What do you do first thing in the morning?
Comments (65)Make my "turbo-hot" (STRONG coffee!) at 4:45-5 am. Trip on kitties who are expecting me to share some half 'n half. Sing "It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood" (remember Mr. Rogers?) to 2 of them, and tell them to go out and have themselves "an adventure." Feel guilty for not letting the 3rd out because a neighbor complains that she keeps peeing in her flowerbed near her front porch. She asked me to keep this kitty on a leash. :0( I DON'T THINK SO. Turn on the computer and check out GW/Rose forum and IM our son who is stationed in Guam (Navy). Throw on some shorts/jeans and t-shirt and go walk around the gardens. I sell mixed bouquets locally, so I bring a big container and scissors/thorn stripper with me if I have orders for that day to bring to work with me. Then I arrange them and finish getting ready for a day at my school (I'm a Teaching Assistant all year long). Wish I didn't have to do ANYTHING other than be in our gardens! :0) Phyl...See MoreWhat do you do on the first 'real' day of spring?
Comments (9)Wherever you are pesky, I'd love to be there. Spring is long gone and we are into July-type temps right now with blazing heat & HUMIDITY. Ugh, talk about bad hair days. Usually I open all of the windows on the first spring-type weather day. Get out the old stale air and let in some "sunny" air after being closed up all winter. I have been known to jump the gun and start washing some summer clothes in anticipation of even warmer weather. Your sheets ritual sounds devine especially after having a nice soak in the hot tub and hitting cool clean sheets that have hung to dry in the fresh spring breeze. Actually, I'll take a bit of your weather as today was muggy and hot which makes me crabby unless I have time to sit by the pool with a cool drink and a book. Rather, I spent the day at a bridal shower which was very nice. However, the last of the showers is tomorrow (oh, today) so I am done with those for awhile, hopefully. Enjoy your spring weather!...See MoreFirst Timer doing a kitchen remodel
Comments (5)1. you don't need to. painted cabs go great with wood floors, and stained cabs don't need to match wood floors. in fact, matching them will probably give you a "way-too-monotone" look that will lack depth and interest....See MoreWhat do you wish you knew when you first started gardening?
Comments (32)That drought-resistant shrubs and trees in SoCal need undisturbed native soil to establish symbiotic relationships with soil fungi to truly go unwatered for 6 months of the year. Mycorrhizae don't typically need to be bought at a nursery, but all our yards sure need it to be in the soil for plants to do their best through summer/fall. Xeric plants need to get established, then they seem to do best when largely left alone, with not much more than some mulch, compost teas in the rainy season and light pruning to thrive. Masanobu Fukuoka foresaw this in One Straw Revolution (a book as radical in some ways as anything else the 70s had to offer) when he advocated abandoning modern ag methodologies, especially tilling, focusing instead on preserving soil food web ecologies in the topsoil. I doubted it for years, but modern soil science and my experiences sure have made me a believer in it...See Moretylerdurden69
