Just taking a minute to say 'hi' to my KT friends!

It has been quite awhile since I have been on this forum, but wanted to let you know some "good news" in my life for a change.

I finally got our (well, now it is mine) house sold...closed, and check in the bank! The Amish builders, who my DH liked so well, has a spot they are going to work me in because their next build didn't have all of their financial arrangements made.....so I am now back in the building mode and he gave me good (or at least, I was happy) approximate materials + labor estimate. He said he thought that he could build it cheaper for me this way than a bid price because contractors always add in quite a bit should the "unknown" come up on the build.

I trust this contractor so much. They do extremely good work and I believe him to be very honest. DH was an architect/contractor before his death and he said that when/if we built this contractor would be the only one he would use. He has inspected his work and totally approved.

I had a complete melt-down last Sunday...I looked around this house that DH drew and built just for us about 12 years ago and it felt like I was leaving him here...but Monday I got ahold of myself and decided that although I am leaving his hand-print here, I am taking his spirit with me to the lot we have had for over 4 years on our little lake that we both loved.

I have to move Saturday....have no "home", but a dear former classmate, who is also widowed recently asked me to come live with her until I bought or built a house. I am extremely thankful for her generous offer.

Hi - guess I've been holding out - but inspite of 5 days of almost constant rain and flooding, the veggies are thriving in my back yard. We are still on the established every-other-day water rationing schedule, but guess that is one chore I won't have to worry about - maybe for at least a month or more. The ground is saturated, but cutting lots of lettuces, Chinese cabbage, bok choy, bibb and romaine types. Earlier - the end of summer - we had so much cold weather, that I thought the peppers would surely die before they turned red - but with patience - they survived and managed to get enough warmth in Oct/Nov to do so - and are still hanging on for daily picks. The mandarin orange tree is loaded - as usual, with many harvest for the freezer, and a Christmas dish of mandarin, pineapple, fruit cocktail and whipped cream is planned. The banana tree looks a bit forlorn, but holding up strong against the south facing concrete block wall, and maybe I will enjoy some fruit this year. It has sprouted 2 or 3 pups and maybe I can find room to start a plantation (perish the thought), although have very little gardening space left. According to the locals - the beach was only habitable for 2 days this summer - although our usual influx of "zonies" (Arizona summer birds) were only too happy to visit and find respite from their unbearable summers. They bought lots of warm weather jackets to withstand the beach chill tho. Some seedlings of cabbage and broccoli are still in their cups, being hardened off, waiting for the floods to recede, and hopefully some warmer weather. The fruit trees are sadly in need of dormant spraying, but just like last year, the rains kept coming and they didn't get it. Funny thing, we had a bumper crop of apricots, peach, almonds, plums, etc., last year. Stay dry and if you come to Ca., bring your water wings! Bejay

Hey Jackie! From one of the 'old vets' of the KT..welcome to the most cyber fun you'll ever encounter! Be forewarned tho...this place is VERY addicting. My day starts w/a cup of coffee, reading my home state PA online newspaper then it's straight to the KT for my morning 'fix of friends'! I have 2 brothers who live in Jax..(Orange Park) and I can see why you headed north to live..pretty chaotic area. Sounds as if you might be near Fernandina Beach area-which I love! Stayed there for a week a few years back. I'm a recipe nerd as well-will be looking forward to seeing your selections to share. The KT is our 2nd home-a place you can get support, ideas, suggestions and a place to fill many lonely hours with cyber-friends. WELCOME from one of FL's Gulf Coast KT'ers!!!!

During a recent discussion on the causes of a someone's enjoying good health, someone suggested that good genes help a lot. Someone else said that a positive attitude, feeling at home in this precious world that God has given us was very important. And someone else said that taking care of one's body, mind and spirit were very important components, as well. It appears that you've done well on most of those counts, so far. Your progress is a blessing and a reminder of how much better off we are when we push ourselves on to the next passage even if we stumble a bit. Your future sounds very lovely. Really it does.

enjoy your new home..i'm sure that you'll have lots of ideas from your dh that you'll use, so you'll never lose his spirit...glad you have a contractor you can trust, too...

Thanks for 'checking in'. Nice to focus on all this good news: House is sold; you have a temporary home with a good friend; your future home is moving forward.

Once you're established at your friend's home, might it be time to rest a little? It's been a hard road -- and it was so even before the shock of your DH's death. It's possible to 'gear down' without grinding to a halt!

You probably needed a little meltdown--so much change for you after losing your dh. I'm glad you have a great contractor and hope you'll also take advantage of the other Gardenweb sites that have to do with building, remodeling, etc. There are many of them and have been invaluable to me as we begin a kitchen remodel.

Thanks for letting us know how things are going, phoggie.

It is really great to have friends make a major offer to help, especially when we are in need, up in the sir, etc.

I hope that you have some breathing space and can get settled down better into your new lifestyle: it is such a huge adjustment, and I think often goes better if we have a housemate to help us relate to varied thoughts, offering intellectual stimulation along with companionship.

I was just thinking of you the other day. Both of us lost someone so special to us in Dec. I feel we have a lot in common. It is good to hear you have decided to build a home. Oh your wishes means so much to me...you are such great friends.
I am exhaused packing by myself. I don't know how I could have gotten so much in these cupboards and closets! And I thought I had gotten rid of so much stuff at my sale.
The 26th is moving day! and it is supposed to be 100 degrees!
