I just heard some disturbing news

Yes this morning on the local news channel they did a segment on Thomas Kincade, the artist. the painter of light.

Well he was arrested for drunk driving but then they said his company is in deep trouble, filing for banktrupcy and he is being charge with fraud.

He was just on the Shop NBC last evening.

I was very surprised to say the least.

I've been hearing stuff about him for some time. Check out the "Personal Conduct" section of his Wikipedia listing. Pretty gross.

I had an experience with a fast food chain. The owner lives 5 states away, but controls the heat/air conditioning from his location. The employees had no power. The district leadership had no power. I believe in the power of communication and every company has some kind of email. I have emailed this corporation several times to say I like their food, the location, but if they won't keep the building at a comfortable level to save a few dollars I'm not coming and I'm taking my extended family with me. We meet and enjoy it there. Each time I've complained corporate has contacted the owner and suddenly the climate is adjusted. For stores like Wal-Mart I take out my phone and take pictures. I send those with my complaint or my 'concern'. I'm rather blunt about it. I went to a store and they only had 1 person working at this chain dime store. I said, "If your store loses a lot of product to shoplifters or if people don't return because customers wait 20 minutes to get checked out I don't want to hear it and know I'm taking my business elsewhere if you can't fix this." If we ALL spent 10 minutes to contact Corporate they'd listen. We have power in communication and numbers. We want responsible businesses and good products. Heidi

I don't see it as such a big line to cross. I think if you are doing new work, and know you won't be able to tolerate anything less than perfection, it is easy to stop immediately when you see any quality issue less than acceptable and address it before it goes very far. It's a lot easier to tear out a few inches of quilting than a whole quilt. The binding issue, well I can see how sometimes a whole binding is on and you notice you don't just love it. Then it's a personal issue you just gotta live with or fix. LOL. I notice I do stop more often when I am making a quilt if I am not completely satisfied and change courses or make corrections. I don't succumb to being tempted to just finish it up if I'm not pretty sure I will be satisfied.

Johnny, I wish we had had someone plow our entire property when we bought it, because then I would have done the same thing. As it is, I just dig it when I can and dispose of the roots in black trash bags. Despite the fact that my husband is our local fire chief and my son is a professional firefighter, we don't burn brush often. In fact, it probably has been 5-7 years since we've burned it. For most brush, I pile it up, hugelkultur-style on badly eroded areas, and keep adding to those brush piles for years, but I don't put Johnson grass roots there. Eventually the hugelkultur brush pile decomposes to the point that the once eroded area is now filled in with a rich compost/humus from the years of piling on the brush, and then the native plants return to that area on their own. If they don't, I collect seeds of native grasses and forbs from the pasture and scatter them over the newly healed area. It makes me happy to see once-eroded areas that featured ugly red clay eventually return to native grassland. Dorothy, I have let it grow on the west side of the new back garden for the same reason. I figured if the hoppers could stay there, maybe they'd bother the new garden less. I am not thoroughly convinced it worked. Once rain started falling in June last year, that stuff really started growing and hit about 8' in height. I hated it as it started to invade the garden, where I'd largely dug out all of it the year before. This year (and I haven't done it yet) I may try smothering it with black plastic held down to the ground with U-shaped staples sold for use with landscape fabric. I might be accidentally creating a snake haven underneath that black plastic, but the back garden has a major vole issue, so if snakes were living underneath that black plastic just outside the garden fence, then maybe they'd spend some time eating voles. That would be a win-win situation for me. However, what I fear will happen is that the Johnson grass will just move into the back garden even more. Scott, I think we ended up right where we were meant to be. I love this land and I love all the friends we've made here. It is a perfect fit for us, but I hate the Johnson grass. Everyone lets it grow and run wild here, so we'll never be rid of it. I just try to keep it out of the places on our property that we try to keep looking civilized. With the Johnson grass, and I cannot remember the exact details, but the prussic acid builds up after a particular set of circumstances occurs in a specific order. I think there's two or three different ways. George, Oh, you know how it is, everyone here lets livestock graze on it but then the experienced ranchers do know (most of the time) when to pull the cattle out of a pasture with a lot of Johnson grass so they can avoid the poisoning. It is when a rancher guesses wrong, or the cows escape their pasture and graze on Johnson grass alongside the road when they shouldn't that the cows die. They also cut and bale it as part of their hay crop, as you mentioned. I know that some of the stresses that can cause the poisoning include drought, freezing weather and excessive nitrogen in the soil. Oh, and excessive moisture. One of the most dangerous times for cattle is immediately after you've cut and baled it (usually the first cutting, which normally is in May here) when there is enough available nitrogen and enough soil moisture that the Johnson grass makes quick, lush growth. I believe that is what happened with the cases our vet saw last year on the day we were in his office. We'd finally had rainfall return here in a big way after months of drought, and everything grew like mad. Dawn

i never really cared for those paimtings. Too formulaic, like they belong in mnotel rooms. Sorry he's in personal trouble.

A few years back there was a Thomas Kincade show at a local gallery here. I was very disappointed to hear that a "highlighter" does all the light work on his paintings. I thought he did the whole painting but apparently not.
The 'highlighter' was there working on one of his paintings.
After hearing the main focus of his paintings was done by someone else I didn't much care for his stuff.

When I first "discovered" Thomas Kincade I thought his work was fantastic. Then it began to have that cookie cutter aspect.

I went to a mobile exhibition of his work and found that he doesn't do all of the paintings. He starts one and an assistant finishes them. I lost interest at that point.

I'm sorry he is having such problems. Most cases like this, the person brings the trouble on to themselves.

Never ever liked his work. Even less the more he did. Now I find out he's creepy as well, I wouldn't have one of his paintings if it was given to me. He's all hype.

I appreciate that he's got loads of TALENT! But.....yuck on his "marking his territory". The art isn't my "style".....I wish him well. He sounds kinda "looney".

I've never liked or wanted his art. Of course everyone has their opinion, and I know that there are several who love it. Either way, I'm sorry for anyone with personal issues.

I used to work in multimedia and I went along on a shoot featuring him and his work. He is NOT a nice person. He has talent, but he's just not kind.

With persons - often it's booze ...

with oil, sometimes it's ooze ...

... and sometimes a gusher!

Which, mixed with water that supports shrimp, oysters and the like - often causes Trouble!

My friend, who loved his work, dragged me to a store opening to meet him. I found him skin-crawlingly creepy, LOL.

There was a long line to shake his hand and get a autograph. My friend was SO thrilled to meet the famous painter, waited in line for an hour, and he was just plain rude. Not just to her, of course, but in general.

He's a complete jackass, and even if I liked his "art", I wouldn't buy it.

I never cared for his work, they all look like Christmas card paintings. I always felt bad for the people who purchased them as they were greatly overpriced. His works are mass productions and he gave off the impression that he did each one,

I have to laugh at myself, again.
Here I believed he was some sweet, brilliant artist to find out he's on the booze, isn't really nice, and doesn't even paint that stuff.

I liked his early work but he quickly sold out for the almighty dollar. So he lost me as a fan early on. Like some have mentioned above he does little of his work.

He's pretty local. We have friends that knew him at some church they went to. They liked him but from what they said he seemed to be a sort of "creepy" Christian if you know what I mean. Hides behind the "I am saved" stuff.

I have a friend who is a Miwok medicine man. I don't remember the details but I know the Miwok were not pleased with him over some depiction of them in one of his paintings.

So I guess I'm not really surprised. I'm sort of jaded when it comes to people who achieve fame.

WOW you guys are the best..I always wanted to buy one of his paintings .I loved the serenity they portrayed.The cost ,to me, was way out of line so I never did.
And now I know I never will unless I can get one for short change.
