Scottish Terrier Wall Hanging

While trying to decide on adding another dog to the family, I got into a (friendly) battle of wills with my grown son (who lives with me) over what breed to get. Though we have put off getting a puppy for now, I will probably opt for one of the toy breeds such as a Toy Fox Terrier or a Chihuahua when the time comes.

As for his choice, a Scottish Terrier, I found this...

He's not just getting one Scottish Terrier, but four!

I'm thinking a wall hanging of four blocks. They have a reverse pattern, so I'm thinking the two on the left facing the ones on the right and two of them with the red background and I have a blue print with dog bones on it... and have the colors opposite diagonally. I hope that makes sense!

I want to put sashing around the blocks, should I put red sashing around the red blocks or go wild and put the opposite color sashing on them?

Think I should add any borders?

I'd like to add buttons for eyes and perhaps some plaid bows. What other embellishments can you think of adding?

I'd like to make it not too childish, but whimsical would work!

He is very cute. Sounds like you have a good plan. I have the dog paw print in blue. I used it when making a quilt for a new grand nephew. The red with the black you have has a great look.
I think your idea of plaid bows sounds great.
No suggestions;just wanted to say he is cute.

Hey! Where did my post from last night go? I bet I forgot to hit "submit" after "preview". Combination of heat, tiredness, old age, and GW, I guess. All is well here. Hot,like everywhere else except Vancouver, it seems. Lots of watering needed, a great chore for a nine year old who needs to help to earn his allowance. Not so great for small short haired black doggies though. Yesterday we had the ductwork cleaned. I had to give the technician a towel because he was dripping all over my house. It appears that the contractor didn't clean up the ducts when construction was finished and the ducts were full of construction debris. I bet the heat and AC work a lot more efficiently now. And notso much dust to clean up either, hopefully. Maybe one less JulieJob!! All of the photos are gorgeous. Gardens thrive with heat and water, even if gardeners don't! With IU 8 looming large, I hope that the temps moderate. Over on FB there are a few commentson birds panting. Same here. The three bbaths in my gardens are getting lots of action now, a treat for me to see too. Lots of clematis that i thought I had lost are mysteriously reappearing, perhaps as a result of the weather? Once I lose a plant I toss the tag, so now I don't know what I have. I am looking for a Joe Zary and a Tie Dye to cover my back fence. Woody's swag and Bug's variety motivate and inspire me! Warm here already. Doctor appointment this morning and awning installation this afternoon. I think of Chelone every time I look at my front window! And Deanne and Lisa because I have a large banana out there... Just musin'. Cheers all! Julie

Brutuses, That was me, with the yellow bedroom. I understood what you meant, but my only problem is that I have sheers underneath my drapes, and with 9' ceilings, the sheers would look strange covering that much expanse of wall if they were hung much higher than they presently are. I can't lengthen the drapes any more to raise them up to hang at ceiling height, and do want to keep these drapes in the room. If I were to remove the sheers and put blinds underneath the drapes, it would present a problem with all the windows and door on the porch side wall, since I don't want blinds covering the windows and french door on that side on the right of the photo. My alternative idea was to raise the sheers up to the same height as the drapes, and make long cornices that come down to cover just the top sections of the window treatments, instead. I just don't think blinds would add to the ambiance of this room, but do like the effect they have on the room you've shown.

She *must* be careful to protect her face; eyesight can't be replaced. It sounds like something like post-traumatic stress from starvation: One of my cats was kept in a cage & underfed until he came home with me (from a "rescue" that has now been banned from keeping animals...) He's been here about 4 years, & he's a lot better than he used to be; he can look at dry food without going berserk, but canned food or a special treat like chicken drives him wild. He has to have his separately, or else he jumps into the dish, spreads his paws, claws extended, to cover the entire dish, & growls the whole time he's inhaling the biggest possible chunks of food. When I've gotten too close to him when he's in this mode, he's clawed me, not realizing that it's me, the person who gave him the food in the first place. If he gets into the other cats' dish & I have to remove him, I just get behind him (not between his mouth & the food!), scruff him & pick him up & put my other hand under his back feet to support him. & he doesn't claw or bite me. As long as he doesn't think I might get his food, he doesn't care what I do. The whole time I'm doing this, until I put him down again, he growls & chews & gulps whatever chunk he's managed to grab on his way out of the dish. He may be this way forever; he's been through a lot & he's just a cat, you can't reason with him, can't convince him that there's more where that came from. so he eats his food in the bathroom & doesn't get out until the other cats have walked away from theirs. Maybe something like this would work with the little dog.

Hi Cynic...Meet Caroline!! I had a 4 1/2lb. Fox Terrier/Chihuahua mix, Susie, with me for 12 years. One of the purest joys of her life was jumping up, digging on the TP roll to unroll it, and then grabbing a mouthful, so she could gleefully run down the hallway, into the living room, and then the kitchen. When the long streamer would snag and break, she'd start the whole process over again, I finally installed a higher shelf to hold the rolls. Once in a great while I would put a roll on the original holder since it brought her so much joy. She only unrolled the paper in the main bath. She never bothered the paper in the master bath. And now you "know someone who has seen it!"

On my monitor it looks like the dog is black on red background....since this is not for a child I would keep the dogs and background all the same and sash them with a black. With the blue print I would use as my border and perhaps have blue plaid bows....and butttons for eyes and perhaps add dog bones and paw prints appliqued to my border.

Same plaid sashing as you use for the bows! Blue/red/black plaid would be perfect.

Now isn't he just the cutest thing. If you put border on each block, I vote for a small black sashing and inner border followed by a plaid border that matches the bows and black binding.

So glad the black was mentioned for sashing! I had the strips of red and blue cut and laid them together and they just didn't look as nice as when I tried the black.

I took a look on-line for some plaid fabric, and think it isn't going to be easy to find what I'm looking for, so will see if I have something on hand that I can make do with. Heck, I do have to go out later anyway, perhaps going just a little out of the way to Hancock's or Joann's...

I vote for black sashing, too. And, I do like that red with paw print fabric!

A gal called me to make her a quilt and I thought she said with a Scottish Terrier theme. After playing around with various patterns and making 5 different blocks, I had a question and called the gal. OH NO...not Scottish, Boston Terrier! New plan in the works....sigh, it's tough gettin' old.

Doesn't the dog disappear if you use black sashing?

I too thought that would happen, but after giving it a try, I don't think it does. (Or is it just that I know what I'm looking at???)

I think at this point, I'm more concerned about that plaid border. It is flannel and it's the only thing close to what I wanted that I could find. Maybe I should rip it and I can see if I have enough of the red paw print fabric left to use for a border. I do not have enough of the blue print, that's for sure... Maybe a solid red border?
Oh, and can anyone tell me how to do the bows? I was playing around with a strip of fabric trying to make a pretty bow and failed miserably!

Sharon, stuff like that happens to me a lot! Like when I said I was thinking of a toy fox terrier, I meant BOSTON Terrier! lol

I was wrong. The black sashing is perfect! Seriously cute block.

For the bow: how about if you make a circle with the ribbon, about the size of the 'neck', then fasten it to the quilt just in the middle? The loops in the bow would be towards the top and towards the bottom across the neck, at a very slight angle so it looks more natural on the dog. In the center where you tack it down you could use a red or blue button or even yarn like you were tying the quilt off. (OMG, what a long and obscure description! Sorry! I can 'see' it but I can't describe it clearly.)

Very cute you could also sew ribbon across the neck and add a charm like a collar effect asssuming you haven't added the backing yet!
