Where to get large cove molding?

My cabinet maker could only provide 2 1/2" cove molding to match my cherry cabinets, so I'm searching for something bigger. What I'd prefer is 5" cove molding, but I've only been able to find it in that white, plastic stuff. I need cherry - unfinished.

Any suggestions?

If you have a local lumber yard, not Lowes, Home Depot, etc, but a real lumber yard, go in and talk to them - you may need to talk to one of their contractor support folks or someone who deals with special orders. They should have a millwork supplier or two that they deal with and IF such a thing exists, that where you'll probably find what you're looking for. For cherry - you may be pushing your luck... But good luck!

Any woodworker can make you some - I ditto the suggestion for real lumberyard, plus look up local woodworking shops. I've had a bunch of different odd-shaped molding made/matched to my old house; it's not super cheap, but certainly cheaper than the highway robbery the cab companies charge for theirs (!).

jiggreen- Coping is a superior method, even for corners that are a perfect 90 degrees because there is seasonal expansion and contraction or wood, and a coped joint will hide this, while a mitred joint may show a gap. To make a coped joint, you cut one piece at 90 degrees and butt it into the wall. Then you take the other piece that you're matching up in the corner and butt a piece of scrap up against it and trace the profile as best you can with a pencil. Then you get out your trusty $10 hand coping saw and cut carefully along the line. This is the hard part, and the only way to get it right is to practice. Once the profile is cut out it helps if you get out a utility knife and whittle a little bit away from the coped end (coming at it from the back and whittling against the cut end to almost the front edge). This helps the joint to be tight because there's no interference along the cut line from any of the wood behind the visible front edge. If you are real good, the pieces will marry perfectly. More likely, you may have to fiddle with the cut line a little using the utility knife. If it's really crappy, you may have to try again. That's why it's best to leave the other end a little long, so you can still use the piece if you have to recut it and make it a little shorter in the process.

Marisa - I almost hate to add to this. But, I am compelled, since I "restored" a 1900 Victorian home. "Restored" rather than "Remuddled"! haha! So, here's the deal. I hear you. You do not have to repair the wall behind the trim unless the cracking and crumbling extends past the 3" trim you want. Otherwise, the quick and dirty method is caulk around the window and fill any big openings with insulation if you can then place the new trim around window edge, nail in and hope you don't get more cracking or you could use contractors glue with minimal nailing, paint and final caulk. Simple, and I am not understanding your GCs not getting this easy process since you aren't restoring the original wood trim. Have you saved the trim, btw? It will bring some cash if you put it on Craig's list or other sales system, unless your GC has already "taken it of your hands"! Good luck. I wouldn't try to fix any cracking until you are done, because the installation will just cause more. Really depends on the condition of the original walls. Hope you get what you are looking for!

I consider that a severe mold problem. It can be DIY if you have the skills needed to demolish and replace the drywall - including the ceiling. If the studs are infected as well, that may require more specialized skill than the average DIY homeowner. You'll need to call in a professional to assess and resolve the ventilation issues - for sure. Health risks of living with mold include migraines, nausea, respiratory duress and rashes, to name a few. Those symptoms can be amplified to dangerous levels if one has or develops an allergy to mold. It's not acceptable to live this way. Do you have another bathroom you can use until this issue is fixed?

Any woodworker with molder... I was just coming back to suggest the same as circuspeanut - you might check with a custom woodworking shop - you might have to pay for a set of custom knives for the profile you want and you may cry great big tears about all that expensive cheery being turned into sawdust, but you should certainly be able to get someone to create what you need.

Don't need that...cove mould can be made on a table saw.

If you live in NY, NJ or eastern PA area, you could try Dyke's Lumber and Building Supply. I went to their Easton, PA store and they had the best selection/display of moldings I have seen.

Thanks ci lantro for that information. That looks very simple. I'm going to try to find a local carpenter to build some for me... probably cheaper than a lumberyard could special order it!
