Outside Patio Table: Round or Rectangle?

I'm getting ready to replace my patio table and chairs and am planning to purchase the Herrington collection dining table and four chairs from Lowes. I have a small coffee table and chairs from this collection and have been happy with the quality for the price.

I'm trying to decide whether to get the 42" x 84" long rectangle table or the 54" round table. We are a family of four but do have guests over so it would be nice to seat at least 6. My current table is 36" x 66" so I'm concerned that the Lowes table will seem big. Any preference for those that have round or rectangular tables?

If you have the room, I'd go for the larger table. I have an 84" table and can fit 8 around it and it's nice to be able to spread out when there's only 4-6.

I like round tables too, but prefer the rectangle one since in my space I have more room length wise than width wise and a round table in a narrow space is not a good thing. :-)

I think too it depends on the lifestyle of your family. If you entertain a lot, have a big family or need the bigger table and have room, great. If not, why spend the money for it if you don't need to?

I would love to have a round d/r table. We've now entertained for 25 years on the rectangular table we purchased before we actually entertained! I usually do most of the holidays, and I curse it at each occasion:))). More so after I saw a beautiful round d/r table in an antique shop in New Orleans in the late 90's. I would have purchased it, but DH doesn't think our room could have supported the size of the table we saw. That particular table seated 12. No leaves. The round is just beautiful. Like the link posted, it is more functional all around. The seating at a round table makes for easier conversation, you aren't yelling down to the other end of the loonnnggg table. Also, IMO, round is much more interesting decoratively speaking. Post a pic if you do decide on the round, I'd love to see what you have chosen.

Thanks for the link Erikanh, I'll check out EA. Katieob- I've seen the Avalon. If I wanted black it would be great. I'm looking for an espresso color. Glad to hear you love it. IT did look cute in the store. Krissd= Thanks for the honesty about the seam. Maybe if I'm prepared for it, it won't be so bad. Dh works at night so most of the time it's me and the two kids at the island. Maybe that will cut down on the crumbs and grunge! Fori- that's too funny your parents left the leaves in all the time. Good advice to check out the weight of the leaf first. Here are the two I'm considering. Crate and Barrell Allegro 48 inches to 72...little sleeker looking OR Pottery Barn Harvest Table 48 to 68 slighly distressed so may be good with the kids. My local pottery barn has a floor model on sale. I'm going to check it out tomorrow.

I think creating a brick patio in the coluour of the brick of the back of the house is a brilliant idea It will give and old streets kind of effect. Would you suggest a design plan. I could leave a space on either side of the windows to have a trellis and climbing fragrant roses. I love roses it would give something to the wall so it is not just blank. Herring bone pattern? Or what? Still 26x16? Rectangular with herringbone on an angle ? Or what? You are really onto something for me here it will go with the grand terrace furniture too. I like it💜.

Somehow I was talked into buying this last night on Wayfair my daughter loved it thought it would look great in here I hope y’all agree. I’ll probably keep my Pottery Barn chairs for the time being since they are neutral and replace with some fun colored chairs once the rest of the living room is finished. Desperately need coffee table and accent chair ideas.

I have a rectangle table and like it much better than the 55" round table that we had previously.
The round table and chairs take up a lot of room. The space looks larger and more friendly with the rectangular table, and besides
you can probably fit 8-10 comfortably with the rectangle table,
and can squeeze in 12 as well (with smaller chairs)...

Thanks everyone....I was thinking that the 54" round would take up less room than the 84" long rectangle but you've made me rethink this. The rectangle one is $200 more but maybe it would be worth it.

Still interested in other opinions before I make my final decision. Thanks!

We have a 54" round table. It works well for us, we have 7 chairs easily around the table (bought 6, but one was slightly damaged in shipping so it was replaced). I like round tables as it's easy to see and converse with everyone when seated. Most times it's just the family outside dining in the summer evenings and this works best for us. When we have guests over we have an additional folding picnic table and the kids will often sit there.

I do agree, though, to chose what fits best in your space and lifestyle.

I have 54 or 56" round table. All my table are round, come to think of it..

Anyway, it's great for the 5 or 6 of us. But when we have others over, it's hard to fit more people around it. Although, my chairs are kind of big. (big comfy chairs, Martha Stewart) When we do have company I often think how nice it would be if it was rectangular because adding another table next to it would be easy.
