Dotmom needs your thoughts....

This is dirt_yfinjgernails, Dotmom's DIL. Dottie just received the terribly sad news today that her youngest son, my DBIL passed away this morning. He was a wonderful son, brother to my DH, uncle to his nieces and nephews. He has a marvelous wife, Pam who is more concerned about Dotmom and Dad's well-being than her own. It is hard with the distance between us all, but so wonderful to have the loving family closeness. This is so terribly sad for Dotmom, dad, and my DH. Please send thoughts if you would.

The mid tone floor that you have now is best for your space. You could go a bit lighter but grey floors are not really transitional. They will greatly limit your use of colors in the future. Midtone wood floors like the color you have are the most neutral and timeless. You could go a bit lighter or darker, but be aware that the very light or dark floors require more upkeep. Also if you dislike the red tones, stay away from cherry or red oak. What exactly do you not like about your existing floors?

I guess I'm glad I don't live where you guys do. I just finished a total gut of a house with 2/3rds the square footage for $200k Cdn. I see a couple of you have assumed I would not engage an architect or designer. You also assume I am solely relying on opinions found here. I appreciate everyone's thoughts. The purpose of my post was for additional ideas to give myself a headstart on eliminating ideas that won't work before engaging n expert. Going to an architect without eliminating the thoughts in my head that won't make sense is just wasting their time and mine. It doesn't prohibit them from telling me what should be done, but it does save me the expense of them telling me something I could have already heard won't make sense from a design perspective. Floating stairs was just one thought on how to add site lines across the house. Another way is to cut back the walls. I made floating stairs in my last house by eliminating the risers, and custom welding a railing. 100 in steel, $35/hr labor and new maple stairs cost me maybe $2k all in. My apologies if that's not the purpose of the design dilemma section of the site.

Glad he is doing better. There is a reason medical expenses are the number one reason for personal bankruptcy filings. Tell him not to be afraid to ask for better rates, assistance and payment terms he can afford. No reason to be embarrassed. The uninsured rate can be 2-4 times the negotiated rates for an insured person -- which makes no sense when people can't afford the insurance in the first place. Also, you are not responsible for his bills unless you have guaranteed them or said you will pay, so I would not offer help (at least as far as you or him talking to the hospital, until after he has seen what he can work out with them. If they can look to family to pay in full, they have no reason to work with him.

Dottie, my heart goes out to you and your family. I lost my son--my only child--on May 5, 2006 (tomorrow will be the second anniversary of his death), so I know the pain you are feeling. It must be some comfort to know that Brian did not suffer, but the most comforting news is that he knew Jesus, and you will re-unite with him one day. If you need to "talk", I am here for you.
