Some excellent stuff on TV tonight

All started with an investigative report by KMSP "Fox9" called Kids, Cars & Country Roads. It talks about a fatal car crash near Pine City about a month ago. The one who survived and was able to call for help was the only one wearing a seat belt. It was an interesting report.

Even after the accident, the grieving groups, the "Will power" few are wearing a seat belt. Amazing? Unbelievable? Not sure what term to use. Like the principal said there's a fine line between memorializing and turning him into a martyr.

The other point brought up was he didn't know where he was at to ask for help. He wasn't from the area so he had no idea where he was at. There was a mailbox with a name on it and they were able to use that to determine the location. Good reminder for everyone to be aware of your location. Even in town if you need to call 911, not all cells have GPS capability.

This report caught my attention. Of course we're in sweeps but usually they have some stupid topic but this one was good IMO.

After watching that I looked at a link they had to Don't Text And Drive - Teen TV Commercial Challenge. In short, high school kids competed in doing a commercial aimed at, of course, teens texting while driving. All of the finalists were good, and a couple were extremely professional. Too late to vote on your favorite now but you can see the five finalists.

I hope they use them all. It's illegal to text while you drive in MN. I don't think that's publicized enough.

I was in an accident about 25 years ago, and was taken to the hospital with a bump on the head. The ER doctor ask whether I'd been wearing a seat belt, and I said yes. He said he'd been working in the ER for 20 years and seen lots of people die in accidents, but never one who'd been wearing a seat belt.

Certainly not an objective study, but it made an impression on me.

I never wore a seat belt until I moved to FL 8 years ago. People from all over the country and bring their bad driving habits with them.

Hey, Kevin, I was inclined to let my agapanthus go as have not had any bloom for the last two years. Since my sister took two tropical hibiscus to TX with her I had room to bring them in and try one more year. The hibiscus get too buggy for me. I have moved the agapanthus to more sun, watered more often, fertilized, etc. but no bloom. I read seveal threads for info but thought that you being a neighbor ( I live in Maple Grove.) your advice would be more related to my growing conditions. Decided not to dig up my glads this fall. May buy new ones next year or replace them with something else. Crocosmias look lovely but I don't want more bulbs to overwinter inside. I have three amarylis bulbs, one several years old. They are so easy to just stick in any open spot in the garden until I bring them in in the fall. One year I forgot about my older amarylis bulb and didn't find & pot it up until the next year. No bloom that year but it grew all summer and bloomed the next winter. I've had repotting the bulbs on my to do list for a couple of weeks...maybe tomorrow. I love my "tree" bouganvillia and also saved a varigated one but let the others go. Dahlias, cannas, calla lily bulbs, gardenia (got a blossom today, so fragrant), star jasmine, a soft pink fuschia (now full of buds), fig tree, huge jade plant, rosemary, red cyclamin (full bloom), purple dracenia, a clover from CA, and Santa Barbarba daisy (tiny flowes) from CA plus a few other plants winter in my basement or in my cool living room. A small yellow Japanese maple tree, (growing from seedling from my CA sister-in-law's tree), Cecil Brunner rose (a cutting from same sister-in-law), money plant, and a pink mini-rose are spending the winter in my unheated garage. Also have a huge pot with a dwarf arborvite and daffodil and tulip bulbs in the garage. Had success with bulbs surviving last winter in the garage and blooming this spring. All those plants and more, maybe I need to do some more culling next year though I will probably ADD more as today I received some "exotic Japanese Maple" seeds in the mail. Bobbie

After having been in clinical research for 25 years, I thought the movie was pretty well done and did a good job of educating what it's really like. Of course, as I sat on the couch (friend who monitors research studies was sitting across the room) I'd "erupt" with a "THEY'D NEVER DO THAT!!" every now and then....where' the technical advisor, etc! I cried over the chairs that gradually sat empty in the infusion room as some women succumbed to their cancers, I hooted and rooted for women to get treatment. I was shocked by the cold demeanor of some of the doctors (even though I know THEY are out there) and I clapped over the small victories. (This is how I really am too!). Being in research you can be a "people person" and you really care about all of the patients that you interact with, for without them, your work means nothing, or you can be cold and block it out (not me!). Then...there are the rare UBERJERKS (Karl Reinhardt was portrayed as one in the movie and I hope that he's fiction because he's going to get some nasty letters!!) that are cold, harsh, and uncaring. Maybe in cancer research it's a coping mechanism because it's really only been the last 10 years that we've made huge strides in treatmen, and women who show up with advanced cancer do have options that didn't exist prior to 1998. The drugs that were represented in the movie last night (monoclonal antibodies) really are A MIRACLE....I thought the movie was worth viewing. Count me among the unimpressed. I see a cancellation in this show's not too distant future. But speaking of gameshows - anyone watch the PBS Pioneers of Television installment last night - on Gameshows? It was a real trip down memory lane and worth the watch. Even though it wasn't a complete history, it was very interesting to hear the old hosts, etc. talk about the audience, both in studio and at home, as well as what made a great host, which in some cases they still don't have down pat. And while they did touch on the scandals, it wasn't the focus.

SD10 has come from a family in Ca. that stops everything for the children. They actually run wild. Not something that I am used to at. Although SD10 is not wild, she is very well behaved, she does retain that "I am the most important person in the room" attitude. She has made progress and as her daddy makes progress (LOL) I think she will do much better. She made a comment after arriving here that sums it up quite adequitly I think. She was dead serious when she remarked..."I'm just not right anymore!"....She had never been challenged before she moved in with us. So here is a 13 year old boy and a 17 year old girl and myself refusing to be told how life works by a 7 year old....pretty funny. Dad would just let her have her way, she ran the show. Having her home for the holiday break is giving me a chance to work on things. She is limited now to 2 hours of TV unless we do a movie or something extra. She and I have played on the Wii together and she spent time at a friend's house. She was drawing in the living room when I came in here to post. I had a long talk with DS16 last night and he is missing the "old" days before I remarried. It has been difficult for him to accept SD's age/behavior. But then of course he was the youngest before she came along. I was quite sad about it, did a lot of crying and then decided that he and I should have a date night every so often. SD and dad could do a date night on the same night and that would give her his undivided attention. As far as extra activities....she is in an extra math and science class twice a week, private violin lessons once a week and church youth group once a week. We do trips to the library.....she loves to read. We also do church every Sunday and she is in Sunday school there. She has a pretty well rounded life. I do want to make sure that I am not picking on her. I know that she is doing what she has been taught and what has worked for her before the remarriage. I have to teach DH how to be part of family and not an outstanding individual so to speak. I don't mean that disrespectfully. Family dynamics from childhood play a big part in it, both on his side and mine. I remember my first SD being the same way and she was an only child not to mention the grandparents favorite. I had never seen adults stop what they were doing to watch a child dance until I met her. She wasn't even taking lessons. I thought...ok...when are we just going to sit and watch her breath!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was raised in a household where kids were to be seen and not heard and most of the time nobody even wanted to see you.

I started wearing a seat belt consistently probably about 20+ years ago.

Another point that is misunderstood: A friend maintains he doesn't need to wear a seatbelt since he has airbags in his vehicles. Besides the obvious, that he has one *extra* "airbag" in there he doesn't understand that airbags work *with* seatbelts and are often very bad when the belt isn't used. Some won't listen.

I just hope people start paying more attention and set better examples for kids. Memorial Day weekend is approaching. How many will needlessly die over the weekend?

When my kids were young, and I was a minivan mom, I always told them that my car would not shift into reverse or drive if all seat belts were not on.
My youngest now 26, told me everyone really thought that was true. I don't know what started me saying that back then, but I am so glad I did. They all wear a seat belt religiously when in a car.

So far this year there have been 37 people killed in auto accidents in our county. None of them were wearing seat belts in the articles I have read. It's such a no-brainer! Put the damned seat belt on!!! And stop trying to type and drive.

One of the entries was from the HS where I work. Unfortunately we lost one senior and seriously injured another due to cell phone/texting this year. While their peers were making the commercial they were distracted and driving.

I've worn my seat belt all the time after they were widely available over forty years ago.

Back about 1970, my son-in-law was in an accident in which the drunk driver who ran into his car was killed. When the ambulance arrived, my SIL kept repeating, "I was wearing my seatbelt."

He was injured, but he lived, and recovered.

I never could understand why people don't wear seat belts. Heck, if crash helmets were widely available, I'd wear one.

But then, I really don't like automobiles, and am always uneasy in traffic. (I stopped driving about 1972..)

Years ago when California first made it law to wear a seat belt. I was pretty skeptical. But when I had kids I was like others have said. If the seat belts weren't on then the car didn't move.

For a while I rode around with a few tow truck drivers. I also stripped cars. Pretty sad finding a memento of a child on a keyring or in a car and knowing the parent could have lived if they'd been wearing a seat belt. Even worse when the victim was an unsecured child itself.

Every single time I read about a fatality I say to myself "probably wasn't wearing a seat belt". I'm always right. With the way cars are built today very few fatalities would occur if the person was wearing a seat belt properly.

And what amazes me is the number of people I know who don't wear seatbelts because "they wrinkle my clothes!"
