You know they sell magnetic paint that you could just paint on the wall or a light piece of wood and frame.

Yes, I know about the paint. However, I have already chosen what I am going to use and only want to know what I might use to glue the magnetic sheet to as a stabilizer.

Is the board magnetic or made of a metal that magnets will stick to?

Luwan (I am sure I spelled it incorrect) is an inexpensive thin board. You can buy it at HD or Lowes in the construction area.

What about foam-core board? You can get it at Michael's, Joann, Walmart (maybe?) - anywhere that carries craft supplies. It's the size of a sheet of posterboard, but has a thin layer of styrofoam in it making it sturdy but lightweight. I'd use a spray adhesive to attach the magnetic layer (just check the label to make sure it's appropriate for paper and styrofoam).

Terriks: The board is magnetic and the magnets stick to it. It's like a magnetized dry erase board.

gr5040: I'll be at HD tomorrow. I will look for the product you suggest to see if that will work.

embees: Foam-core is the product recommended by my coworkers. I will look for this also. The spray adhesive idea is wonderful. I was thinking of using some type of glue.

I agree with embees suggestion. There's also a material called Gatorboard that has the same styrofoam filling, but it's stiff as...a board. : ) Like a very lightweight, sturdy, smooth piece of plywood. You might try calling some art supply stores, if you can't find it at HD. It's inexpensive and also comes with a black filling. I've never cut it by hand (foamcore can be cut with a straight edge and several swipes of an Xacto blade), not sure if Gatorboard requires a saw, or what.

Foamcore comes in sheets of 32" x 40", altho some stores cut it in half and sell it at 32" x 20".

I've mounted many posters on foamcore and I suggest that when you start using the spray mount, be sure to do so in an open area on some newspapers. The spray settles around and can make nearby things sticky.

Sounds like you have a neat collection and that's a cool idea for a display! I also have a magnet collection that I picked up on travels and right now they're all in a shoebox. Hmm.

oooh-Skywatcher. Thank you so much for all of the detailed information. I am in love with this board already. I am off to HD today to see what I can find. I will just copy all of the responses and take them with me. I am on vacation next week and if I can get this done--will try to post pictures.

A friend put a piece of metal in a picture frame (no glass) for her magnets.

I ended up purchasing a product called "hard board" at HD. It's very sturdy and not as thick as Luan (luwan) plywood board. The guy there cut it to fit my magnet piece. I have it ion the deck trying to flatten the magnet piece. Looking at it, looks like the easiest way to do it is just spray the hard board and place it on the back of the magnetized board which I will attempt in just a bit. It's hard to do by yourself because of the curl of the magnetized piece. The hardboardwas only about $4. Back later in the week for an update.

Thanks for the update--hardboard sounds like just the ticket.

When spray mounting, try coating the entire surface with a light layer of the glue and align the edge of the magnet piece at the top of the hardboard and smooth the magnet piece down the middle toward the bottom, pressing firmly and sort of sweeping down with the palm of your hand. Then smooth the piece the same way toward the outside edges. That will help eliminate bubbles. If it ends up crooked, you can peel off the magnet piece and re-affix it.

If you find that your clothes seem sticky, don't worry, it will wash out.

Why don't you just glue the magnets in place on the backing? Since you are hanging them as a wall collection, it doesn't matter if they are magnetic or have anything to which they can stick, does it?
