Pedicure Questions

I have never had a pedicure, but I thought that I might try one just before my son's wedding on June 20. (So excited). If the wedding is on Saturday, can I do this already on Wednesday (before we leave for Madison)?

What do I need to know? Watch out for? Where do I go to make an appointment?

My dress is a mocha color and I do not want anything splashy. So what color would you go with? I would be happy with clear - just something to shine a little.

I would appreciate any help/suggestions. Thank you so much!

You could get a plum toward mocha colored polish to match your dress, but I would definitely go with a color. Wear sandles for the next 24 hours while the polish sets. To be really safe, buy your own polish at a beauty supply store, bring it to use at the pedicure, and then pack it in case of a boo boo which you can touch up with the polish.

You need to find a manicure salon that does pedicures. Not all salons do, but these days more do pedicures than ever before.

To keep your feet looking nice for the wedding, use hand cream on them before bed and after your shower in the morning. You might want to use one of those emery buffers for the heels of your feet after your shower too. Be careful that the bottoms of your feet don't get all slippery inside your shoes though.

Great suggestions from sheilajoyce. Also, don't shave your legs the day of the pedicure in case you get a nick that could become infected.

Take flip flops to wear afterwards, and most of all, ENJOY!!!

Mine usually last about 6 weeks.

I will answer the qusestions asked but need to let you know I am a manicurist at an upscale salon. #1 No. I don't worry because I know how the manicurists I work with clean not only the spa but their instruments. That being said not everyone cleans according to Government standards. #2 A seal or other sign does not guarantee your salon is clean. I have had customers tell me they went to a "cheapo" salon (her words not mine) and watched the manicurist put a clean sign on a spa tub she had only wiped out with a towel. #3 Now about the web site. You can clean a spa before you have it tested but there is no guarantee it is being done after each client. Where I live I have been in the business for 15 years. I have only one time seen someone from State Board. Not sure there is a straight forward answer to this problem. When you visit the salon look around. What is the general cleanliness of the salon in general? I work on referrals. My clients know table is clean. They see me get clean towels for each client. They see me clean my implements and the spa. We do not take 1 client out of the spa and put another in before it is cleaned properly,which takes a little time. The requirements for cleaning the spa is posted in my salon and after each client we record that it was cleaned and how. This is available for all our clients if they want to see it. As far as contamination from polish if that was true State Board would require a separate bottle for each application. There is nothing in writing about this from State Board. I think we should all be concerned about this situation but I think we can make good choices if we investigate the salon we want to visit.

totally depends on the salon, but the basics are a foot bath, callous removal, massage, removal of old polish, buffing the ridges off your toenails, and either oiling and polishing painting of the nails. the salon I use (all of twice a year) has 'massaging' chairs with whirlpool foot baths and nice bubbles, and there are two ladies I can actually converse with (one is actively learning english, and LOVES talking to me, one is much older than me, and we don't so much talk as commune together) that's about the minumum I would think- ie it's enough to get the barefootin' hippy to waste 40 minutes and $30 for once in a great while. parrafin dips, how stones, aromatherapy, personal headphones...come at various prices. if you're feeling rushed- look around. are the other chairs occupied, did YOU have to wait for a space? is the shop busy enough to justify slacking in the interest of getting everyone serviced before they need to go back to work? if so- try a less busy time. if the place is dead... this may be why- but I get the feeling that half of the cut-rate salons are staffed by indentured servants, not trained (or at least willing) staff members.

I'm a retired hairdresser and was trained in all aspects of beauty :) (some are only trained in one area now) This is my regime: While in the shower I always use a pumice stone on my entire foot. All around the toes included. When I get out of the shower/bath and before the foot is entirely dry, I'll push back the cuticles and clean out the foot ush under and all around my toe nails with the "knife" part of the clippers. When I'm due for new polish I remove the old, lightly go over each nail with a medium texture professional file to get rid of any ridges. (Especially the baby toe) I don't press hard, just lightly and I might not do it each time, just depends if they need it. Then I'll buff the nail bed with one of those white sponge buffers (light textured). This smooths any scratches left from the file. I rinse my foot, dry and apply my polish. I prefer a french manicure as I think it has a clean appearance. My polished toes look glassy smooth. In order for my toes to look good, I'll make sure there is no dead skin around the nail EVERY single time I shower. I've always been proud of my feet and kind of have a fetish about them looking nice :) We used to tease my sister and mother about their "chicken" toe nail (the baby one)and in the years I've shown them how to do there own pedicure, those nails have become quite nice looking. Still small, but smooth and a bit wider. I hope this helps:)

Keep in mind that people can still lie about what they clean and what they don't... If you call and ask if they sterilize the equipment, I'm pretty sure they will tell you yes even if they don't. Also, it's probably hard for you to personally look for cleanliness. Most problems are invisible. I doubt swabbing a table or looking down a drain is going to be feasible. My best advice would be to use an established company and an established "technician" (or whatever they are called). Ask for recommendations from your friends. Even a chain place might be good because they may be 'more' required and trained to follow the rules. I'd be leary of a new, private place. I don't know how to get their health ratings, but if you can online, that would be a great idea. And, think of it this way... You're taking a chance any time you do anything... I would bet odds are greater that you would die in a car accident driving to the salon than you would die from the pedicure itself.

You could also get a French pedicure if you like the look ... very refined and all the rage around here. You get a teensy strip of white at the edge of your nails and then clear-coat over that. It looks (to me) especially nice with a matching French manicure on the hands.

Also, it goes with everything!

I just recommend putting on a couple of additional clear-coats when you get home. Makes it last longer. But then, I do that with color pedicures too.

My advice about pedicures is sit back, relax, enjoy. Wednesday will be fine. I agree you should bring your own polish. Get a good quality one from a beauty supply store. OPI is good. I love the Ulta brand. Do you have an Ulta store near you? You will be able to fix any boo boos and won't be rushed to decide on the color.

Last piece of advice: Pedicures are addictive. Plan to repeat the procedure often!!!

My nail salon uses OPI polish...I also recommend it.
Also wear sandals or crocs for a pedicure (think wide toe box or open toe shoes).

If you get a manicure at the same time, make sure they do the pedicure first. They should have disposable flip-flops for you to wear while toes dry, and the time to do a good manicure should be just enough to make sure toes are good and dry before you leave the salon.

Wednesday before should be fine. I get mine every 2 weeks, when I get my nails refilled.

I have no tips on pedicures, but wanted to congratulate you! DH and I will be celebrating our 22nd wedding aniversary on June 20!

I find they last a long time simply because they don't do the work hands do. Ask about how they clean their tubs. That was a fear I had. They told me that put bleach water in the tub and let it run for 10 minutes and wipe it all down. I have had two pedicures so far and have watched them clean the tubs. The key to disinfecting is to run the water through the jets when they clean them.

Ahhh, one of my favorite things in the world. Whoever said they were addicting is absolutely right! I would ask around to see who does a good pedicure in your area, all are NOT the same.

I would be careful about places that razor your callouses. In my state its illegal but some places are still doing it. The razoring makes your feet feel and look nice at first, but it does so much damage with cracking and spittling its not worth it. Also there is a high risk of infection. DONT LET THEM DO THE RAZORING, LET THEM BUFF YOUR FEET with a foot file!

I agree the french polish is the way to go for a wedding and a mocha dress. Its clean, classy and it goes with everything. Get yourself a manicure at the same time with matching french nails!

The wednesday before should be fine, of course the closer to the day of the wedding the better.

Do not go to a drop in salon where the employees share one person's license. I get mine at the beauty school where I know they follow the health rules. A reputable place would never use a razor to cut off callouses.
