sale issues. This time I'm going for it. I don't like shiny, so I will probably start with it honed. At the beginning of April, we went to Venice and Milan for a week. That trip sealed my marble decision. All you have to do is walk through the churches, up and down the stairs, the sidewalks, touch the railings, the counters in the cafes- all marble, and all white marble. The stuff is, frankly, bulletproof. And more beautiful with all the age and "love" on it than anything I've ever seen. More than 500 years can't be all wrong!...See MoreAm I crazy To Want This Kitchen?
Comments (19)Couldn't resist your subject line, and as it turns out you're considering my backsplash tile had to chime in! Others have raised great points about practicality; agree that your sink wall would prob be best with mosaics on wall and counter's edge, but not counter itself. Anyway, I have a small kitchen with a small area of backsplash done in the Fern 3 (called "Marine" on the site where I bought at a good price). I've loved it for 4+ years now -- I call it my Backsplash Therapy as it helps get me through the PNW winter/spring/"summer" dreariness.... IME a Sicis color really intensifies once you get a few of those 12 x 12s up AND get them grouted. At any rate, here's my Fern 3 in a fairly sunny-when-it-shines PNW kitchen: The samples hint at how you'll see a real range of colors -- I get a lot of purple, pink, and silver flashes no matter how bright or dim the lighting. I consider that a feature, not a bug -- and based on your inspiration pic it seems like you're up for that! But if you want more uniformity, I'd consider "regular" glass tiles. May be something to keep in mind, though I don't really think one can go wrong with any of the colors, so happy choosing! [I sampled some of the lighter Mints back in the day -- so pretty.] Here is a link that might be useful: My Sicis (and other) iridescent mosaic tile supplier...See MoreKitchen redesign - am I crazy?
Comments (38)Hi - wow, so much great advice! @icannotwait - The floor tile is a porcelain tile, hard to tell in the picture but its a light grey with some blue and some cream in it. I will do a 12 by 24" brick pattern. @desertsteph - The aisle is over 5' wide, the overall dimensions are 9' * 17' and there is an L shape piece I did not include on the floor plan that is the banquette. I struggled with the Landing space issue a lot! But you just have to turn around and you can use the end of the run on either side. Its also a wide aisle though, about 4.5'. Not ideal, I know. @Taggie - you are absolutely right! I actually brought it up to my cabinet guy and we are changing that run of lowers. Further up, @Pence suggested moving the Trash too. So now Our run will go (from left to right) 4 Drawer Stack, Trash cabinet, sink, Dishwasher, Tray base. Sound better? @JulieKCmo - love your counters! they look pristine actually. Are you happy with them next to the sink? Do you have them next to the Range too? @KitschyKitch - Thank you for your kind encouragement! You are spot on when you say we cannot lose any space, despite a larger than average space. I like open shelves, just cannot imagine using them daily. Sippy cups need cabinets! My feeling on the corian, ceasarstone, etc is that they just look too perfect for my taste. I like a little charm and depth. I think they can be just the thing in a smooth modern application, but just not right for my project. Great Idea on testing the color - we are ordering a sample door, so I will take it in there and see what I think. I will also take it to the stone yard with the other tiles and see if anything feels right! @Cloud_swift - I sat on the white kitchen for months (since April!) too. I started getting bored with it a while back, but tried to salvage it with different backsplash ideas, different paint, etc. Still bored. Hence the huge transformation! @segbrown - I got what you meant! Thanks for the kind words, I will not let it hold us up. Ordering the cabs today! Will just have to find a counter top I like to go with it. I have 6 weeks for that. :-) @dianalo - thanks again for the advice on the wood - I think it would be stunning. Just have to check if its allowed! And well, still worried about its upkeep despite all of you awesome pro-wood posters! Thanks everyone - I really appreciate all the advice! and Spence - you just changed my design! Thanks....See MoreAm I crazy to do a White Thassos marble backsplash?!
Comments (8)Romy -- LOVE Danby but it's out of my price range. Although I prefer the Imperial, my husband doesn't like the warm tones and wants to do the Olympian White, which is even more $$$ (at least in my area). I am going to do Carrara marble. Thinking that Thassos would coordinate with almost any marble? Thanks for the link to the Thassos kitchen...I love the backsplash : )! What did you use to seal your Danby? Amy -- any worries about the stain potential with your backsplash? Which sealer are you going to use? Eam44 -- stainless would be very practical, but would look disjointed in my kitchen....See Morelascatx
