Stone Veneer Falling Off!!!
One of the things I liked about the foreclosure we bought was that that previous owner had done a stone veneer on the front of the house and on the foundation.
But, now some of them are falling off. Just on the edge of the front porch. Initially it was above the step, and I thought it was due to the weight bearing when people step there. But now more are falling off on the right.
Do you think it is because:
A. He used the wrong mortar/glue (what is correct to adhere these?).
B. Not enough surface on the edge of the porch to adhere them to?
C. Water getting behind them due to the run off on the porch. (When it rains and the wind is blowing sometimes their is water on the porch).
How should we fix this? We have plenty of stone left (he left about a 1/2 pallet under the porch). Would it be possible to ever get them to stay up against the porch edge?
I am planning on painting the porch floor. Am I better off taking the rest off the attaching a board across a paint it to match the floor?
Any help would be appreciated. This is new for me.

Comments (43)jhwu - that is fantastic, what a beautiful fireplace. That room has all my colours in it - walnut, light floors, green walls. I love it. sandnat - thanks for asking. I got sidetracked on another project for a couple of months this fall and this decision got postponed. But, I have decided not to go with stone, but rather tile as was suggested here. I've ordered samples of both the Heath Oval in new colours, and the Walker Zanger Studio Moderne tile. No one in my city carries these tiles, so it is a bit of an adventure getting samples. Although I still think I like the Heath tile just a tad more than the Studio Moderne, I also think the SM tile will better suit my space (although jhwu's photo is making me re-think that). I really like both tiles, so it will come downs to which works better with the look of my LR and DR. The WZ tile only stocks four colours: coconut, jute, ecru and clover. The others are special order. I'm not certain which colour I should go with - the clover may be too much. The other three that they stock are a bit plain. What do others think? My fav is probably the celadon matte. Comments (9)The required clearance to combustible materials for this gas fireplace/heater is 1/2" at the rear and sides and 0" at the floor. There is a noncombustible zone about a foot high above the metal frame of the glass and a few inches to the sides. The manufacturer's installation instructions say: "If installing Tiles or Faux Rock, first install a ýâ thick (minimum) Cement Board (Hardibacker or Durock Brand) over the face of the fireplace and framing members. Follow by applying Thinset mortar (no polymer additives) using üâ square notched trowel on the cement board surface. Finally, install tile to reach a finish material depth of 1 inch." "If installing Marble or Granite slabs as fascia materials, specify that the inner edges that will be adjacent to the Glass Door are polished ... Attach Marble or Granite slabs to face of unit and to drywall surface using adhesive that does not offgas when hot." I'm going to guess that the problem is some kind of plastic in the backing or setting materials behind the cladding that off-gases or softens from the heat of the fireplace. If this model has heating blowers in it, that might also contribute to the problem. Typical building codes requires that factory-build gas fireplaces be installed according to the manufacturer's instructions and so should your contract. New windows will take half your budget but could offer energy savings and sound proofing.The Craftsman trim could be fitted to the old windows or new ones. Landscaping would be the best upgrade. You need at least 4 evergreen shrubs to line the foundation and some flowers for colorsto repeat on the door....See More

13 years agoCame up to the house tonight and did some more investigating. Haven't found any brand name yet, but will look more in the tomorrow.
It appears that the mortar is adhered to the back of the stones but not the edge of the concrete. When I pulled this stone off (wasn't hard, just tapped it with my foot), the mortar all came away with the stone. Does this change anything?
The bottom of the edge of the porch is very rough. I can see some of the gravel that was used when they poured it.
Any suggestions on how I could get a finished edge if I don't use the cultured stones? Is it possible to trowel on concrete or parging to get a smooth edge? Getting the mortar off is no longer an issue.
I tried to take a pic with my camera phone. That is the back side of the stone I knocked off.
