What do you do on the first 'real' day of spring?

After what seems like months of rain, we finally got a break today and have a GOOD spring day. The kind of day where you open all the windows and air the place out.

Some of you have been experiencing this for a while, so what do/did you do for the first 'real' day of spring?

I stripped our bed of all the linens, including the mattress pad & pillows, took it all to the laundromat where they have those ginormous washers and washed everything. Then I dried it just enough to bring it home and hung it all outside in the fresh air & sunshine.

Then my sons former GF and I took my Granddog Ruphous and my dog Aurora to the dog washing place where they got scrubbed up right and ready for flea season.

This evening we're going to grill some steaks, hit the hot tub and sleep like babies on the fresh linens.

Spring? What a distant memory! We've had the a/c on 24/7 for at least 6 weeks now. Humidity makes it a necessity.

If it were still spring-like without the humidity I'd have the windows and doors open and we'd be eating dinner on the screened porch every night with a cooling breeze from the ceiling fans. I'm already looking forward to fall ... meaning late October.

I do just as you said, Open the windows, let the air in and breeeeeaaaathhh. For some reason, I also like to make hamburgers and fresh veggies for dinner that first day.

This is the time of year I wish we could import all you frozen-ground gardeners to come out here and help. December-March is one of the busiest times of year in coastal California. Wet leaves to rake, bushes to prune, weeds to pull, citrus fruit to pick, new plants to put in, etc. etc. etc. New growth is already appearing on the roses which were pruned back just recently, near the end of January. The freesias are a month ahead of themselves - we had an early hard rain in October that woke things up - so those flower stalks have just begun to raise their heads. It'll be another couple of weeks before they start to open, though. Freesias are my favorite spring flower - fragrant and return reliably! Last year I grew a bunch of freesias in a pot and didn't realize the colors would cross. They were supposed to be neat waves of red, white and purple. But some of the purple became streaked with white, sort of odd but pretty: Goodness knows what the freesias will look like this year, LOL. If I get anything interesting in the color mixing, I'll post a 2010 photo in a month or so.

Glad you've joined us, gayled, welcome to the NE forum! My DH and I are retired. We work together in the gardens... our spring techniques are pretty simple. 1. Clean up dead leaves and foliage and weed underneath plants... but not as early as we'd like this year. Probably not until April .... if we get more snow this week. 2. One of our earliest tasks every spring.... amend the soil. I think that's the best thing you can do for the gardens. We get free compost from our town.... dig it and take it. We've done this for the last eight years and it's really helped improve the gardens. While it's not exactly "organic" because the compost is made from garden waste that people bag and the city picks up, "free" makes it worthwhile. 3. We like to use bark mulch and I use cocoa mulch in a few special areas, but this has gotten expensive as our gardens have grown. We've found that the compost works like mulch by breaking down over the season. So we mulch every other year. 3. Fertilize? No, not even our roses. I think good soil is better than chemical applications. I learned about composting from my mother who was a wonderful gardener. Mom collected coffee grounds in one container (for her Mt. Laurels and rhododendrons) and egg shells & other wastes that she'd spread around her flower beds. Over 40 years of this gave her a yard with deep, dark soil and lots of worms. 4. My DH put in an irrigation system several years ago and he checks this early in the spring. We have a long yard with gardens down one side and around a garden shed. wow! I wish I had that much done at home. Instead, I'm waiting on a flight home from a ski trip with my family and I don't think I have enough energy to dust a table. I'm so happy to be back where I can breath easily too. When I get back I'm going to unpack, grab a bite to eat and find my favorite bed. That is my March 1st in a nut shell.

I'm not sure it was my first day of school but it was definitely one of the first days of kindergarten. My cousin has just moved to my town and we were fast friends. We ruled the kindergarten classroom because we were the only ones that knew someone. Our mom's had to have the teachers put us in different classrooms after kindergarten because we wouldn't let anyone else play with us and we were very bossy. I'm not sure my mom did the right thing on that one. Both of us were very shy after that and didn't make friends easily until much later in school. My DH remembers his first days vividly. His mom walked him and his twin brother to school and they both followed her back home. They didn't want to stay there. This went on for several days and she'd walk them both back to school only to get home and find them back at home. Finally one day when they showed up yet again at home, she put them outside (it was a cold day) and wouldn't let them back in. They finally got cold and walked to school and stayed the rest of the time. I think that is the funniest thing ever. I can just imagine getting home after taking the little rascals to school only to find that they'd beat her home. Today they'd probably call social services or something.

Played Aerobie barefoot. The feel of fresh grass on the tootsies makes me feel like a kid again! Aired out the house and grilled that week too.

Today I greased up: Deep woods Off and Spf 50 Sunscreen and spent the day working in the yard- humidity was incredible and it was about 94 today. I was in the sun. We had a brief thunderstorm but I went back out afterwards- not gonna waste getting so dirty.
Spring? Oh, I don't remember when that was but I think it late February! This is Summer!

First really nice day- stayed outside until it was almost dark- didnt want to waste a minute of sun and breeze and almost painfully blue sky. Didnt do much- just dreamed, read and poked around in the yard, talking to the neighbors that I haven't really seen since the blizzards.
Today it was warm and a bit humid but cool enough to have the doors and windows wide open and a fan running- felt good. We have been running the AC now and again since Mid May.

Dang! And here I thought we were just a little behind! The newscasters have been saying people are calling this Juneuary, since it's been so cold and rainy. This IS unusual for us, but it's not uncommon for us to wear sweaters on 4th of July BBQs. I probably spoke too soon today, it clouded up a bit this afternoon, but it's still pretty warm.

Our weather has been pretty weird too. March was beautiful then April and May felt a lot like fall or winter again with lots of cold days. The poor foliage around here doesn't know what season it really is!

Wherever you are pesky, I'd love to be there. Spring is long gone and we are into July-type temps right now with blazing heat & HUMIDITY. Ugh, talk about bad hair days.

Usually I open all of the windows on the first spring-type weather day. Get out the old stale air and let in some "sunny" air after being closed up all winter. I have been known to jump the gun and start washing some summer clothes in anticipation of even warmer weather.

Your sheets ritual sounds devine especially after having a nice soak in the hot tub and hitting cool clean sheets that have hung to dry in the fresh spring breeze.

Actually, I'll take a bit of your weather as today was muggy and hot which makes me crabby unless I have time to sit by the pool with a cool drink and a book. Rather, I spent the day at a bridal shower which was very nice. However, the last of the showers is tomorrow (oh, today) so I am done with those for awhile, hopefully.

Ya just can't compare the gorgeous PNW with the MidAtlanic region Pesky!
I remember wearing sweatshirts on the Wash and Oregon coast on our trip west years ago- in the 3rd week of July!
We bought more sweatshirts to wear than anything- since we each only packed one cold weather outfit!
