bathroom countertop - oops!

I don't even have a picture to post because it makes me want to cry just thinking about it. No pictures were taken of the mess that is my bathroom counter.

So, we are remodeling parts of our house, and getting it ready to put on the market. Making the cut to be re-done was the bathroom counter. Out goes the gold speckled hunk of ugly from the 70's. In goes a pretty formica countertop... the color escapes me at the moment.

And here is where disaster strikes.

We aren't new to DIY. We've done SO much to our homes over the years, we really should have known better.

The counter is a kitchen counter. The vanity is a bathroom vanity. The 2 were not created to be equal. The overhang is like 2+ inches. It looks ridiculous. Honestly, if it were just us I would get over it. The counter itself is very pretty. Resale value? Ugh! I don't even know what that will do to the resale value.

Anyone have any experience in this area? Any genius tips on how to fix the overhang w/o starting over? The hole for the sink is cut already so we can't just take some off the back and readjust that way. :(

There are any number of architectural elements that can be added, however, without a picture. it's little more than a conversation perpetuator.

FWIW I got a Swanstone counter with integrated sink in white. Its solid white (and I love it - so easy to clean). Bought it at big orange for cheap, after reading so poor reviews for cultured marble (which wasn't that much cheaper).

Thank you for all the positive feedback! It's greatly appreciated! The counter top is called louvre white marble (I will add a picture of the slab we chose from and a better picture of the counter top). The shower wall tile is called Style Selections Blairlock White.

I don't have a backsplash as my mirrors run to the counter. I have a small side area and I just used the same stone as my counter to have a short backsplash against the short wall. If I had a tile backsplash like your inspiration photo, I would just run the tile along the side wall. I am an adult and don't splash much but I figured better save than sorry. FWIW, I have wallpaper on that small side. I don't know if you are specifically considering a vessel sink but I think they are not particularly functional - especially in a bathroom that will actually be used by people extensively.

To decipher what you are looking at, that is the countertop on the left. You can see how large the overhang is.

No knobs or pulls on the vanity yet. Not sure what to do with it.

Sorry to make you turn your head sideways. Not sure how to spin the picture.

Add a 2-1/2" crown along the top rail an "G" or "H" molding on each end vertically with plinth blocks.

You can always pull your cabinets forward the extra distance and put block spacers behind them for support. You may have to do a bit of cut out in the back of the sink cabinet. My kitchen counters are mounted this way so I can have extra deep counter top; instead of the standard 25 inch deep counters I have 33 inch deep. There is a cleat on the back wall to support the back edge of the counter, and spacers between the cleat and cabinet backs and spacers between the back wall and cabinet bases so they can be screwed to the spacers like they would be screwed to the wall normally. The spacers are screwed to the wall studs.

Rip the front edge off and install a piece of solid surface?

It doesn't look that bad in the second photo. I just paid extra to get a 1 1/2" overhang on a countertop so that may be why I don't find yours that offensive. What I hate is when the front edge of the top is even with the drawer & door fronts and every spill drips down the cabinet fronts.
I would add some large handles and see if that balances it out to your liking.

What you should do is to call a granite company to let them cut the overhang and do the edges on the site. It is now a hard process just takes around half an hour and cosrt you $300 may be..

I'd just go around the bottom with a little piece of trim painted to match. Or I might leave it--it's not that bad in the photos! But a very simple piece of crown molding (if you can find it small enough) would work. Simple to go with the cabinet lines...

It looks nice. Don't be upset!
