Remodeling for WC accessibilty or just move?

Has anyone remodeled &/or added onto

to their house make it wheelchair accessible?

We have a 2 story home with the bedrooms

upstairs incl master bed & bath.

We don't want to go the stairglide or elevator route because

my wife has trouble navigating halls w/her walker & also needs assistance in shower, etc.

I help her going up & down the stairs right now & she relys on a scooter on the 1st floor.

If we add onto our exsisting home we'd have to move out for a few months while master bedroom/

bath are added to 1st floor & possible kitchen remodel too.

Moving to a 1 level home would be ideal but we live in a great location now & other areas are not so desirable.

Finding a contractor that's familiar w/universal design accessibility could be a challenge too.

We are not 55yrs of age so we don't qualify for Active Adults Communities.

Your thoughts?

TIA
