Granite update...Good News...I guess?

Well,

perhaps the Granite Gods are being benevolent this week...I don't know?

I just got a call from my kitchen place, and she says "I have good news".

Yeah...?

"We're going to completely redo your granite."

So, that means granite order being sent to China next week, and then waiting up to 3 months? for new granite to arrive and then get installed again ! If you haven't been following, I ordered my original granite May 08/2007, it was finally installed mid-December. Quality issues like peninsula and part of another counter having pattern run in opposite directions, and sanding marks, etc meant a couple of pieces had to be reordered. So, Monday, April 14th they came and installed new granite peninsula and pony wall. Pony wall is perfect, peninsula is a different colour and pattern,and bull-nose edge is different thickness from rest of counter.

So, they are going to pull it all out and start over. I've said keep Pony Wall in LR, it's perfect. But now, DH and I have to discuss whether we want to go with color and pattern of attempt #1 or #2, or perhaps start over with a completely different granite! Though nearly all of upstairs has been repainted, and colour choice was based on tying in with granite!

Of course, this is days after I'd finally found the perfect backsplash tile, which came with coordinating 16 X 16" tiles I could have used for the FP hearth in LR, then could start to finish that room off, get flooring down, buy new area rug, curtains, etc.

And, needless to say, now we can't finish off kitchen... DH was waiting till granite was in to put up toe kicks, back of peninsula, and baseboard molding on floor. Window sills and backsplash were going to be made of granite- they were to start working on those this week with possible installation this Friday- now of course that has to wait...

Oh, and being a granite neophyte, I ordered bull-nosed edging the first time, now maybe I should change that too? If the GG are giving me a redo...maybe I should rethink the whole thing?

On another note...carpenter is avoiding my calls, he promised to have cabinets and shelves finished in 2 weeks, when he came to pick up doors on February 14th! Last time I checked that was more than 2 weeks ago!

But, I love my pony wall! I don't think it will be a huge deal if granite in kitchen is different? Color of granite goes perfectly with my furniture and paintings so I really don't want to fix something that ain't broke!

Raehelen: You poor thang! Maybe you should change your granite choice - maybe you have bad "ju ju" with what you have now (you have been through a LOT!)
You're right, the stuff on the pony wall looks great.
What granite is that anyway?

Funny you should say that...my kitchen guy says my kitchen is cursed- and so he doesn't feel quite so bad about all the granite problems... Started with OTR MW that took almost exactly a year dealing with the store I bought it from before it could be installed- first it didn't work (had it stored in garage for several months before I tried it on a whim)- long long story on how it took forever to get serviced- got fixed and when we were going to install realized there weren't any brackets- that took months and sooo many emails and phone calls to get satisfaction- then parts were on back order... Then new windows that were also ordered May 08, 2007, didn't all finally get installed until November! We went the whole summer with plastic sheeting for my kitchen windows! Just phoned Electrolux today to inquire as to where my replacement grates for our brand new gas stove are (been waiting since January)- enamel is chipping off...supposedly on truck from Quebec to Ontario, and they should be Purolated here in BC either this week or next...

Just got a bill in the mail yesterday from roofing company that came three times to fix leak- over $1000 later to tell us chimney is causing the problem, so I have a lovely blue tarp over my chimney and leak still not fixed! Arghhh!

Oh, you wanted to know the name of the granite?
Butterfly Blue- it's actually quite pretty- we prefer the colouring of batch #2. They're calling the newer rock Butterfly Blue New.

We recently had Giallo Ornamental granite installed in our new kitchen. I have posted a link to an earlier GW thread that shows the kitchen design. Before they fabricated and installed the granite, I asked several times about seam placement. I also asked about maintaining the flow/directionality of the pattern. The fabricator let us pick which slab to use for the large peninsula/table. In the L-shape part of the kitchen (with the cooktop and sink), he proposed putting a seam right at the edge where the cooktop begins, because the seam is smaller there (the cooktop overlaps it). He assured me they would match up the pattern. After it was installed, I realized the pattern switches at the cooktop seam. When you are standing at the peninsula or at the sink, it flows horizontally. When you are standing at the cooktop, the pattern to the left of the cooktop runs vertically (perpendicular to the wall) while it runs horizontally at the cooktop and to the right of the cooktop. When the fabricator came out to check some other problems, my husband mentioned it to him. He basically said he did not know why the guy cutting the granite did not turn it/maintain the pattern. My husband did not push him on it at the time. I've been trying to live with it, and it doesn't bother me most of the time. But when I think about it, or look right at it, I get pretty irritated. They haven't sent us the final bill because we are still waiting for estimates for some floor damage the crew inflicted. Part of me really wants to bring up this flow/directionality problem again...it's bothering me more than the floor at this point. So, I guess my main question is whether the change in pattern direction is an obvious indication of sloppy or substandard work? Or am I being too picky? Knowing what is generally accepted and expected will help me figure out how much to push these guys. I can post pictures of the actual seam this evening. Thanks so much everyone for your words of support. Doctors are saying that she will probably be sent home today. Hubby thinks that's because they know more than they're willing to say. He's been looking at hospital / adjustable beds on CL for her. No worries on the keeping her home front. Hubby's family is Filipino and they have a very, very strong tradition / belief in keeping things at home with family (sometimes I think too strong but that's another matter). The troops are gathering and battle plans are being formulated. In the meantime, I now have more time to cherry-pick the things off of CL I want for our remodeling projects. It also means I have more time to convince Hubby that soapstone and marble for our bathrooms is a Good Idea.

Ok so I didnt really read all of the posts I got to where Bm was going to email school or something like that that you couldnt do reading Friday. I just wanted to let you know that in schools the great thing is that anyone who pasts a backround check (I am pretty sure that is common in schools now) anyone... and I mean ANYONE can volunteer at the school. It is not a custodial issue or a step parent issue or really anything of the sort. It boils down to someone supporting their local school. I always always assume the kids want one of their parents to go with them on field trips parents day ... whatever... and unsually they do (although usually BM blows it off, they usually ask her first).....but if they ask me directly I absolutely grant their request. It came from them and I did not ask for it. I feel it is only right for me to do something I would love to do for someone I have come to love. Everytime this has been an issue with the kids I have always asked them... Did you have Fun? (answer almost always yes) ... well I did too and I am very flattered that you asked me... if your mom feels sad about that I am sorry but we had a great time together (change subjec to fun things we did together on field trip remember when you did xyz).... Doesnt discount moms feelings but doesnt put a bad spin on our time together.

I've got the double Cafe Brown Silgranit sink, a medium cafe brown Silgranit for a prep, ORB fixtures and SS appliances. I am thrilled with them all. The sinks are so easy to keep looking clean. I did order a grid for one side of my double, which I find I use infrequently to drain clean dishes. And I use the prep sink grid all of the time to wash fruits and veggies. I think you will be very happy with your choices! I was close to going with a large sink bowl clean up sink, but I knew I would go crazy not having a dedicated spot for washing on one side and rinsing on the other. I am so glad I stuck with my double bowl set up. I am sure you'll be thrilled once you are using everything and in the new space!

Man! You sure have had a rough go of it! Makes me feel even more grateful than I already did that ours is going so (relatively) smoothly. I can't even imagine being in your position and living to tell the story! Hubby would've had to put me in the rubber room if I had to go through what you've been through. Kudos to you for maintaining sanity!

Back to the granite - I think that based on the pic, you could go with just about anything you like, since that little bit on the pony wall doesn't look like it's directly in the kitchen. Have you considered going with something that is "in stock" rather than having something ordered from China and having to wait 3 months? Butterfly Blue isn't some kind of rare granite is it? For me, I think I'd rather just go for something that is THERE and can be templated and installed in much lesser time. Especially considering the duration of your project already. Geez.. unreal!
