Fathers not addressing sons by name

I've always been bothered when I hear a father call his son, "son". As in, "You did a good job, son." I find that so impersonal toward his own child. Why is it that some fathers don't use their child's name when addressing him? If I was a boy and my father did this, I would have to speak up.

My Ex-BIL does this all the time to his grown son and I really find it demeaning. He has a name, you know. You never hear a mother saying "You did a good job, daughter."

I didn't grow up with brothers so I wasn't subjected to this in our household, but I hear it a lot on TV and in life. What sparked me to post is b/c I'm watching AI and just heard Scotty McCreary's father call his son "son". I can't see how it could be a term of endearment by a father.

What's your take? Am I missing something.
