Outdoor furnishings

So, when we bought our beachhouse we bought all of the furnishings. This included a lot of verandah furniture (it is a large "L", and just the part facing the water is 50'x12'.)

Upon closer inspection, we had to replace all of it. The environment is tough on such things, and some of it was broken, and it all needed new cushions (they were red and white stripes and red and grey floral).

Because our house is a very traditional grey cedar, we went with white wicker. Our choice was to take what we could find in stock, or wait for an 8 week delivery (meaning we would be without all summer). What they had in stock has green cushions ... a bright, spring pea of a green that veers toward lime. (see below).

The only colors on the exterior are the weathered cedar (light grey), the porch floor (dark grey) and trim (white). And trees, grass and the ocean.

I want to tone down the green by adding navy and/or grey throw pillows, maybe poofs, and a striped throws.

We have a round wicker table and armchairs, a sofa, an armchair with ottoman, a second armchair, a wicker rocker, and then four white wooden rockers. The rockers will be lined up on one side of the verandah.

A few questions:

What patterns or colors would you use with what we have (the white wicker, green below, greys, etc).

Do you have a favorite outdoor pillow source?

Do outdoor poufs hold up? Don't they get moldy underneath with no airflow? I purposely did not get a wicker coffee table because I perfer the look of garden stools or poufs.

I would like to put a throw or 2 over the rockers. You see that all the time now in ads; is there such a thing as an outdoor throw?

Mtn, I recently ordered new furniture for the screen porch at our beach house and the cushions for the two loveseats will be a screaming green very similar to yours (maybe mine is a bit more yellow). The coordinating chair will have cushions in a striped fabric that has the same green and a darker green, with both a taupey gray and a more charcoal gray. The faux wicker we are getting is sort of a taupey gray. Or maybe more charcoal. We ordered it 2+ months ago -- we were told it would take a month to deliver and we are still waiting! grr. Supposedly it's coming in next week. Anyway, my point is that I like the gray with the green.

I just got a bright green pouf from Home Decorators, I think it's 24" round? Seems to be good quality. I'll be using it as an ottoman with the chair. You can order fabric samples from them, which I did before ordering.

For throws on our screen porches, I just buy those cheap cotton quilted throws from Home Goods or TJ Maxx and toss them in the wash once in a while. They seem to hold up fine, but our porches are covered/screened.

I have also gotten outdoor pillows from Home Goods. West Elm had some great ones last year but I didn't care for their selection this year. I'm still trying to find a couple that will work with my green/gray cushions but haven't found anything yet...

Angel: I can't see the swing too well, but is mildew your problem? I wash my outdoor painted furnishings (take the cushions off) in a solution of 10% bleach to water. It won't kill the grass or plants or anything if you hose the area down after. If your furniture is coated with plastic, I was told to use an RV cleaner (I have to use this on my gutters). Works great on the black mold/mildew. GGG

I think the take-home messages might be these: that it's good you've noticed the relative tackiness of so many mass-produced/imported garden and home products that are readily available; that they are relatively inexpensive and don't require much labor by the homeowner--that's why they're so popular--and the alternative is either custom-build or higher-end "kit"; that such a product can still work well. That it might be a drawback in selling a home, but not necessarily for you while you are living there, so you can change that later if you need to. It might also help focus you on what you like and don't like. For example, it lets you see how you like the change in lighting and temperature created by this structure next to your house; did you only need the screen/shade function, or did you want a 4 season room; do you have trees growing that will eventually shade the area and you won't need the structure eventually--stuff like that. Meaning, if you WERE to build something, or even buy something "grander", how would you want it to be like, or different from, your Target thingy? Relative cost and delayed gratification is a common struggle for homeowners--in this case, the $200 does not appear to be holding you back were you to decide to upgrade to something else, and it's very functional for you right now; whereas, to me a common mistake is for someone to spend $500 one year for an improvement that's tacky, when $1000 would have resulted in a super look--for that, one might try to learn to save up and wait. It's also a marketing thing in which so many "things" are waved in our faces; we could afford to have one or 2 really good items or designed and built in a marvelous way, but if we want a dozen or more items--a water feature, a screen house, a patio, lots of outdoor furniture, multiple walkways, a fence, a hedge, etc, etc,--and want them all NOW, then each one will have to be the cheapest possible. And then there is the problem that so little $$ and effort is put into the outdoor features in the construction of most homes--all the things that you really need to enjoy your yard --and we buy as much "house" as we can and then only later try to think about the outside. Well, that last was a rant... You might also try to avoid continually buying the next best screen thingy--at some point, they may all share certain "temporary", or even tacky, features and a more costly one might not really be worth the extra $$, not to mention sending the first to the landfill (unless you can find a buyer). So just enjoy your current product, and give some thought to whether you might eventually want to have some much more permanent, classic structure built, or whether there's something else you need more.

Rolling Green is one of my very favorites! The grounds are lovely, the stock is well organized, the staff has been there for years and is pleasant. If I'm looking for something particular in a shrub/tree I go there or to O'Donal's in Gorham, Me.; I live roughly halfway between the two. I haven't been to Garden of Eve's in some years now. But perhaps I will stop in... they had pretty nearly everything I can buy for the helpmeet's employee discount at a closer place. I rarely go to Exeter unless I'm hunting for fabric... but Churchill's sounds like a good excuse to preview what's "hot" in fabrics for the fall season... (next time go to Wentworth's in Dover, NH; this place is really making a name for itself with water gardening! and stop at Salmon Falls Nursery in So. Berwick, ME.. I will be honest, though... SF isn't what it used to be. But the statuary is about the best in the area and the shrubs are always lovely... even if the selection has been reduced in the past few years.)

Thank you for the suggestions! I still have quite a bit of shopping to do for the project (and will probably go out tomorrow or on the weekend). I've been quite busy at the studio recently (spending about 10-12 hours a day working away), so some progress has been made since I've last updated. The most significant accomplishment is the kitchen. Pictures are better than words, so here is one: The kitchen is practically done, except for the stove top. The kitchen, living room, and bathroom have all been "tiled" (with peel-and-stick tiles cut into unimaginably small pieces, then peeled-then-stuck) and "grouted" (with some drywall compound). The dining room has been floored and stained, as has the small hallway which leads to the bathroom. All the interior walls have been painted and a few erected. The bathroom has a frosted-glass shower (vellum with aluminum duct tape "trim") and a vanity/sink (minus the sink). The toilet and sink, to be made out of oven-hardening modelling clay, will be made and baked by Saturday. I've run out of mini-tiles for the studio floor, so I have to go and buy some more from Dollarama and cut them. Some wooden furniture pieces only await painting/staining (to the same dark mahogany finish that you see the floors/cabintes in) while others still need to be constructed. I need to get rugs for the living/dining/bed room. The sofas/armchairs/bed/dining chairs all have feet or legs to be cut, stained, and then glued, not to mention the upholstering (which may not happen). Some exterior walls need to be cut and others painted, while the entire back "window-wall" needs to be constructed out of balsa pieces and then either stained the rich mahogany, or trimmed in metal. Finally, artwork/accessories need to be made to adorn the rather bare walls. And that is for the interior only. The exterior: Foamcore bases need to be constructed for the hot tub, steps, and raised stone deck. Peel-and-stick vinyl tile has to be cut to the right sizes (probably 3x3-foot squares, set into a running bond) and then applied to the surfaces. The bonsai garden's: pillars need to be made and then painted; base to be set in drywall compound (think dry raked garden); moss needs to be set and painted; potential bamboo screen to be constructed; bonsai need to be crafted. The Japanese garden's: tree's trunk/branches need to be made of wire, covered in glue gun for bark texture, painted, and then foliage (crumpled florist's foam) applied and then further painted/textured; moss/shrubs need to be made/set in place; gravel set on the base; tsukubai/rocks made (probably out of drywall compound); water applied (saran wrap?). The outdoor furnishing also have to be made. Phew. That's quite a to-do list. I better get cracking! But tonight is my night off to relax. I think lime green needs a stronger complementary color than grey--like navy. Navy and lime green go well together, and I think you'll find many options (floral, stripe, etc). Most stores have their outdoor collections on sale now, too.

Frontgate has outdoor throws made of Sunbrella, but they are pricey ($200). Instead, I would invest in good outdoor poufs made of Sunbrella. The cushioning in outdoor pillows, cushions and poufs warrants a more mildew-resistant fabric. But I think a throw could be a standard polyester microfiber that's quick-drying and doesn't withhold moisture.

I googled "Sunbrella poufs" and Home Decorators came up with a nice selection. On sale, too!

You all know that I am no expert, but I do think navy looks nice with lime green. I also think that should be an easy color combo to find right now.

I would look at sunbrella fabric and consider having someone recover your cushions. You'll have a much larger choice that way.

A couple of years ago I bought some new cushions and was also able to buy some of the fabric (a floral). Then bought a few other cushions in a geometric pattern. Bought those outdoor pillow inserts from RH and made some lumbar and large square cushions. We have dark green outdoor furniture (a vintage glider and chair and the rest is wrought iron pieces) and I use a floral print and a geometric print in shades of pinks and greens.
