This so ticks me off!

26 year old WOMAN, unwed, left her 3 year old and 9 year old at home, 9 months preggie, to go to a party across town.

And they were sleeping!

Turned oven on, for heat, as heat unit was not working properly. Had said during trial, that she had done it before.

While gone, house caught on fire, 3 year old died, 9 year old survivied.

Her attorney said she did not leave home with intent to kill her baby, but to keep them warm.

Across town??? Home alone??? To go to a party?

Duh! Insane!

Never would I leave babies at home alone, for any reason.

Duh!

Sure hope jury has the sense to charge her with negligence and whatever.

Am I soooo wrong?

Of course you are not wrong! The woman thought of nothing but herself. Poor kids. Hope the 9-year old gets a real mother after this.

Oh gosh, that breaks my heart!!!
9 year old was in no way old enough to be there alone, let alone with a 3 year old.
I think she should be locked up and the key thrown away!!

I am referred to as "the tick magnet" in my household. It is not uncommon for me to walk across the lawn, spend 10 minutes in the veggie garden, and come in with a tick. I've gotten so I can spot a wood tick sitting on the top of a plant, waving its little legs and waiting to grab hold. I'm going to repeat what I said in the post from last fall that Claire linked. I live on an old farm with a mix of field, brushy growing-up field, and woods. I use bug dope with DEET, though I put it only on my clothing and I don't always use it. I own several pairs of the pyrethrin impregnated socks and I tuck my pant legs into them. (Along with my bug net during black fly season I usually look pretty dorky when I am out in the garden.) I don't really worry about ticks because during the height of the season I might find 6 or 8 on me over the course of a day, but I do take them seriously. Instead of worrying, I do a complete visual and touch check whenever I come into the house in the spring and fall. Clothes get stripped off and examined along with my body. I again do a complete visual and fingertip check at bedtime every night (until it gets too cold for the ticks to be active) standing nekkid in front of a mirror so that I can see places like under my arms and the middle of my back, etc. in case I missed any the first time around. I also comb my hair with a comb having close-set teeth and do a careful touch examination of my entire scalp. Clothing I take off doesn't go into the bedroom. I view that nightly 15 minutes as the dues I pay for being able to get out beyond the lawn areas at my house. When we first moved here I used to freak out about getting a tick, but there are so many (mostly wood ticks, though there are some deer ticks) that I just don't have the energy to get worked up about them. I'd rather put the energy in to doing careful checks afterwards since it takes a day or more for a tick to get seated and spread disease. I do this check religiously, every single night, even if I have not worked in the garden. It's part of my bedtime routine, like brushing my teeth. It is my understanding (and fits in with my observations here) that rodents are a large part of the cause of the "deer" (more accurately referred to as "black-legged") tick problem, so the tick tubes, which target the application of permethrin specifically to rodents, make good sense. I haven't used them, however, and studies vary in their evaluation of effectiveness. Last season was the first we had appreciable numbers of black-legged ticks, so we are just starting serious consideration of management for them. I haven't previously seen reference to nematodes as good for controlling ticks, so I did some reading. It seems like around here they aren't too effective since nematodes live in the soil, and when are ticks are in or on the ground, it's too cold for the nematodes to be effective. They are also more effective on adults that the nymphs that often spread disease. However, I did come across a fungus that it supposed to be better in this part of the country, Metarhizium anisopliae, that has met with EPA approval for tick control. Unfortunately, it appears to still be in the product development stages. As others have mentioned, keeping areas with brush or long grass mowed will help reduce shelter areas for ticks, and reducing areas like stone walls where rodents hide will help as well.

To quote the sage advice of the Springfield, MO band, "Big Smith": "If we didn't have those bugs attachin', we'd never know the joy of scratchin'" :) My job requires me to be miles in the wildnerness all day, nearly every day, all summer long. So, I just CAN'T use the poisons because I'd constantly be bathing in them. We just duct tape the bottom of our pant legs to our hiking boots, tuck in our shirts, and keep a roll of duct tape handy for seed ticks. Otherwise, we just enjoy the glorious feeling that comes from scratching those bites! Makes us know that it's truly summertime! Generally, we have between 1 and 1000 ticks on us by the time we get home, but we're happy and tired and know we're ALIVE! I know, I know, this isn't really helpful advice to most. But really, aside from the slim chance of a disease, there's really a lot of psychology involved in the desire to be rid of the "pests". Also, FWIW, I've heard that a tick must be attached 6-12 hours before a disease can be transmitted, presumably because the tick must be filled with some blood to have it sqeezed/regurgitated back into your body during removal. Lisa, No Bird Police ... if I could manage to catch the wren, it would be history. Two of my granddaughters first saw the destroyed eggs on the ground and came running inside all upset. The 10 yr. old said she would give me her air rifle to kill the wren. But I told her I'd end up shooting out the windows of my back door neighbors. I'd never be able to zero in on the bird. Then she said why don't you put a mouse trap in the bird house - and I told her that the blues would get trapped also,. She tried and tried to come up with a solution. Lady Jemima, Our subdivision is fairly new, and we've only been in this house a little over 4 years. We have a dozen or so varieties of birds that have found us, but only now has a wren showed up. I don't have a wren guard, but I went to the sialis site and have seen them. When I get over my heartache, I may get my husband to make one by the plans on the sialis site

Uh oh - you didnt really get out of bed to chase him down did you? Bad move. Nothing more fun to a bored cat than a game of Chase Me. Cats who live together play that game all the time - one pokes at the other to get him to chase. Now he's going to keep at it, and if you try to ignore him he'll try 10 times harder to get your attention because you gave in to him that one time. You've already said the squirt bottle doesn't affect him, so ditch that idea. Your cat reminds me of my cat Figgy - you just need to play him hard in the evening - and in the morning. Clear space in your house so he has room to run. Find out whether he's a cat who specializes in stalking/chasing things on the ground or likes to catch flying things in the air, or both. Ping pong balls, super balls, crumpled up tin foil, feather toys on a string, etc. - whatever it takes. 4 or 5 a.m. is an active hour for cats because in nature that's when they'd be hunting, sun up and sun down. The food thing may indeed be part of it - if he's hungry that would explain why he's working so hard at it. With Figgy, who tends to binge eat and get too overweight if I leave food out, I had to remove carbs esp. grains from his diet because that did make him noticeably more aggressive and obnoxious to me and to my other cat Orange. Corn and other carbs can be as addictive a food for cats as tortilla corn chips are to some of us humans (myself included). Is he losing weight? I think you can feed him a little bit more canned without worrying too much about weight gain, as long as it doesnt have carbs in it. Or, feed him strips of chicken you keep in the fridge. My cats get a combination of Into the Wild dry food (no grains) and canned and they are doing nicely. Figgy still loves his food and still a bit on the chunky side but not obese.

That doesn't surprise me b/c my own mother used to do that when I was that age and younger. I would wake up in the middle of the night (due to my little 1 year old sister waking me) to find my mom gone, usually to some bar/dance club. Sometimes a note would be left. Poor babies!!

You know I'd have a hard time leaving a 9 year old home alone, but it seems like a lot of people around here think 9 is a fine age to be left alone. There's even a "home alone" class for 9 years old up at our Rec Center. Of course the fact that she left the oven on and went to a party doesn't help. But, I'm not really sure which of her evils is the worse.. she leaves a 9 year old home with a 3 year old, she goes to a party, or she leaves the oven on (stupid).

I'm wondering what they are going to get her on. It's sort of a combination of the 3 that seems most bothersome to me. I'm not sure people would be so upset if she left them alone to go to work or to take a neighbor to the hospital - but I'm pretty sure the law can't pick and choose what she is allowed to leave them alone to do. I wish more states would have actual babysitting ages set. Without them, it can leave the door open to problems like this happening.

I am so sorry for the poor innocent children and babies who are basically left by themselves to make it in this old world. They need to get her for voluntary manslaughter, at the least.

Is this the same case where it was the 9year old's birthday and she told him she was going out to get a card or ice cream or something for his BD? While she was out she got drunk.

There is no punishment sufficient enough for that.

I agree with the others that this doesn't surprise me. After reading about that monster in Austria who had his daughter locked up for 24 years and was raping her all that time and she was having his children, that just tops it for me.

But it is sad Glenda. Extremely sad.

I also wish more things were made into laws so there wouldn't be a question. One of my neighbors told me the other day that a lady at her church got into trouble for leaving her kids in the car while she was inside QuikTrip. The excuse was that the lady could see the vehicle from the store and the vehicle was left running. My neighbor thought the police were too strict. I didn't. My three kids are close together in age. If I didn't get a receipt at the pump when I filled up with gas, I had a baby and two toddlers to get into the store. I have always taken them with me. It's inconvenient, but neccessary.

In our local news a few wks ago, they told about this couple whose youngest child died (few wks old). Man was charged with the babies death; she was charged with not getting medical attention until it was too late. This was her 8th child. Her first 7 had already all been taken from her over the years. She had had the same charges filed against her with another child in another state, but the child had lived. Now tell me why she was even allowed to have that 8th child in her care at all?
