Exterior Color Suggestions for Two Story Craftsman in SF Bay Area

Hello,

Our San Francisco bay area two story craftsman home remodel construction is under way... we need to gain some confidence in potential color schemes as soon as possible to so we can finalize the colors for our window order (Kolbe Ultra Series wood interior/aluminum clad exterior).

I've pasted a couple external elevation sketches below to give a feel for the style and type of siding we expect to use.

Like many people, we are having a difficult time making color decisions before the house is constructed and without seeing any samples painted on the house. White would be a safe choice for the exterior window cladding, but both my wife & I tend to prefer darker windows and see the window sash color as a chance to potentially add a little bit more character to the home. But if we select a specific sash color, it obviously needs to fit into the larger color scheme of the home. We may end up going with a two body color scheme (e.g. wood stained shingles for the second story and a blue or green body color for the lap siding on the first story.)

We would love to hear suggestions from others regarding what color scheme they think would look good on this home?

White would be BORING and really water down an authentic craftsman vibe. Dark windows would reinforce your architecture and be more consistent with your desired look.

If you're chicken, a deep brown would be a safe dark choice that would go with anything and offend no one.

If you're a bit bolder, a dark rich red or deep green would be my top two choices - in that order.

It's reassuring to hear an opinion that mirrors our own. The window sash colors we have been considering are in fact: Hartford Green, Chutney (a rich deep red), and Dark Brown (Gingersnap?).

It would feel better, however, if we put this together with a reasonable overall color scheme that we feel good about. For example, if we really want to go with a blue color for the first story lap siding, then it might be challenging to make red or green sashes work.

Do you imagine a more complete (at least general) color scheme that you think would be attractive for this house?

Any opinions or insights are appreciated.

My first thought reading this thread was to suggest getting bids from other than Swan and Blue Haven. Blue Haven gets way more bad feedback than good, and Swan is usually high priced and mixed reviews. I'm in Stockton and went with Premier Pools over here. They built a good pool and I negotiated a fair price, but their customer service and communication was appalling. Wouldn't recommend them unless the price was really right. I'd look for a smaller PB if I had to do it again. Our pool was approx 29'x16' (400 ft freeform). Pebble Sheen finish, solar (8 panels), 2-speed 2hp Jandy pump, Polaris 360 cleaner, auto fill, Jandy PDA and Aqualink controller, sheer descent, about 40 ft of raised bond beam, 400 sq ft of stamped colored concrete for $40,800. We paid another $1800 to demolish existing patio and patio overhang and take out few shrubs and small trees. $225 for new fencing material (they built new fence as part of contract). $3,200 for additional 300 sq ft of stamped colored conrete. And $1200 to move 220v line for existing above ground hot tub. ($47,225 total) We bid out landscaping and irrigation separately. One other thing to consider if you go with a pebble finish. Try and get an idea of which colors you like and make sure that color level is specified in the bid. They usually don't tell you the pebble finish only includes a couple colors, and then when you pick your color further in the building process, you find out it's a "premium color" with a premium upgrade charge. Also, don't hesitate to let them know they're bidding against each other and you're on a tight budget. You'd be amazed how the price can come down. Good luck!

We lived in a 1956 ranch for 22 years and added a partial second story. The outcome looked a bit craftsman-ish......at least that's what people would to tell me. The first thing I would do is remove or cut back the bird box returns. They are way to big for the gable. Craftsman have wooden shakes usually, and you could replace the siding with shakes. Adding a pair of columns on either side of your garage door so that a trellis could go over the door will help soften that area. The post on the front porch would be replaced to match. Replace the front screen door with a wooden screen door or remove both doors and replace with a new wooden front door with windows at the top. Before - (small gable in the very center, top, is the playhouse in the backyard, not on the house lol) First Day: After - house was built using old brick, so we couldn't match. Addition is painted cedar shakes. Roof is four sections, meeting in the center at chimney that was extended up. Back looks just like the front with two bay windows. The upstairs addition was MBR/Bath and sitting room. You can't tell it in the pictures, but the front porch post was wrapped in lumber to make square and the bottom was boxed in and covered with cedar shakes too. I might have a photo somewhere if you'd like to see. We built new home and moved over 2 years ago.

boy i'll second that, jeffinmonterey. we waited over 6 months for our city to approve our plans and grant us the honor of a permit. they also put us into the design review fasttrack (which dinged us 1800 bucks) all because they couldn't visualize and, ostensibly, are biased against modern design. need to keep the mayberry aesthetic up you know. luckily our architect really pushed us into doing a model early on so when we plunked that down on the table during the design review meeting, the two bluehairs looked back and forth between their bi-focals and said "you know, this doesn't look anything like your drawings." they were wrong, though, it did. anyway, sorry for the rant. we interviewed 4 architects. three i found on the AIASF website and one was a friend of a friend who is a one woman operation in the city. we wound up going with her because we liked her vision and her personality. all four architects came to our house to scope things out and wound up staying between 1 to 2 hours. we did pay a retainer to get things going with the one we chose. she works on a percentage basis, 12% - 15% of the finished price tag. we never felt completely comfortable with that so we agreed to pass the baton after her initial drawings were complete. they were actually very detailed. my husband and i felt we didn't need so much hand holding through to the end and we have brought her in to tweak some things along the way. for that we pay her an hourly fee. we have had some stumbling points when things moved from her to the contractor's draftsman but our contractor is great at working these things out as we progress. it's been about 5 weeks since they kicked us out to start and the framers are really buzzing along. so far i'm quite happy. i'll happily pass on names and numbers if you'd like to contact me directly.

Thanks! I'm glad to see people think it looks good. I think we're going to end up removing the small windows at the second story stairs and in the master closet. Oaktown, we are probably going to make the guest room door a sliding door, just to save money. But I would agree if we go french door, to make it outswing. And I totally agree on the kitchen sink window! It's drawn only 4' 7" wide and we are thinking 7' wide now, which still leaves some uppers. I don't think I'm daring enough to have no uppers at all. :) My parents are leery about removing so many uppers and keep saying a growing family needs lots of storage but I think it'll be so worth it...hope I'm not making a big mistake. Luckily my hubby in this case is willing to go with whatever I decide. It helps that my uncle (who does a LOT of entertaining) told us uppers are just used for junk and he's going for an 8 foot wide window in front of his sink for his new house. Yes, I'm definitely thinking a different garage door; this one without handles: http://www.clopaydoor.com/coachman don't think it matters how it's drawn on this elevation though so I don't think I'll bother telling my architect to change it. Try going to the website Houzz and using 'Craftsman Exterior' as your search terms. You'll get thousands of pictures of craftsman styled homes. Something's bound to click.

How authentic of a look are you going for? If you google craftsman or bungalow paint color schemes, a link will come up from flickr where there are oodles of pictures of homes (mostly in the Northwest) with great exteriors. It's divided up into colors to make it easier. I ended up falling in love with green, so for our craftsman remodel, that's what we went with.

I would consider pastels in the SF bay area.

Thank you for the suggestions. We have reviewed many craftsman exterior images on both Houzz and Bugnalow color schemes on Ficker.

We have decided to go with the more bold window exterior sash option: Chutney.

We will likely paint the primary body color in either a blue or a green. We will either match the smaller second story body color to the first story or we might go with a stained cedar shingle look there.

The vertical sticking in the pedements will likely be painted the trim color (likely a creamy white.)

Any other thoughts would be appreciated.

Have you ever seen the Historic House Colors site? He's actually a consultant for people painting old houses, and he has researched various period color schemes in depth. There is a gallery of past projects on the site, and you may be able to glean some ideas there.

Hi, Take a drive in your neighborhood and take some pictures of buildings you like and if you find what you like, copy it. Hey but if the house is next door than all bets off.
