Renovation of note in the 1960s

palimpsest

This house recently came on the market. It is on a "good street" and in the early 1960s was renovated by an architectural firm for a family of note in this area. (well known-socialite was used in the obituary).

The renovation was featured during 1964 in House and Garden.

I made the photos black and white because the current colors were probably not part of the initial intent and the furniture is kind of distracting.

Although the house has an elevator, what I notice is that the house is very simple and that the renovation preserved some historical features but really seemed to have no interest in looking historical. Parts of it seem almost cobbled. There is an early open-to-the-master-bedroom master bath.

It's not the sort of house that I think would be featured in a national publication today, nor the sort of house socialites would seem to live in. Everything now has to be so much more elaborate or high end. I'm not defending it as a particularly good renovation, but just noting these differences.

Pictures are from PruFoxRoach and the house is listed at around $750K
