Updating Powder Room.

This is our little powder room right off the family room.

I have been wanting to do a little 'refresh'. Added crown and beadboard to the back wall. New light fixture is coming as well. Now I need to decide on what to do with the vanity.

Vanity Now

Thinking about painting it black, maybe adding embellishments to make it more a piece of furniture. New doors are coming as well, we are changing this one to open out instead of in.

Any thoughts?

First thought is, you already have a lot going on in terms of texture, pattern and color so I'd stay simple with the vanity. The vanity doors already have interest with the recessed panels and I think if you add anything more it's only going to fight with the ceramic rope edging and the mosaic. Sometimes less is more and in this case I think the shadow line interest on the doors painted in a solid color will be enough.

So should I go with white or black? DH doesn't like the black idea, so maybe I will just paint it white!

Thanks, pjtexgirl! I have seen that website, and the retro renovation website, and we won't destroy anything intentionally, and we will recycle and make someone's day. I don't plan to replace things unnecessarily in this house, but we don't have the talent to update in a perfectly period fashion. Wish I did...it is a really pretty well preserved piece of history! We're going to try painting the frame around the medicine cabinet, the electrical fixture, and the "box" under the medicine cabinet. Try to find a medicine cabinet in chrome or brushed nickel for the actual cabinet part. I'll try painting the fixture parts on the ceiling light and save that. I don't think shutters are a possibility because, again, we have these metal casement windows. I don't want to drill into them or damage them. I'm going to try to get the detailing off of the existing vanity and repaint and replace hardware. I'm sure we'll have questions about that. For those of who you so generously offer help and advice, a question: Do you prefer questions to be grouped by a room in a post, or do you prefer individual posts with one specific question? I read ALL the time, for a long time now, but don't feel qualified to offer opinions, so I'm mostly a lurker.

Ours was similar with a wall-mounted fixture above a mirror. Because the electricity is in conduit the box couldn't be removed. So we had a mirror made tall enough to cover the box (it slides out should access ever be necessary), then installed pendants. I've seen mirrors similar to what you are considering at Restoration Hardware and Pottery Barn.

Kswl & sujafr, I am so glad you like the mirror! At the beginning I had no idea what kind of mirror to get, I even posted the question on this forum. When I stopped at an antique mall, I didn't know exactly what to look for and i didn't think i will find anything; I only saw this mirror hiding behind lots of other things after i went through almost every stall on two floors; even then, I wasn't sure whether it will work( I had more curvy kind in mind). But, I figured at $16, I had nothing to lose, it's not like I have another candidate that's even a remote possibility. And this is my first time ever to purchase anything from an "antique" shop or mall! To think we drove past the mall already and it was raining, And I told DH to forget it. Good thing DH stopped. I hope you two are not just saying that because you are the owners of that dusty looking stall, just kidding! ha-ha!!

on my monitor there's no gray in the floor..it's travertine..only very warm greige might fly and wouldn't attempt even very warm greige..I think minimum taupe or tan, if to go with lighter neutrals. This floor won't handle cooler shades next to it well enough. Yellow gold would be striking with that red, yes-having said that I really love that chocolate, but would borrow the idea of incorporating gold for ceiling treatment Agree about the bin btw, even though I'm sure it's very hygienic to use and all. ah, and agree about the towel. Doesn't have to be all red but can contain red in its pattern. It's also huge fun to choose towels..:)

I'm having a hard time picturing. Do you have a pic of the whole room? I think black could look nice if you added some black accessories. I'm usually on your end asking for advice instead of giving it though.... :)

For the vanity, are you just considering paint or could you consider resurfacing the top/splash or replacing it altogether?

If you want to stick with paint, I'd paint it the same white as the beadboard.

From a refresh perspective I wonder if you got a more contemporary mirror whether it would enable the more cottagey look? I think the mirror throws my eye off a little bit as it is very traditional with the rosettes. Maybe something oval or round would pull it together.

The room is very small so hard to get a 'whole room' pic. I will show you the pics I have.
This is over the sink.

I am replacing that with a fixture from lowes with crystals, of course I can't find it on their website.
From this pic you can see that there is a window to the left of the sink. The beadboard wall is directly opposite of this. That is the whole room!
This is looking in from the family room.

The door will be replaced and open out. Here is what it will look like.

We are going with orb hardware. Maybe I am just overanalyzing this and should just paint it white.

I really like your mosaic counter! I think that painting the vanity white would be a good choice. Would really make the whole room very crisp and fresh-looking, IMO.

Well finally got it all done, except for a few touchups! Painted the vanity white and added some trim. Installed light fixture and medallion, that was really a pain. Orignally there was a can light there, so had to figure how to deal with that opening! Then got my new door installed with the new orb hardware. Love the look.

Love the new door!

Finally a room that is 99% done! Now on to the rest!

I think you did a fabulous job. I love the light fixture and the door, especially. I'm impressed that you did it all yourself, too. :)
