Granite Experts

My granite was installed BUT they did not polish the area under the overhang for the breakfast bar. I've cleaned it, vacuumed, but still it gets my pants at the knees dusty/white if its touched. I can also foresee food or grime collecting there from kids. I have the negative (think thats what its called) cut at the sink, where the granite extends the sink rather than the sink edge showing. I it would get nasty or moldy, etc! There is some unpolished area that can be felt when touch along the edge at the sink.

Can I varnish or coat both areas with something? If so, what do you suggest.

get the granite guys back and discuss with them...make them fix it to your liking. That's what you paid for.

suz...good idea, but I have been told that this is the normal procedure. Is it not?

Those of you who have a overhang, is yours polished?

Hi, I am not a granite expert - but I am a Civil Engineer. Here is my response based on the little I know about granite: 1 The granite fabricator can likely do whatever you can draw - but that does not mean it will not crack. $1000 seems reasonable to me. 2. You likely may need to seam this perpendicular to the 98-7/8" dimension. Unless you have some incredible support system the 20" overhand is likely going to crack. I have seen many homes where the cracking is visible (albeit small) where there are strong supports and the overhang is 12". With seam as noted above and loosely anchored supporting plywood atop 5" pony wall - the granite slab will rotate at seam and not hopefully not crack. The seam may need silicone caulk as it will open/close somewhat. 3. Your proposed overhang atop a 5 inch pony wall seems very unrealistic and sure to crack (if single slab). I would recommend that you work with your granite fabricator to work out support/seam/overhang issues/geometry. Further, try to get some guarantee/warranty against cracking (maybe for 2 years), as this will give you some indication on the sturdiness of the fabricator support/installation design. A great forum site for technical granite issues is stoneadvice.com, as it is frequented by granite fabricators that specialize in such matters as you may be asking; however, your lifeline in this matter is likely going to still be your granite fabricator. I went to Lowes for fun and it "sort" of looks like imperial gold to me. That color at Lowes was not in my price range. We have 120 sq feet in this new house and a very limted budget. I know some granite yards have colors that are lower priced and I am hoping to find one that pulls this yellow tone and comes in budget. Does anyone think these cabinets look like SW Antique White or do they seen darker to you?

Chris- The granite that is installed is dramatic which is why weren't not so much of a fan. We picked Giallo Ornamental because we thought it was sorta boring, which would work well in our house as we already have a lot going on. Here is what I sent them that I think convinced them: Most people posted that they think it is Giallo. Regardless of what it is, they don't allow us to pick out slabs there. While it is new construction, we don't have a lot of options on things; Because of that, you kinda expect to get what you see sample wise. They showed us three different samples of Giallo, all which were grayish brown in color, little movement (although we'd be fine w/ some movement), and no blacks, golds, or reds. The main reason I didn't want Santa Cecilia or one like it was due to the red dots (which my granite has TONS of) and the black; They told my Giallo has NO red dots in it. I do not like either color as I'm more of a pastel girl myself. Thankfully its getting fixed. It will be a week or so though before it happens and when it does i'll post the pictures of my hopefully boring grayish brown granite :) :)

Travertine is a tough cookie and does not play well with others! You will be much happier with the results if you also get a new backsplash to go with the new cabinet paint color and new counters.

It's not often that the overhang is polished. As for the white marks on clothes, there might be something on the underside of the stone. There's no way that the stone should be leaving marks on clothes, even completely unfinished. You might think about hitting it with a scrub brush, water, and a sponge.

Bill, you are absolutely correct. I figured the problem out. It is dust from where the contractor cut the grout using a saw on the old back splash. He had my entire house filled in white dust. I had vacummed it thinking it was from the fabrication shop. Vacumming alone wasn't going to do it. I had to scrub it! It seems fine after it dried using a hairdryer on part of it. I know more later. I do NOT think I will ever be rid of the dust he caused. If I may say, the contractor was an idiot! He has been paid for the work he has already done, and sent on his merry way.

He created too many problems already (not just the dust issue).

bill..whats your opinion on the reveal at the sink? I have I believe what is negative reveal..sink cut out extends the sink edge. I can feel unpolished granite there. Won't that grab onto grud? I wasn't asked how I preferred it cut. I assume the frabricator just does it this way since he also furnished the sink, and would know the cut out size needed.

The sinks I've seen with negative reveals haven't had their undersides polished, but I have to agree with you-- it'd be alot more hygenic if it were, now that you mention it.

Thanks Bill. It only makes sense if you think about it. I may see if there is something I can apply to the underneath surface at the sink, and NOT cause the adhesive to weaken. That would be my one concern. I wish I had known about the reveal when I order, or they would have asked me.

If anyone has a suggestion of something that would be safe to use, I'd love to here it.
