Well, after much debate and going back and forth numerous times, I believe that DH and I have come to a conclusion regarding our purchase. First of all, we were totally ignorant about open vs. sealed burners, but a quick trip to an appliance showroom (that carries Wolf and Viking) and a very informative salesperson helped us realize that we currently have sealed burners and that open burners are not for us. Then the debate came back to Viking vs. Wolf, which are the only two brands that we could find that a) had the double griddle in the center of a 48" rangetop and b) had repair service available in our area. We then visited another showroom where they hold cooking classes and had both Viking and Wolf on display. After seeing both griddles that had obviously been cooked on several times, we decided that maybe the built-in griddle was not for us because of the dirt, grime, and smell factor. Also, we'd have to purchase the stainless steel cover (not cheap) that we could tell would get scratched and annoy us to no end :) Price was also a consideration. So, as of yesterday afternoon, we have decided on a Kitchenaid 36" rangetop with all burners and purchasing a double griddle accessory. The price is much less than the Wolf (and Viking's reputation also seems to be doubtful). We are going with an Electrolux Icon double convection oven that seems to have good reviews in that price range. DH really wanted an oven that had knobs which seem to only be available on upper end ovens these days. Viking has one on it's D3 series, but these models are relatively new and have very little reviews as to quality. Again, Viking's past reputation played a factor in deterring us. Even the saleslady at the showroom said she would not pay the price of a Wolf or Thermador double oven when Electrolux's Icon ovens were just as good for half (or less) the price. CEFreeman: I know that is a common mistake- I'ld like to think that most folks are now aware that above the fridge is the last place you should put your wine. But then again, what about olive oil next to the stove? That's the most convenient place to keep it, and where most folks store it, but exposing it to the heat is also bad for the olive oil. I am keeping my design the way it is, although we tweaked the cabinet so the bottom doors line up with the glass doors above. I've decided that the "crate" wine storage is fine for us- and I like the way it breaks up the cabinetry. No wine drawers available through Medallion, but I'm fine with it.

Yes, I forgot to attach. Sorry about that. Have been busy getting the kitchen ready for removal this week. Just as an FYI, the long wall on the other side of the doorway will house the 27" SZ freezer, coffee bar and pantry cabinet. This doorway is the main entrance into the kitchen. We are trying to make the kitchen appear larger/wider, so I do not want any tall appliances or cabinetry on the window wall. The designer suggested putting the frig on the other side of the doorway, however, with the 36" door swing that would be problematic for people sitting at the island. I know that I want to keep the frig near the rangetop. Currently my cooktop is in the island and we are adding new windows, and getting rid of corner windows and corner sink. The freezer wall is 132", short wall is 67", rangetop wall is 172", and window wall is 176".

Rosie...what you say may be true for exercise bending, but we are talking about lifting hot, heavy items from an oven, not doing sit ups or other exercises. We need to keep this in context. Additionally, there are some people who will develop rheumatoid arthritis and other diseases/issues, despite exercising religiously all their lives, eating well, etc. Contrary to many people's beliefs (especially the exercise fanatics...and I mean "fanatics," not proponents), some of these things are diseases that, while they may be helped w/exercise and/or medicines, cannot be totally eliminated. And yes, many are age related--whether we like it or not. Some, BTW, can also strike when someone is still young. And, what about people who have strokes or other injuries, etc. that also have an impact and, unfortunately, are also age related? Please do not make broad statements like you did or imply that if you plan for aging in place that it means you must not be exercising enough. Perhaps this is one of the reasons you have to constantly bring it up...b/c it's simply not an all-encompassing (or even general) truth. Sorry, but it really bothers me when people think the solution to everything that ails you is more exercise when that is simply not true. I totally agree that it helps you to stay in the best shape you can be in, but it does not guarantee perfect/25-year old health & fitness all your life! OK, I'm stepping off my soap box now and will not respond again to this...I don't want to hijack this thread or have it become an exercise debate. But, I felt I had to respond to present the opposing view since decisions are being made by posters as to whether to install under counter ovens. The bottom line is that if you know your options and their pros & cons, you can make an informed decision and accept the disadvantages as well as advantages of any decision.
