If the suit is indeed filed, I wish you luck with it. It won't change the news about the cancer, but at least your DH's mother may get some compensation and, more importantly, it will bring the situation into the open so hopefully it won't happen to someone else.

Oh pbrisjar... I am so sorry to hear this news. I know first hand how exhausting the health care advocate position can be; yet none is more important when a family member takes ill. The medical malpractice thing down here in Fl. is a very difficult road; we investigated it. Though to outsiders it seemed a definate avenue since the road of care almost resulted in DH's loss of leg; the way Fl law is structured makes it very difficult to prove. Focus on your family and know that you are in our thoughts and prayers.

Cancer sucks - I've had it, so I know. It tries it's darnest to suck the life (and I mean more than cells) out of the inflicted as well as every single loved one around him/her trying to care for them. We were delayed a short time this fall/winter because doctors were concerned about a recurrence - and I couldn't think straight, let alone pick out knobs! You have the right attitude by staying positive about your current kitchen and the eventual kitchen. HANG IN THERE

Actually I have a couple records...slowest kitchen remodel in GW history :oP And during the remodel, longest and most hospital stays most likely. Don't let Mom beat me on that one my dear. Keep her home (wherever that is) as long as possible and tell DH to give her every second he has. Neither of you will regret it. She has a tough road ahead...family will mean everything to her!

My dearest friend has lukemia. She won't live forever, though she's doing amazingly well. I treasure every second I can get with her. It's so much more important than a kitchen :)

I wish I could say anything that would make this all better...but as you probably know, that's nearly impossible. So I'm just going to send you a huge hug via GW and tell you to email whenever you need to talk!

My father just died (3 weeks) from prostate cancer - supposedly declared cured 10 years ago and this was a recurrence that had metastasized to multiple locations before discovery. There are complicated "reasons" but I did feel it was odd that it got that far in a guy followed by several different physicians, including a urologist, with a history of prostate cancer.

My first husband died at 34 from adrenal cancer. I felt his physician was partly responsible. I decided not to pursue after he took responsibility for his errors - his physician was also very young.

Thinking of you and your family during this difficult time. You've been a tremendous support to so many people on this forum -- I hope we can be a big support to YOU now.

I echo that -- we went through this with my 92 year old dad two years ago. When his 95-year-old wife could no longer manage, he moved in with us and between us and Hospice, his quality of life was as good as it could be. It wasn't always easy, but the overriding feeling was that we were so blessed to be able to care for him, and he and I had some sweet moments and wonderful talks those last months.

Kitchens can wait . . . this can't. Blessings to you as you walk this difficult path.

I'm so sorry to hear this. Yes, do keep her home as long as possible. We lost my dad to cancer not quite 4 months ago after 6 long years. He died at home where he wanted to be.

Doctors are saying that she will probably be sent home today. Hubby thinks that's because they know more than they're willing to say. He's been looking at hospital / adjustable beds on CL for her.

No worries on the keeping her home front. Hubby's family is Filipino and they have a very, very strong tradition / belief in keeping things at home with family (sometimes I think too strong but that's another matter). The troops are gathering and battle plans are being formulated.

In the meantime, I now have more time to cherry-pick the things off of CL I want for our remodeling projects. It also means I have more time to convince Hubby that soapstone and marble for our bathrooms is a Good Idea.

I was really sorry to read this news, too. Sounds like MIL has a strong support system; I know that will mean a lot to her. I pray that God will strengthen and comfort all of you, and take that cancer away.

I too am so sorry to hear about your MIL. One thing your husband could do is check with her doctor. I believe he can prescribe a hospital bed for her and it is covered either by her insurance or Medicare. I know when my MIL had a stroke they were able to get a hospital bed this way.

Sad rotten news. Best wishes to all of you. As you say, at least you do have a functional kitchen, and you can always come immerse yourself in the happy possibilities this forum represents. You know, you'll likely end up with a somewhat different kitchen as your choices continue to evolve. In the meantime, how about painting something temporary purple, or your version of it?

LOL - have you seen my kitchen in progress pics? The walls (what walls exist) are purple, the granite has lots of purple and we have purple flowers on the custom-painted backsplash (in addition to a few other colors).

Purple is one of my favorite colors. The other is pink.

My son and my mother are both cancer survivors and I know what kind of toll it takes on the patient and sometimes even more so on the family. But my Mom and my son are both miracles (Mom survived stage 4 ovarian cancer, son had Wilm's tumor that was 2 lbs on his kidney...he was just 4 months old). I hope your family is as fortunate as mine has been. Buckle down, it's a long tough road but we're all here for you! The kitchen will come along in due time.

Mom is home now.

We got more details today. It doesn't look good at all. The surgeon said his probe went in her neck bone over 12mm. They're still going to give radiation a shot because there is always that chance.

I talked to a former work associate today (I may be picking up some extra work with him - cross your fingers for that). He had a fight with cancer this past summer. It was in his bones (hip and femur) too and as of now he is clear. So I guess there is always hope.
