Please help me choose/find a new sofa-pix galore
Comments (6)I thought my budget was reasonable too, but most of the sofas I see in that price range just look really cheap and poorly made. I have seen some that are good quality, but are very modern looking with the square arms and block feet. Do you think I could do a more modern sofa with my chairs (which are being scratched to death by the cat even as we speak)? Thanks for the options dee and yayagal. Those are lovely, but I should have mentioned that I have a real aversion to leather - not sure why. I should also mention that I'm in a small city in Canada so furniture prices are (I seem to be finding out) quite a bit higher. Here are links to a mid-priced brand of sofa many retailers carry here. If anyone has an inclination, have a look and see if there is anything that would go with my chairs. Comments (15)Can you spray a slipcover with Scotchgard? Will that help repel dirt so it doesn't have to be removed and wash as often? I just received my new slipcovered sofa yesterday so this will be my first experience with slipcovers. I ordered it from Macys, already forgotten who makes it. Like you I ordered the fabric in a beige ticking so the upkeep wouldn't be as bad as pure white. But it's still light so anything that spills on it will show. Here's what I'm most afraid of after my bad experience with the last sofa which was leather. The dye on my denim jeans transfered to the leather. Will that happen with this cotton fabric too? Am I going to see a blueish tint to the seat cushions? I keep trying to find the *perfect* sofa, first it was the upholstered one but that got too dirty. Then I tried leather thinking that was the be all and end all...it lasted less than the upholstered sofa! So now I'm hoping slipcovers are the best solution. At least with that option I can sew new covers without having to scrap the entire frame just because the fabric gets old. I'm looking for longevity here and I don't know if that's even possible. The saleswoman at Macys told me to dry it 90% and then put it on the sofa slightly damp. What happens to the muslim underneath when a damp slipcover is placed over it...it won't get a little steamy under there in the dark? I've got a phobia about mildew, wet things in dark places scare me. But if that's what they advise I'll do it....See MoreWho makes beautiful english roll arm sofas?
Comments (16)We have an English roll arm sofa from Ethan Allen that is not too deep. It's the Paramount sofa, which can be configured in a number of different ways -- attached back, semi attached, or loose back pillows, english or a different style of arm, bun feet, straight feet or skirt, love seat, small sofa, long sofa, or sectional... and of course, there are any number of fabric possibilities. Ours is also a sleeper sofa that we had configured with their air mattress instead of the regular mattress. We've been very happy with the quality of this sofa. Sorry, I don't have any pictures of ours, but here's the link to the Ethan Allen website. They're showing the paramount with the other arm style, but it DOES come in an English roll arm style (that's what we have). You have to order through their stores -- they don't sell furniture online. Here is a link that might be useful: Ethan Allen Paramount sofa...See MoreShow me your mismatched, anti-RH vintage finds...
Comments (28)Most of my favorite pieces are family antiques ... and yes, I do know how lucky I am to have these. The bed I grew up in, and the step stool my grandfather made ... he was a well known Buffalo artist ... that was the dog my mother grew up with. (And 2 of my silly kids, Lily the dog and her buddy Bailey). Same room, love the little high chair, chest and mirror. I've been trying to find out something about that chair since I haven't seen another one like it. My tempermental grandmother's clock .. doesn't like the humidity in the summer so refuses to work, and game table. The pictures on the far wall, I have photos of these hanging in my great-grandmother's parlor ... the reflection on the one is bad. My sister told me to repaint the frames, I told her I wasn't touching antique frames! My Mom tells me this is my best piece ... this was also in my bedroom when I was growing up. The glass cabinet was a piece my Mom found at an estate sale shortly I moved into this house ... she said I needed it to display my family treasures ... she was right! the clock is another family piece, this one works all year round. This was in my grandmother's dining room, she had all her china/glassware in it. My sister, who is an interior designer, didn't want it because it was "too primitive" ... lucky me!! This is a jelly cupboard my Mom & I pulled out of my grandparents basement and refinished ... it had been painted to match the rest of the cupboards in the basement. Some of my favorite things ......See Moremitchdesj
