Would these rugs work in my adjoining rooms? (lots of pics)

We will be replacing the carpet in our dining and family rooms with the same handscraped laminate floors I've laid in the kitchen. I have a small area rug in the family room now over the carpet, but IÂd like to replace it with a larger one, and I need one for the dining room. I made the drapery panels for both rooms out of fabric I love, but the bold pattern is giving me trouble in locating rugs that coordinate. The drapery background color is dark chocolate with a large vine and floral pattern in red, gold, and olive; the colors are fairly saturated. The dining room walls are SW Camelback, and I will probably repaint the green family room Camelback as well. I was planning on dyeing the leather sofa (a CL find) a dark brown color to hide some of the stains, but I really like distressed green shade so IÂm in no hurry, although it will probably happen eventually. The dining room chairs have yellow tone-on-tone damask seats, but IÂm going to reupholster those in a more muted golden butterscotch fabric thatÂs almost a solid, and also make a table runner.

So, given all of that, do you think the pictured green rug would work in the family room and either the Concord Red Panel or Concord Mocha Mahal rug in the dining room? (I couldn't get a picture of the two for the dining room, so you'll have to follow the link and click on the thumbnail images to see them, as it's not the default image that comes up.) IÂm limited in size in the dining room to under 11Â in length, and ideally under 10Â so IÂll have some of the floor showing at the ends. The Concord rugs are 7Â6" by 9Â6", which would be a perfect size, but IÂm just not sure about the patterns or styles. Are all these rugs too formal or traditional? My furniture is pretty traditional, but I don't want the rooms to be stuffy. I'm limited in budget and we have pets (and hopefully future children), so I don't want to spend too much right now. Just looking for something to soften and warm the floors.

Your question was a bit confusing, as I couldn't tell whether you plan on using the rug that's already shown in the family room or not. So I'll explain my choices and see if those make sense. I personally love that first rug shown underneath the heading "proposed rug for family room" the best, as it has all the colors that would complement your drapery colors, and would look great in the family room. For the dining room, my preference would be the Red Panel, with the Mocha Mahal coming in second. I don't think the rug you already have shown underneath your couch and coffee table works as well with your proposed colors as do the two new rugs.

Thanks for your feedback and opinion. I'm sorry my post was confusing; I think I mentioned in the second sentence that I want to replace the small area rug that's currently in the family room. So, that yellow rug under the coffee table will be going as soon as I get the new flooring laid. Basically, I would like input regarding rug patterns given my current drapes. I feel comfortable when choosing coordinating fabrics and paints, but selecting a rug introduces such strong color and design that I'm not very confident my choices will work in the rooms.

Continuity in a home's decor that is consistent with at least some of it's architectural style does help a home feel more pulled together and thought out as a whole. A quilt of related choices that produces harmony all together. However, your description of your home's existing decor says that continuity isn't as important to you as is choosing variation in your decor. A crazy quilt of many different colors and patterns, can work too, if there's enough color and pattern and variation when viewed from a distance. You need to decide on you home's overall direction before you can choose a direction for your kitchen. IF you want to treat each room as it's own entity, then you certainly can do fire engine red slab cabinet doors with stainless counters----as long as your kitchen isn't open to the rest of the home. However, if you take that road, be sure that you will be living in the home long enough (10+ years) that you will not be penalized on your choices at resale. Home shoppers are way conservative and lack the ability to imagine the home in any other decor other than your own. So, if resale any time is a concern, you might want to address the home's decor as a whole rather than individual parts. Individual parts do not always come together well in a quilt, and sometimes you have to step back and look at the whole picture when making choices for the entire home, not just the kitchen. Too many directions in a home's decor can look "ecclectic" if mixed well in every room in the house, or it can look schizophrenic if done hodge podge and poorly.

Virtuals are unmatched for letting you think through color patterns in the room, proportions and the things like this-- the final placement. My opinion is based on your comment that you don't need the chair-- I would move forward with the room with only a single chair for now. Since the dimensions of your bookcase won't change-- all you'd need to do to add a chair is to slide the bookcase and perhaps by an end table. (BTW I have seen the narrow profile end tables somewhere less expensive than EA-- plow and hearth, maybe?). If you find the *perfect* chair in the next few months, Squirrels virtuals show you that you can fit one in. My biggest fear for you is that both the kitchen and FR will look furniture heavy. Having the kitchen table/chairs right there is influencing my opinion-- and they aren't visible in the virtuals. Also, it makes for a mucky path to the bathroom if the whole family is watching tv together. I think your plan to check with the store that had the ET custom made for you is a great plan. Hopefully they will come in with a decent price. I'd still like to see it in a darker finish to give you some visual interest but matching would be lovely too. I too have seen the Macy's pieces and they were solid wood (though I don't know if it was veneer on wood) and seemed to be well made. I do not think it would be a bad option for you-- other than the fact that it may not work for your photo albums. Maybe you can throw one in a tote bag and try it out on the floor? Just more of my continued 2 cents. I guess I am up to a dime now ;)

Ok, so repainting the room is an option: that's your out! Or should I say "easy" solution? Repaint in a color more in keeping with the gorgeous rug (which is beautiful and valuable on many levels-honeymoon purchase being one of them!). Then your window treatments (panels-maybe) will be a much easier decision. I'm not loving the panel options mentioned above, which I think are nice, but a tad too informal for the direction you have taken with your room. Plus, they are very trendy, which again is not in keeping with your traditional style. You have heirloom quality pieces there! The rug and furniture should stay. Paint is cheap (compared to the investment in good quality furniture and the rug)! That's the way to make a significant impact without breaking the bank. Take a good look at the colors in the rug. On my monitor I see blue as the primary color, but monitors vary. Go to the paint store and bring some sample cards home, narrow it down and then go back and buy some paint samples and splotch away. In any case, have fun with this project!

Is there an eat in kitchen or would the dining space be the all-the-time eating space? I like Judy's layout if there is another more casual eating area (breakfast/lunch). traipsing across living space (from kitchen) for every meal doesn't seem functional. That said, walking into your fireplace area as a LR isn't ideal either. I think it could have 2 chairs and be cozy but the TV and living space would have to be across the way. It's a beautiful looking home.

Any other opinions? I can't decide what, if any, rug pattern will look good with the drapes.

I cannot think of whom had a rug that I believe would look good with your drapes. I remember that it was a large 2 story great room with a fireplace and many tall windows. There was a photo taken from above like standing at the top of the stairs. The rug had a black background with the red, gold and green pattern. I think there was a sofa and a chair or two in the room. Maybe a sofa table too, not sure. Does anyone here know whose house I am thinking of?

I think the rug you are showing might work? Can you order a very small size to try it out and then if it works order the big one and return the little one or use it as an entry rug.

Thanks threedgrad. I don't think I've seen the picture to which you are referring. Maybe someone else can remember or claim it? The green rug is a clearance item, so there aren't many left. I'm not sure if it would still be available if I wait, but ordered a small test size is a great idea if I find a different rug.

Why don't you just start with the family room rug for now?

It looks like it will be a fit with your other things in the room and the square pattern is a nice contrast with the floral drapes. It's also the one you are concerned about its availability, being on clearance.

Then, after it arrives, you'll be able to see what the colors are like IRL and proceed from there. If you are close to a Pennys, you can see those up close.

As one who has ordered many rugs online and has always been surprised with the colors, once they've been delivered, I'd advise to go one rug at a time.
