I'm depressed, I H A T E the new color of house.

plz tell me I'm crazy. I live in a small rental cottage, the owner is soooo nice to me. he does everything-fixes,replaces, even let me pick out the new paint color. (never had my own home.) and now... so bummed, it looks like dark green gray mud. weird color (not at all like the sample I had on the back for months) what would you do?? I feel I should have gone with my gut and picked blue
it's a rental, but I'm going to be here for years--or until he sells which most likely would not happen (I can take all the fancy stuff I've added anyway) but I'll be here for 10 yrs + and I know he won't screw me over.

but still......... I hate the color I want to cry!!!! any advice??????????????

Leave the vent green. It blends in so nicely. If it were me, I would not want to call attention to it. The corbels are great as is. I think if you painted the vent it would actually detract from the corbels.

Love the colors. My pick for the door would be the darker brownish red. But either will look good.

Definitely leave the vent green. As someone else said way back, it is not a decorative element that needs attention drawn to it!

Since monitor colors can be so off, I would choose whichever red mimics the roses the best. They aren't going to be right up against the door, so they will carry your eye to and from the door and I think that will work best if the shades are close to the same.

I do love the green and think you are so lucky to have that landlord! You should give him a big "thank you" smooch on the cheek from everyone here on GW who thinks he is a sweetie!

Shirley, I was out the other day doing the same thing. Putting back my flower tags took longer than I thought with the ground still a little frozen. So I put them under rocks for safe keeping. I planted a tiny, I mean teeny tiny, little yellow foxglove baby that I got from a friend of mine. I was so astonished to see that it has at least tripled in size. It is planted in the back of the house, by the foundation, where there is very little snow and no wind. Is it possible that it could have grown over the winter? I was just shocked to see it. Ruby, that sounds like a terrific HEART. Chocolate and Butterflies! What more could you ask for??? Corrine, your right! I love to laugh... and best of all IT'S FREE :D Ellie, I hope your feeling better. There hasn't been that much of a winter to do "sowing". I do jiffies under lights, but have been wondering with such a mild winter are the ws'ing jugs outside bursting with bloom or are they not growing at all because they don't have the snow for insulation? Um....well....wow. I did make it through the entire post...and quite a post it was! By the way....I'll take the pony. I already have a dirty kid. Lucky for me I have good paint on the walls...LOL! OK....let's get this out of the way... There's a good chance I may say something you don't agree with...and that's OK. I'm a 3rd generation painter and started learning the business when I was 12. Take that for what you will. Every painter...no matter how long they've been doing it...thinks they're the expert (just my opinion after knowing thousands). Now..your situation... This new concept of "full spectrum paints"....pure baloney. Absolutely nothing but marketing. Every paint is a full spectrum paint. Let's not forget that there are only 3 primary colors. Black is the presence of all color and white is the absence of all color. From this we derive all variations....and colorants (the term for what is added to paint) are manufactured to certain variations for simplicity. Without boring anyone to death about the progression...this page is a good start: http://www.artsparx.com/color_basicprinc.asp That said...what is most important is quality of the paint and the consistency of color. Quality of the paint is fairly simple. Every paint manufacturer has good paint and garbage paint. There is no such thing as 'which brand is better'. They all have top of the line...and they all have contractor (new construction) grades. What you want is 100% acrylic. Acrylic refers to the type of resin used to make the paint...and it's the best. Consistency of color is a tad more involved. Green (for example) can be made from blue and yellow...or it can be made from black and yellow...or from purple (blue and red) and yellow. All results are 'green' but they will have a different effect on the eye. You can take the same shade of green...made each way...and they will 'look' and 'feel' different. The best way to get an idea of this is to look at a paint 'fan deck' or color chip display. You see blues in one area...then blues in another different area. Most people look at this and wonder 'they're all blue...why aren't they just all together'? There's a reason...and you have to understand the reason. While they may look very similar...they are made from different color combinations. This is what gives color a 'feel'. An example is a home I recently painted. They do not like color. Huge fans of beige...in different forms. They chose shades from all over the sample choices. Beige is beige...right? Nope. I tried to explain...but they loved the little chips. Now that it's done...there's a different feel from one room with a beige based on black...to the adjoining room with a beige based on red. It's subconscious...but recognizable. Now I'm repainting 3 rooms. So here's the thing for you. Pick whatever color you like for each room. You can go for warmth, soft, vibrant, or any mood you wish the room to have. What creates flow is not color...but what the color is based on. Try to think of the basics of color and not get drawn into the hype. Now...this post of mine has gone on more than I planned....so if anyone makes it through...you can pass my pony on to them. I'll hang on to the dirty kid I have......for now. Best of luck to you.

After the bath, a couple shriveled, clearly not liking it. But it's definitely satisfying to see white dots floating in the water. I left them out to dry and started to pick more stubborn bugs from some of my plants. Most of them were motionless, so I assumed the soap bath did the trick. So I left the rest alone. Nuked all the soil of new pots with boiling water, followed by a 4 minute cook off in the microwave. I set them off to dry for a few days, and I tried to pot them up last night. And guess what? The mealies SURVIVE!! Except for those that I had picked on, the rest still had tiny bugs crawling in them. You can call them eggs, larvae whatever, I got fed up. Took out my tub of rubbing Alcohol dunk half a containerful with more dish soap, and yanked everything into the concoction. Rinsed them into another tub of water, and set them off to dry again. This time I inspected every single one. Miraculously, no white stuff or survivors. I'm guessing it worked. The poor remaining plantlets all don't look good. I guess only time will tell if these all can be saved. Will continue to update... Oh, and I also found infestations on my new jades too, thankfully I caught the spread and am now containing it, or at least am trying to..

Such beautiful lamps! I just remembered I have a 'shiny' brass ginger jar lamp out in the garage that's very heavy that I haven't used for 7 years. I purchased it in an antique shop back in SD, and was supposedly made in England, but have never checked for markings. I would love to give it away, but feel its 'too good' for goodwill if there is such a thing, so it's still hanging out in the garage. And I don't want to deal with CL and the crazies it may invite.

The roses -which will climb up the posts and across the front (landlord is building a wood beam) actually matches the more bright color on the left (my original color I picked)

Another vote to leave the vent green. It is not an architectural element nor does it add anything to the appearance of the house.

Of the two colors you have, I would go with the darker door on the right. You don't want to match the flowers exactly - various reds will give more depth and interest to the landscape and visual appeal.

I would also paint the ceiling of the porch white. It will make that area feel less shadowed, especially at night.

My initial response to the 2 reds was the on on the right deep and rich looking but after looking at it the red on the right is happy and vibrant. I like happy but either way both are beautiful. Those roses are going to look great with that background. As for the vent I still vote green it is of no decoration value if it was a fancy shape then maybe white but as it stands the green helps it disappear and let the corbels shine like they are supposed to. You are definitely an added value tenant good choices.

I agree with leaving the vent green.

I'm late to this party, but what about an eggplant for the door? The red on the left seems too bright and the one on the right goes into the orangey-brown reds that tend to be my least favorite -- so I was thinking about the burgundy suggestion. I would like that better, but that would be a deep blue red, so why not take it further -- or the lavender door idea and go deeper?

I love the red on the right. The tone just looks perfect to me with the green. I didn't think I would like red at all, but that one seems to work perfectly. The green was a perfect choice. I hope you are no longer fretting about that.

Green vent. Either red. The one on the left looks happy and unexpected to me; the browner one on the right more traditional. I'd opt for happy since that seems to be the direction you're taking your cute house. If you don't like whichever red you pick, it's the kind of thing you can change in just a couple of hours.

Have you grown to love the house color? I do.

ok.................. painting today............

vent is staying green.

door is getting brighter (on the the left) red - he doesn't like the brownish one.
his wife likes the door to "pop" cuz she knows I'm going with lots of colors for flowers. :)

the door itself is getting a major redo (LOL) since it's a slab going into an old house which has shorter doors and the screws into the wall for the hinges were a mile long due to termite damage over the years. plus other prep work. wow, is all I can think. (oh the paint that came off the old trim" inside" the house is everything from aqua, pink, green, and red. (house built in 1936)

can't wait to see the final work of art. I'll post for sure! (flowers not in tho till I get paid !!)

awm, just want to say I *love* the tone you chose. It works brilliantly for me -- of course it's not my house : ) but *that* is the red that makes the stoop look intentional, and brings the house color and door together for me. Red like clay, very earthy.

to cindy: I love the house color, too, and I hope it's growing on you. As I've been driving around the last few days I've seen houses your color and they always catch my eye in a good way.

OK here's the final pic--sorry soooooooo behind, just now finished the flowers etc.. I posted this pic on another thread I just started. oops but drum rollllll....

I added (landlord added) porch railing
the paver path was set in stone so to speak (tok forever with all the steps the I drove him nuts picking exactly which stone,color, etc to go next -my "own" pattern.wet saw on most of them to make a perfect curve (he's anal too!) yes, landlord and I worked on the path. (He did the porch AFTER I put the stones in right place. :)
new mailbox, new porch lamp, new house #s. I realize they aren't quite visible.I should take one of those. and YES I know I have too many flowers, but it is for show and they all won't survive--I'll see which ones I like. I have yet to train/wrap the red roses up the posts. (Don Juan climber) my lazy husband has yet to mow the grass, and the pittosporum bushes are slowly on their way to become a hedge..........

Here's the door up closer. (yes the doorbell is a bit crooked, I'm straightening it out lol!

and look the driveway even got fixed!!!

I want to put an arbor there maybe next year.

I really liked the new color right from the start, but now, with the new door color and your charming plantings, I absolutely love it! You and the landlord make a great team.

What an excellent redo! Really brings out character in the house. Looks like you and landlord make a great team....and how excellent for both of you as he gets a much more valuable house and you get a much more lovely place to live. The eave brackets and the curved sidewalk really make it.
