Granite reflection considerations

Yahoooo!! Now, we're getting someplace!

Our granite, Volga Blue, was installed today. I'm still walking around admiring it from various positions, under different lighting, potential backsplash samples, etc.

I am rather amazed at the degree of reflection in the granite. We have a back porch off the kitchen, so very little direct sunlight through the window, and still lots of reflection. Has this played into your backsplash decision?

The undercabinet lighting REALLY reflects. Makes me wonder if it really matters where you put the lights: front, back or center, as discussed in another thread.

So long as it's polished, the darker the stone, the more dramatic the reflection will be. You oughta get a gander of Absolute Black or Black Galaxy! With good quality AB, you could almost use it as a mirror.

Just as an example, take a look at the Viet Nam Memorial. So many see so much in the "Reflections" of the Wall. :-)

I am doing an off-white shaker style cabinet (KM Huntington in Bisque) with soapstone countertops (not sure yet, but probably Julia). I should have been more clear with my request - I should have said *mechanical* considerations. I'm pretty set with my choices for style, going for that sort-of farmhouse feel - ORB finish on cab hardware, faucet, accessories - probably on the lighting too. I'm going to have a black counter depth french door refrigerator (probably the GE Profile, but haven't ordered that yet). So, one of my questions, for example, is the faucet - some are 1 hole, 3 hole, etc. What is that about and should I care? With the sink - I think I am going with an acrylic undermount, but I could go overmount - I've read some of the threads, and I guess it's just a matter of preference and that undermount is the style right now. If I did go overmount, what about the holes? Does the number have to match my faucet? The pendant lights are going over a peninsula - 3 way angle, so not linear, but I'd say it's about 5'? I'll have a pendant over each section, I have standard 7.5' ceilings - do I need to consider anything special about how they will hang? What about bulbs? Do they usually need special bulbs, or will any regular icandescent or flourescent do as long as they are in the correct wattage. I just don't want to order all this stuff and then have GC say that there is some problem or issue with it that now I have to scramble to get something new that will work in order to get the job done, IYKWIM. Kitchen sink choices - any pipe location considerations?

if you web search the term "trap arm" you will see which pipe it is that you have to go look at. The height of the trap arm is one thing to take into consideration if you want to keep costs low while renovating. The garbage disposal outlet has to be higher than the trap arm. The garbage disposal outlet is a certain distance below the sink drain. In other words, you have a certain amount of space between the sink bottom and the trap arm. The deeper the sink the less the space left over. Go see the PDF's on the web sites of the manufacturers of garbage disposals. This is about all you need to know, for the height / space question.

Thank you so much for all your comments. They are incredibly helpful. Live wire oak, your thoughts on warm and cool tones and especially re-examining my mission statement were very thought-provoking. As some of you may remember, I set out to create a kitchen that was "vintage with a hint of industrialism." I really like the idea that two seemingly incongruous styles can co-exist peacefully in a single kitchen. Thus, I have the white painted inset cabs and the soapstone and marble tops for the vintage ,and the industrial lighting, stainless steel pro-type appliances and commercial style faucets for the industrial. So far, I think it works. I think the checkerboard floor would add to the vintage feel, as well as a warm tone that I think the room needs. But does it clash with the rest of the room, which clearly has cool tones with all the white , marble, and stainless steel (though I'm hoping the soapstone will read as warm), or does it provide an unexpected but welcome contrast? I thought about an ebony stained wood floor originally (even with issues about showing dirt!) but decided that wouldn't read warm enough, although maybe as LWO suggests, it would compliment the cabinets and counters better than the two toned brown stained floor. I should note, however, that we will have other wood-stained elements in the room: the table, which you see below: the chairs, and the free-standing hutch or hoosier (these will all be on the eating side of the peninsula which never shows up in my design pictures because there is no built in cabinetry going in this part of the room. It is , however, most definitely all one room, and completely separate from any other room in the house.) Positano, thank you for finding that Peacock picture. That is the one I was thinking of that made me wonder if I need the island stained wood. But then I worry that it gets me back into that reverse-matchy thing (dark on light, light on dark) that I wasn't crazy about. I hope I am making sense with all of this. Garages & storage, wide vs deep considerations

We built an 'oversized' one car garage, at 16' wide, and it's barely big enough. Cars today are wide. We're looking at a small SUV, and they're about 6' wide; the same as my wife's Olds 88. We're renting a minivan (long story), and I found it tricky to get the huge rolling garbage bin past it to take the trash out. All we have in the garage is the car, trash bin, BBQ grill, and a small tool chest. For a two car garage, 24' would be the absolute minimum for average-sized cars, parked in exactly the right spot. For any other storage, add another 4'.

As an aside, when undercabinet lights are as high above the counter as yours are the placement doesn't make much difference as far as reflections go. IMHO, your granite is beautiful - enjoy it! On the positive side, you can check your hair without having to go to the powder room :)

Elyse-- The top one, called "Reflections" (which was the reason for putting it in quotes above), I saw for the first time about 15 years ago. Since that time, I can't see that without welling up. Last Fathers Day, that was my present from my wife. I've now got a 24x30 print that hangs in my dining room. :-)

Ditto on the Black stones. I almost did a black - thought the choice was final and my family loved it. The next morning, I was really worried about the glare. I decided neither me, nor my kitchen were looked good enough to have that much glaring back at me. On some stones though the mirror image is breathtaking.

I love you stone - it is a beautiful contrast with your cabinets. Congratulations!!

RE the Viet-Nam Memorial - I live right here and have never been to see it. That's pretty shameful if you ask me, but I was really afraid to find names of some of my long lost friends there. I may grab the courage to go this summer. Let's face it, if they had the courage to go, then I should honor them by taking a visit.

gneegirl, you should go but going in the summer can be pretty bad due to the large number of people. I found that going at night was a good way for the first time particularly. Less crowded, differently intense. There are people there to help you find names at all times.

It IS a hard place to visit, especially if you had friends or relatives who died and are on the wall.

Bill those photos are amazing.

megaul- I have volga blue, too, and the funny thing is it seemed to reflect more to me before, and at this point, is really not an issue. The U/C lights are placed a few inches from the front of the cabinets, and with the backsplash tiles in, it is less glaring than when it was painted wall there.

Your photo made me do a double take, cuz I have almost exactly that set up! Small counter, then range, then small counter angled just like yours! And the same edging! (Nice granite!! :) )

Bill Amazing photos - we are off to DC tomorrow with our kids and now I need to remember to buy some flowers before we visit the wall. Those pics brought tears to my eyes.

Megaul, we have Maron Cohiba and it is very reflective as well. For the most part it doesn't bother me at all except in the late afternoon when the sun comes through the windows at just the right angle. If you stand in hte wrong place it can blind you.

OTOH it has the effect of also making the room look bigger as the reflections make the floating bar disappear:

I love the Volga Blue. We have 2 slabs on hold for our new kitchen. Did they seal your granite?

Thank you so much for posting those powerful photographs. And, what a moving gift from your wife that must touch you every day. The Memorial puts everything in perspective.

Beachcomber3, I'm really loving my Volga Blue. We got it from Innovative Stone (Stonemark) through Home Depot and it has the PermaShield finish which has a 15 year limited warranty. In fact, I have to call today and active my warranty. BTW, I couldn't have been happier with the install and the two fellows that did it. They were very professional, pleasant, and cleaned up meticulously after they were finished.
