I don't know what climate you are in, but a hole in your roof is not a good place to make 'best price' your goal...look more for it's never going to leak not ever and will outlive me...

When we had an architect draw plans for adding on to our home a few years ago, the only product he would sign off on for my rainy coastal climate were the Velux and the flashing installations made by Velux. I haven't had others to compare them to but went with his advice and haven't been sorry.

I was thinking along the same lines... holes in the roof should not go out to the lowest bidder!

We used the Solatube brand in the bathroom of our previous ranch home with 8 ft ceilings and loved it. We had no issues with leaking or anything else in the 10+ years that we had it. When my daughter bought a house 3 years ago, her house warming present from us was a solar tube for her interior bathroom. We did look at some other brands at a home improvement show but still liked the Solatube brand the best. No problems with theirs either. Both homes are located in the mdiwest with plenty of snowy and rainy days. Even on a cloudy day, the tube still lets light into the room.
I am thinking of putting 2 in a long interior hallway in my current house.

We installed whatever store brand was carried at Home Depot several years ago, can't remember the name now, but it was half the price of the two national brands. Love it , no problems and think the price difference is due to the advertising budget. Every time I look in a home magazine there's an ad for Solartubes. Someone has to pay for all that.

Can one have too many of these things?

I was thinking of the Master Closet which has no windows. One in the master bath might be nice too; it does have a large window, but it faces the front of the house so it is usually closed. The hallway is dark, and we have an interior bathroom. What about the walk in pantry?

I have an interior bathroom, too, that I was thinking of using a light tube in. We have dear friends who installed one in the LR ceiling of their newly built home, so I have seen one in real life. I thought the light was a little cold. Nevertheless, I still want one.

I would steer away from putting one in the closet. I think it would promote fading of your clothes.

I had a series of private emails with a GW member who had used lots of light tubes in his/her home in various places. S/he absolutely loved them! One comment stuck with me. S/he said the carpenter who was installing them referred to the lens on the roof as "snot balls." Gross? Yes! Accurate? Probably.

You can't have too many ... it's wonderful to be able to walk into a bath or garage or pantry and not have to turn on a light.

They will not fade your clothes - it's reflected and diffused light, not direct sunlight.

I have a Solatube in a windowless bathroom. I know what you mean about the light being a little cold. I thought that, too, when I saw one in a neighbor's house. But in use it is no different than another of our bathrooms with a small round window that gets no direct sun.

At night, if the light in the tube is on, it looks like a little glowing spaceship on our roof. It makes me smile.

We're planning to put the same thing in another windowless bathroom. I was really happy with the installers from Solatube dealer.

We do installed a Solatube in the kitchen of our old house. We did not get optimal light because of the angle of the roof and surrounding tress, but when the sun it right, it provided an amazing amount of natural light. We probably had ours in the old house for about 10+ years and never had a problem with leaking.
