Once again neighbor problem

A neighbor has transported a dozen + feral cats from a colony a few miles up the rd. to the empty lot next to my house. This is not known yet to the owner of the lot and I do not think she would like it at all. He has put plastic crates and boxes all over for the cats to live in but they are crawling under my hood, into my van, in my Florida room, in the grandkids playhouse and where ever else they want to go. They pee everywhere and it is starting to stink like a litter box. This neighborhood is a registered bird sanctuary and the dozen + well fed cats are tearing up the bird population. They are killing the birds just because that is their nature, not because they are hungry. I'm all for the cycle of life but these cats are being fed constantly. The neighbor is keeping bowls of food full all over the place, all the time. Which is attracting opossums, raccoons and other critters too. The feral cats are nasty deceased, mean and destroying property. I don't know weather to say something to neighbor or just call animal control and the owner of the property. The cat colonies were set up to keep the masses of the critters out of the populated areas. It seems to me if you want cats you should keep them in your house and property not in mine and the rest of the neighbors. I also believe when they tear up someone Else's property the cat lover should take responsibility and pay for it. I've been dealing with these cats for weeks now. As much as I dislike seeing animals die because they are unwanted, I'm willing to open a KILL THEM ALL Animal Control Office at this point.

A registered bird sanctuary?!? I would think the answer is obvious. I would call animal control and they will know how to handle it.

I would also call the owner of the property to let him know that someone is using it for their own purposes, and has set crates and junk and food around on it. If you do not let the owner know about this, the owner herself may face fines from the city for the eyesore, and nuisance it is causing. The owner probably cannot afford a ticket from the city and a day in court. A city will hold the owner responsible for the condition of the property even if they are an absentee owner. She needs to know.

Thanks for the suggestion Corrie. I have actually looked at that product at the store before. It might be a good idea to use it on my roses as well... thrip problems. My only fear is that it will kill the honey bees, though I can't recall ever seeing any on my roses.

Thanks for your help. I will check for the lock washer, it might be it never had it. This particular machine has leaked from the beginning. I always just lived with it because I was in the middle of processing. Should have addressed it ages ago. The gasket indeed did break, not dry rot with age, or breakdown. I am unsure as to when and how, but it did. I know I can replace it. Not argueing, but I do know how to assemble this machine, been doing it for years. Something is wrong though, because it does get hot from the friction, even processing slow and steady. The spiral never quite fit as well as I remember my old machine did. We do empty it out frequently and at the time I had problems it was newly cleaned - mesh had been scrubbed clean. I thought at first I missed a stem and that got jammed, but not the case. I will go over the parts again to make sure all are there. Anyway - still looking at a stainless option. Just wanted to see if anyone had any opinions or owned one that are offered on the web. ....We do have an old Foley - why didn't I think of that when we were stuck the other night?? too tired. Thanks again - I do appreciate it.

Adding emphasis to what friedajune said, consider these points. First, the large oven in a 36" range takes significantly longer to fully preheat than one in a 30" range. Second, it will dump more heat into your kitchen while operating, particularly in convection modes. Third, a 36" Thermador or Wolf range is much more expensive than 30" range. For example, scanning AJMadsion's listings, I see that 36" Thermador models cost from $1700 up to $2500 more than the 30" models. That does not count add-ins for the extra ventilation costs. Fourth, will you often need five or six burners going at once to make all that extra expense worth the inconvenient loss of counter and cabinet space? If the extra two burners would be only an occasional convenience, then it will be worthwhile to consider some much more flexible and much less expensive alternatives for those times when more burners might be used. For example, consider getting a 120v portable induction cooktop (PIC). Good 120v PICs can be had for less than $100, such as this one. Even a high-end PIC, such as the Vollrath Mirage Pro, costs only a fraction of the price difference between a 30" and a 36" range. Easily stored out of the way when you do not need it and can be placed for use elsewhere, too, which may be handy when the kitchen is crowded at holiday seasons. If your contractor is thinking you might want the 36" range with a griddle setup --- say, for pancakes and such -- consider instead a separate griddle. Separate ones will be significantly larger and easier to clean than the ones on 36" ranges, and can be stashed out of the way when not in use. For example, you could look at a non-stick electric griddle such as the Broil King (around $100 and highly recommended by Cooks Illustrated). The kitchen in my house is smaller than yours and I prefer a stove-top griddle that can sit on my gas stove under my range hood when I want to use a big griddle and stashes out of the way when I'm not using it. For that, I recommend looking at this stove top model by Demeyere (around $120). I've found it does an excellent job of straddling two gas burners without hotspots, It is very heat efficient (which mean less waste heat to deal with and maybe eases the burden on your OTR MW if your are keeping it. Plus, the polished steel of the Demeyere cleans up very easily even when doing messy things like burgers. So, lots of additional reasons to stick with the 30" range size. For venting over a pro-style range, I'm going to disagree a bit with friedajune on worrying about melting an OTR over a 30" pro-style range (unless your contractor hangs the OTR way, way too low.) Thank you all for your lovely praise! I love my kitchen! I bought the stove when we moved to LA - got it in 1982 -adore it! I think it cost about $275. The hardware finish is solid polished brass that was unlacquered. I should have taken them and had them lacquered before they were installed. But I loved the unlacquered, polished look - a bit more "mellow" than lacquered brass - and didn't. When one has a gas stove with 5 pilot lights, the fumes cause metal to tarnish. I finally had all my antique copper lacquered as polishing lasted about two weeks before it started tarnishing. The pulls on all my uppers have darkened considerably; the pulls on the bottom have hardly changed at all - fumes from the gas rise. The fox string holder was found on eBay. I had an unpainted rabbit one I had bought decades ago in San Francisco, and I wanted another and I originally thought I would stack them on the side of the refrigerator cabinet so I'd see them when I come down that hall to the kitchen. I couldn't bear putting nail holes in those lovely new cabinets, so I only used the fox on the wall under the brass ship's clock. It kind of picked up the color of the copper in my kitchen. And I adored his " spectacles". He's made by Babbacome in England. There are several for sale now on eBay. I just love him - he makes me smile. My house was built in 1948, and to me, anything built AFTER WWII, is a "new" house. Of course, that's ridiculous- I was born in 1943 and I'm not "new" in any way! So my kitchen had to work with the rest if the house, even though it's a separate room. My house is very traditional and very English - lots of antique wood furniture and chintz and linen print fabrics. I prefer painted cabinets as new ones just look "wrong" with all the antique English wood furniture in the rest of the house. My inspiration was the English kitchen cabinet company, Plain English". It works in traditional, very old and stately English homes, so I knew that would work for me. I did NOT paint my cabinets grey because it was trendy, but because a white kitchen would be too bright and stark, with that huge west-facing bay window. The grey is light, neutral, and very calm and serene - also crisp enough with the white woodwork to look smart. Moving the refrigerator to the back wall opened up the doorway to the back hall. Of course, building it in with cabinetry made a huge difference as well. But it opened up that doorway corner of the kitchen. It also gave me 5ft of counter space next to the stove, instead of 2 ft - huge difference. Yes, I gave up 3 ft on the back wall, but that was really unused space. What is left is a perfect place to tuck in a small microwave, the cookie jar and the KA mixer. Planning and lots if thought is what makes or breaks a kitchen. It's not just about a pretty CAD drawing of pretty cabinets, countertops and backsplash- it's about how YOU cook, how many people will be in your kitchen helping, having designated areas for different preps. Having a place for the ingredients and pans one needs near that area. Yes, having the dish cabinets near the dishwasher is nice, but I'd never trade my huge bay window for that. That window was put in 32 years ago and I've never regretted that decision. It makes a small, ordinary kitchen special, and it brings my garden into the house. Of course, today there is very little cooking going on in kitchens anymore - women too busy, too tired, just not domestic. For them, any old kitchen will be just fine, so long as it looks new and au courant.

I agree with dilly_dally. I love cats too but feral ones are another story. I sympathize with you on the pee problem let alone all the rest you are enduring.

I love all animals, including cats.

I also trap all strays/ferrals that come on my place and transport them to the humane society. (Two in the past two years, but if there were 20, that would be my number.) In our town, dogs and cats are subject to leash laws, your animals have to stay within the boundaries or your property. They have to be inside, or fenced, leashed, or caged. Cats included.

I always sk all neighbors if they know the owner. If it's not wearing a color, not microchipped, and loose, it goes downtown. I'd rather do that than have them starve or freeze to death.

Yes, it will be 30 below zero here and some people will "dump" a cat here. That's cruelty beyond words, IMO.

Get your self a bait trap. It does not hurt the cat. Start taking them to the pound. You don't deserve to be overrun with cats, their by-products, disease, and food issues.

Sorry to hear about your problem. People are just so ignorant sometimes!
I would certainly call the owner of the lot. I would think it would be their responsibility to deal with the problem. And the cats are just going to start multiplying if no action is taken.

I would also give a call to your town code enforcement officer. Im sure that setting up crates for feral cats is against zoning ordinances and they should be able to put a stop to it for good.

Call animal control immediately and keep calling until the problem is gone.

Also call the property owner. They need to know how their property is being used/abused.

You need to call the property owner. Now that these cats are on her property I would think she becomes liable for any issues caused by them, even though someone else put them there.

I wouldn't put up with that for a minute. I'd be calling everyone from the property owner to city officials. The neighbor has no right to turn your neighborhood into a cat dump. He is selfish and inconsiderate to put ferel cats before his neighbors.

I like cats, but a dozen plus cats anywhere are just too many!

I went through the owner first when I had my problem. If I had it to do over I would just go directly to animal control and in your case the owner of the property also. Also I can trap them in my city with a trap that won't hurt them and take them to the humane society. That is what I in ended up doing.

My cousin owns a house on a 50 acre "farm" property. She has an old barn on the property, which they use to store vehicles and tools. She has lived there 30 years and people are always dumping unwanted kittens near the barn, feeling they'll have a place to be safe and catch mice and be fine. NOT! My cousin gathers them up and takes them to the ASPCA to be destroyed. I once thought she was cruel, but now I know she's not running an animal sanctuary. See all the above replies. No one thinks you should have to put up with this nuisance.
