Could you remove the door, put in some shelves, and put baskets that appeal to you on the shelves that would hold what you need?

I could do the basket thing-- and that might be my only choice. My main hesitation is that is a potentially wet area (being alongside the dishwasher, which means the sink, wet dishes, etc. are there). My other thought was to turn it into a wine rack. But it's a deep cabinet--the whole side of the dishwasher, plus the part where you actually open it. So I'd lose all of that deeper part of the cabinet AND base cabinets are about twice as deep as I'd need for a wine rack. Plus, I have kind of a perfect spot for the wine rack anyway. Hm. I just figured if there was SOME sort of a door option, then I could use it for items that I don't need to get at while the diswasher is open.

Can you hinge the cabinet door on the other side?

Instead of baskets, which read more traditional, look at replacing the door and drawer with stainless steel or aluminum bins like these from Global.

Is that a blind corner cabinet in a peninsula? I can't really tell from the picture. If it is, then perhaps you could access it from the other side of the peninsula.

Whoever designed that needs to find a new career.

Haha-- I hear you on the design. We inherited it from the previous owners. The only thing I will say in their defense is, unless you move the sink off the window, it's really the only place for the dishwasher to go.

Yes-- the cabinet space goes all the way back alongside the dishwasher. We thought about opening up a cabinet on the other side. But, that opens into our dining room and we JUST put new picture frame molding on the wall, and it would look really strange to have a cabinet door there. I'd rather lose the storage space all together...

It just occurred to me that maybe the type of door that you find on an appliance garage might work (in the original cabinet opening). I wonder how hard those are to do. I don't think there is anything I could put there that would make it look "on purpose." My best bet is to not draw attention to it, I think.

There appears to be a wide gap on the left side of the DW--can the DW be moved that direction and inch or so? It won't help with the drawer vs. DW handle problem, but you should be able to open the cabinet door wider.

The dishwasher is already jiggled as far as it will go. Part of it is the angle of the picture--there is less of a gap where you see it, and more where you don't (but not enough to have a handle/knob on the cabinet). I can't tell from that photo, but this is the picture I saw that I thought might work-- but on a base cabinet:

As indicated in the name of the link, it's definitely more of a traditional look than I want, but I've been walking past the open hole (we took the door off for now) and I hate it more and more. UGH-- I so love the rest of my kitchen!!

What I would do is remove the drawer & door. Then cut the rail away from the stiles on both sides. On the left side, pocket screw & glue a vertical piece of wood to the left hand stile (scrape paint for the glue to bond) to increase the width of the stile, wide enough to allow a new (narrower & taller) replacement door to swing open. You will lose a drawer and the opening will be smaller but you'll still have better access to that blind corner cabinet.

You could opt to keep the drawer in which case you'd not cut away the rail and use two vertical attachments to the stile for a more narrow replacement door & drawer.

Finding an exact match for the door will be tough. If you know the cabinet brand, check to see if you can get a new door in the dimensions that you need for the altered cab. Or maybe you can have a cabinet shop build one. Otherwise, you could just go with a raised panel door for a close but not exact match. Paint all the new stuff to match.

Another option might be to use a shutter for the replacement door...perhaps one of those old style shutters that had fabric inserts. Or just a fabric skirt to cover the opening

I would remove the drawer, paint to match the cabs and it is a perfect place for cutting boards or a try or 2. Reverse the door to swing the other way. You would have to patch the holes and paint.

If hinging on the other side doesn't work you could consider having the door cut in the middle & hinged to fold out like a closet door.

I think a combination of the ideas above might actually work. I didn't think I could hinge the door on the other side, because then it REALLY wouldn't open (now it just can't open all the way, and I worry about it hitting the dishwasher). BUT, if we add the strip of wood to the left and trim down my current cabinet door a tiny bit-- I really only need an inch at most--AND reverse the hinge, then it might actually work. I mean, I still can't have a handle, but I lived with that problem for 4 years with just the occasional notice that it was annoying. And I love the idea taking the drawer front off and using it for cutting boards. That's perfect! Thanks for all of the ideas!!

Bakergirl, you have a lot of stile width on the right hand side. You could add to the stile on the left and leave the door the same size and just let it overlay more on the right side. It might look just a bit odd because the door won't line up with the drawer opening but it wouldn't anyway if you remove the drawer & use that space for a shelf.
