Drop In Sinks vs Undermount?
Comments (30)The bathroom sinks in three of our bathrooms were undermount. They had been there for over 30 years with no failures. By that time, the accumulated scratches were making the sinks hard to clean. (The previous owners may have used too harsh a cleaner.) My DH was able after some research to find the same sink model since they were an unusual size. Once he had the new sinks, he loosened the clamps, supported the sink from below, cut away the sealer and undid the drain pipe. That allowed the old sink to come out and be replaced with the new one. As long as the cabinet door is wide enough and has no stile in the way, an undermount sink mounted with clamps can be replaced. Our kitchen sinks would be more difficult to replace because they are sandwiched between a plywood underlay and the countertop. But they are stainless steel and I don't expect them to need replacement. I love the undermount sinks because it is so easy to sweep stuff off the counter into the sink - one can't do that with an overmount. Our kitchen undermounts have a slight positive reveal. To me that doesn't look anything like an overmount. The counter is one continuous level. The positive reveal is a small fraction of an inch of curved steel showing below the opening - it blends into the sink side like in CP's picture....See MorePicking granite that isn't/won't become dated
Comments (44)I am a fabricator. I have been following this thread with interest and find it contains a lot of disinformation and skewed perspectives. Over half my business is high end homes where money is often not a consideration and interior designers are common. Natural stone is still the preferred material for the majority of the work we do even though we provide a wide variety of engineered surfaces includes the various quarts brands and the new materials like Dekton. The quartz products are rapidly losing the panache they enjoyed for years as the new alternative to natural stone. This change has been exacerbated by the emergence of discount brands and discounting among the big suppliers as they fight for market share. Granite has changed in that "exotics" are much more prevalent and alternative finishes to the traditional polish are increasingly common. The buying public has also become more educated and recognizes the actual maintenance for natural stone is minimal unless the material is one of the alternates like marble or travertine which have inferior material properties. My advice to my customers is always to pick the "look" they want and make sure they understand the material properties. Marble is extraordinarily beautiful but it is only a little harder than jello, wicks up liquids like a sponge, and dissolves readily in common organic acids like acetic acid....See MoreMore food avoidance
Comments (25)I can't eat soy and now, since my gall bladder was removed, I find I have issues with dairy. I can eat it in moderation, but for some reason especially nonfat yogurt is not good. I think the big thing with corn (along with soybeans, sugar beets and canola) is the vast majority of it in the States is now GMO. GMO can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on what it accomplishes. "the Food and Drug Administration doesn’t require any safety assessment of genetically engineered crops*" The bad thing is they are now breeding insecticides into the genetic make up of the plant which means it gets into your system when you eat it which then works on your gut bacteria, doing to them what it does to the insects. That's why GMO corn can be so bad for you. Because corn is wind pollinated, cross contamination becomes difficult to avoid. april, I'm sure you've tried, but I just want to mention about probiotics, just in case. Sounds to me like your biome, which is responsible for digesting so much of our food, really needs a boost. There are different probiotics out there now, many of which are formulated to survive the stomach and make it into the intestines. There's also kimchi and sauerkraut and apple cider vinegar with mother, and other foods that are supposed to be very probiotic. If worse comes to worse, there's always a stool transplant.... -------- *Consumer reports on GMO foods...See MoreI didn't realize farmhouses were such a big trend...
Comments (31)Thanks again to all that have taken the time to respond. I love the parts of the book that you posted Mark, thanks so much for taking the time. I am going to keep an eye out for those volumes when I am shopping the used books sales. I love the chapter header about dynamite. ILoveRed- Thank you, and I also like the shed dormer. The gable dormer appears more cheerful to me, if that doesn't sound too strange. I was driving around today paying extra attention to houses and their architectural elements, and I saw more shed dormers around here, especially in houses that just had a single dormer over a front porch. The gable dormers are more common in pairs or sets of three. This is something that could be changed without too much trouble, so I will be keeping it in mind. gthigpen- Your house is lovely! I like the color you chose for the exterior and the board and batten looks so nice. Thanks for taking the time to post those. Advice on the windows is noted. It certainly would save us quite a bit of money (I think it was almost 40% more for a "bronze" exterior). If we did do white windows, I don't think I would want a white exterior, as it would just be so much white. ETA- After seeing Mark’s pictures I pulled out a book we have titled “Down on the Farm,” copyright 1954. I was looking for any pictures particular to my area and could only find the one below. Thought I would share it, not for inspiration in my home design, but just because I love old photographs and figured some of you would also appreciate it....See Moreannkh_nd
