How would you spend a $20k budget? A $15k budget?
Comments (12)I am NO expert - but we have started the process of spec'ing out potential options - I found AJMadison site valuable for a guy just trying to leave from a start of zero. Based on some config constraints - I ended up looking at things like a FiveStar Duel Fuel (we needed the 24in depth but wanted a 36 inch 6 burner, a Leibheer 36 inch fridge french door bottom freezer, Dacor MW drawer, Meile dishwasher (mid line in their line), a Futro hood and ended up pricing out some basic stuff for a snack station on the lower level for the kids off the rec room/ media room - and included there a basic beverage center by Frigidare, a GE Profile MW, and a Bosch dishwasher - this all approached a bit over $17K at the internet site prices - I then called them directly with the same choices and they offered a package price that was over $2000 less right out of the gate - and free shipping/no tx - they said they could have done more but apparently the fridge we inquired about is a tank and has high shipping costs. I know it is a hodgepodge and most likely now what we will end up with, but I was trying to get a rough order of magnitude and see what they would do with a single phone call to press on price....See MoreDo you mind the coldness of your granite?(esp. in a cold climate)
Comments (19)I don't find quartz to be as cold as granite, though it's not "warm" like Formica or Corian (plastic). Tile seems warmer to me than quartz, but I haven't done any kind of side by side test and they might be about the same. Granite is cold. Soapstone seems less cold. Don't know why, since both are solid rock. Maybe the crystals vs. um, flaky layers (I forget what soapstone is called)? Quartz is crystals in resin, so maybe that is it--crystals are colder? But less so if they're insulated with resin (plastic)?...See MorePlaced Granite Order Today, Now I've Changed my Mind-please help
Comments (20)I use American Express for all major purchases because they are so good at resolving disputes in favor of the consumer. If you really want to try to get out of the contract, then you should write a nice but firm letter to the company today. Do it today, because some states allow you to rescind a home improvement related contract within a certain time period (it could be 72 hours or less, if your state has such a law). Send it via both fax and certified mail so you have proof of how soon after you ordered the product you canceled it. (The fax guarantees they receive it today, but the formality of certified mail sometimes carries more weight.) I would use language like the following: "Dear _______: As you know from our conversation in your store this morning, I am very concerned that the Kashmir White granite I ordered from your company will be too susceptible to staining to use as kitchen counters. I appreciate that you gave me a sample of sealed Kashmir White to take home to test. I took the sample home and promptly tested it with food samples. Unfortunately, certain food products stained the sample easily; therefore, the product is not suitable for my stated intended use as kitchen counters. As I told you this morning, I would like to cancel the contract for Kashmir White counters and request that you reverse the charge for my $________ deposit. Because I am canceling within 48 hours [change time period if necessary] and before any templating or other work has been performed, I believe you should return my entire deposit." If you have to dispute the charge with Mastercard, the letter and proof of when it was mailed and faxed may help your case. The letter establishes that you promptly notified the merchant that the product would not be suitable for your intended use before the merchant did any work, and you had the slab on reserve for a very short period of time, so the merchant is not harmed by your cancellation. There is no guarantee this will work, but it is what I would do. Good luck....See MoreNeed Help! How to remodel on a moderate budget
Comments (21)Let me doublecheck my numbers but it's not fully double the costs. Also I'm looking to get as much online to save on price. I'm just trying to understand what's reasonable. Because 40K is not going to get my bathrooms done unless I pay for it all myself, which I can't right now. Plus I do think 40K is high. I'm trying to get down to 25K so that my husband will agree to this project so I can get the bathrooms done. I'm looking for help on approaches, websites, information to be able to hit the target. One bathroom is very small - about 50 sq feet. The other is larger; around 80 sq feet. But the main things changing are: cabinets, countertops, sinks, tile and fixtures. The small bath is getting a pony wall. We are keeping the tub in the larger bath and adding frames to the existing mirrors. We have decided to do some demo ourselves. I can't go too low end because that will affect resale down the road. I have to stay mid range as much as possible. I appreciate everyone's input. We've always done our own remodeling work in the past so why I have to truly understand these costs. Is my target unreasonable? Do I have to give up this project and put the funds I have towards a master redo down the road?...See Moregrannysmith18
