My DH Had A Heart Attack

I am still stunned. He is 47 years old. He is having a quad bypass tomorrow morning. Please keep us in your prayers.

Hi GerberaDaisy, When I read your email, I almost had a heart attack myself! ;) My lot size is similar to yours and was just a lot of unplanted dirt, except for the deck abutting the house. I am a SAHM, so I have had the time to educate myself and do most of the work myself.....which is what I am highly recommending. It is not rocket science, it is great exercise, and the feeling of accomplishment is unbeatable. In contrast, my neighbor went the professional route and is still ripping out what her person planted because it turned out to be inappropriate for this area. Caveat emptor! If you are open to doing more yourself, here is what I'd recommend........ Spend time learning about your lot, where the sun shines, where the darker corners are....check lots and lots of books and magazines from the library and see what you like, don't like....drive around and look at other front landscapes to see what the common themes are (usually the plants that grow well in your area will become self-evident) take digitals of what what you like and put it all in a binder and become familar with the plants.....and attend as many gardening tours as you can, asking a lot of questions if you see what you like....for example, who helped them design it, where did they buy the plants, etc. etc......there will be many soon.....google for your area.....here are 2 EXCELLENT tours in my area (which isn't too far of a drive for you) http://www.bringingbackthenatives.net/ http://www.stopwaste.org/home/index.asp?page=8 After deciding on more or less what we wanted, I hired a local landscape contractor to put in french drains and a simple side yard concrete pad. Then I hired a different (more sophisticated and more expensive) contractor to install a large flagstone patio (over rebarred concrete) with connecting paths to several areas of the yard....garden rooms....which seems to be what people are doing these days. Now I am in the process of filling my several garden "rooms" with plants. The only thing I would change, is to have hired Alison Fleck for her consulting services BEFORE I put the permanent structures in....not that I am regretting what I did, but there may have been another scheme I would have liked. Hi, Ilene. You have certainly been a glutton for punishment. You are also good at owning other peoples' problems. If you have decided to become more self protective now and enjoy your pool and give more necessary attention to your husband, good for you. You are the one that will suffer if you don't slow down a bit and take better care of yourself and DH. There are social workers that can come to the assistance of your Mom if you are unable. You can make a referral to the Office of Aging in the county your mother lives in if you are no longer able to meet her needs. Definitely, you have the right to be the the one to decide how much and what you are able and willing to do for anyone. If your Dad is nicer to you, it is understandable that you would more easily be able to help him out--and your DH is the person you will need to lean on when you need help, so you certainly want to care for him! If you are still willing to have your Mom visit for the holidays, of course you have the right to set the terms-overnight or whatever. She's probably not going to have the good grace to appreciate anything you do in any case. You could be in for a surprise, though. As you begin to set firm limits and boundaries with her, she may beghin to show you more respect. Justy don't hold your breath on that. By the way, imo you express yourself very well. Some of us have just been so mangled by misguided English teachers that we can't see the forest for the trees when it comes to composition. If you still have problems with any of the above, give a copy of what you have written to a counselor and he or she will see very clearly how to support your move toward greater assertiveness. With the new health insurance we all now have, there will be more access to counseling for this sort of thing. It's easy to let one's family pull one down, especially in stressful times and by invoking undesired guilt.

Our friend had a heart attack at 48. It was so unreal. He has a teenage son and daughter living with him. Lucky they were both home at the time and drove him to the ER. I am very glad you had someone there with you at the time Jamie. Time is SO very important. Follow your doctors orders dear gal! Sending gentle healing hugs for you.

Phoggie, I know it will be hard but do try to rest a bit tonight and this weekend. I remember feeling physically awful, too, after the first day or two of emergency/adrenaline-fuled intensity. At one point my normally low BP was nearly 200 (that scared me enough to go back to the ER, for myself - but it was only stress fortunately). One thing to ask your DH's docs: Does he also have some fluid build-up in his lungs due to the diminished blood-flow from the blocked arteries resulting in pulmonary edema? That combined with a pneumonia infection will make your DH very uncomfortable. But fortunately they can treat that by giving him diuretics (Lasix) to flush the fluid out which will make it easier for him to breathe, despite the pneumonia. It's good he's in the hospital because they can monitor him and give him meds to support his heart despite the blockages as they resolve the other issues. I assume that since you're so far away that he's at a regional cardiac intensice care unit where they have a lot of experience treating this sort of thing? That's good! At a certain point you have to force yourself to understand that there's nothing more you can do at the moment. All that can be done, is being done. So eat (anything), sleep if you can, or at least do something to divert your mind. I stayed away from alcohol or sedatives since I knew I might have to drive at any point. Keep your cell fully charged, make sure you have gas in the car. Do some laundry if you're out of clothes. I hope you have much better news in the near future. I will keep on praying for you both. L.

Saying prayers. My cousin Judy had the same thing several years ago, heart attack and quadruple bypass. She's doing fine today. I swear KT prayers are what pulled her through. God bless your hubby and you.

How is it going today, Trish? They really know how to do that surgery these days. My dad had it when he was 86, and he came through just fine.

They warned us beforehand that it would seem as though he suffered memory loss after the surgery, but it would clear up in a couple of days. That's exactly what happened. I don't know if it had anything to do with my dad's age, but I thought I'd mention it in case it's true of all bypass surgeries.

Hope the surgery goes well and he's back better than ever soon! In addition to Susan's caution about the temporary memory loss, I'll add that many people suffer depression after such a profound event. (If so, get therapy!)

He was lucky to have a warning and getting the necessary medical attention. Someone said 46 is young, but my husband was 46 and my brother 47, and they weren't lucky. I think that is a dangerous age.

Oh, your poor hubby--and poor you. It must have been a terrible shock to you both. It is unbelieveable what all they can do these days and they get them out of bed pretty quickly after the surgery. Total recovery takes a while so do as Linda said and take care of yourself. You are probably exhausted but I hope you have a moment to come to the KT.

Happened to my DH at age 45 and know how truly overwhelming it can be. No internet back then so it was off to the library for nutrition researching. I became a champion at label reading at grocery store in order to prepare heart healthy meals.
