Colour scheme questions - help me people!

Hubby and I are custom building a house. Had no clue what I was getting into! The overall aesthetic is quite modern (though not crazy modern, since we are building in a mature central neighbourhood of a large city, which has many old homes). We are going for clean, relatively minimalist, etc. if that gives you all an idea. Our cabinets are going to be a medium gray. White countertops. I am tentively wanting high gloss/almost white sandblasted glass type of tile for backsplash. We have (just about) finally decided on wolf/sub-zero for the appliances. Our kitchen is open to a family room off one side, and has a large kitchen eating area as well. This will all no doubt be a well-used area. I would like this area to have some colour, but not go crazy.

Here are my questions, oh wise gardenweb community:

1. Should we go with the red knobs on the wolf appliances (which I understand are the "signature look") or go with black?

2. If we pick red, are we kind of married to using red in our colour scheme in the kitchen? Red would not be my first choice.

3. Keeping in mind grey cabinetry, medium brown walnut floors and white countertops, I would like any and all suggestions for general colour scheme in the kitchen. Again, I don't want huge colour. I'm not about to paint all my walls green or something. But I would like to bring colour in by way of such things as nice area carpet in family room area, wall art, bowls and other accessories in kitchen, bar stools at the island eating bar, etc. At MOST I would be prepared to perhaps paint a feature wall with a non-neutral colour, but even this makes me leery.

I have seen people use the red knobs in their kitchen and yet ignore the red. With that being said, I am going with a Bluestar and I thought about doing a colored knob, they have several reds. I couldn't decide. And then I thought I have absolutely no other red at all in the house so I just went with the black knobs.

I like to make my accent colors come from things that are inexpensive, such as great dish towels, pillows, a vase, maybe a bowl to leave out. I've also been known to leave out produce that matches the color scheme. (eggplants, or limes, lemons, even carrots.)

So, it's really up to you.

I'm buying up orange accent color stuff for the new kitchen. Got some fab dishtowels at Target!

mpagmom, I have only decided to put a stainless steel sheet behind the stove for now, and planned to paint the walls. But,with the white cab/dark grey counter scheme I have been thinking that I might run a strip of tile in a soft blue, grey or sage green, instead of counter materiel, for a small backsplash for now. I don't like the look of a 4" backsplash; it will have to be either minimal or the whole wall eventually. I saw a kitchen (linked below) that started me on the blue/gray/green color idea although I wouldn't go exactly like it, I like the feeling of it. It is interesting to me. I thought I liked it as is, but the pictures you posted are fabulous lukki. I love the green. I would probably lean towards cream though too. I just find it jarring to have the front so different than the rest of the house. I actually do not like it at all, yet have somehow ended up in that kind of house twice in a row! the one i Have now has brick on the entire front and then White vinyl siding on the other three sides. Why? why? :)

Are the top and bottom cabinets different colours? Or perhaps is it just the one with the plug points above it that is white, and the rest cream? I haven't put it in the mock-up for reasons of time, but I would paint the bottom to match the tops if it is possible. Then paint the ceiling moulding the same colour. Switch the very bright blue for navy?

Nice home and yard. Definitely would not paint any brick. Would not add shutters; instead, would flank the left window with a pair of shrubs that keep their attractive appearance year round. In planting Zone 7, consider aucuba bushes or holly bushes or even the kind of abelia bushes that keep its leaves year round -- any shrub that looks good year round. Your door is a dark (wood?) finish and is more dominant than the garage door, as it should be. If your front door is to be painted, it could be repainted your favorite dark bold color with the same effect as long as you left your garage door a lighter color -- preferably one that makes it visually disappear rather than stand out -- which is likely why its current color was chosen. Your left window is white but there appears to be a dark (?brown?) trim stripe around it -- yet your larger center window grouping appears to have a darker frame as well as a dark (?brown?) trim stripe around it. If most of your windows are one color or the other, consider painting all windows and window frames so they'll be the same color. This light brick home is one that would look good with white windows and all white trim around doors and windows and white soffit and fascia as well -- even a white garage door and trim. Sage green could tend to make this brick look more pink than beige and you should at least test any paint color you are considering. Paint something and after it dries, then place it in front of the brick and look at it in different light (bright sun and twilight) before making a final decision.

I liked the red knobs initially and would go with them if my decor would match. But since you are unsure about using red, I would go with black. I would also find out how much it costs/if it is possible to switch the knobs if you decide to switch decor. I think the wolf label under the glass is signature enough.

I am putting the red knobs in my kitchen of white marble, walnut island and white cabinets. I am not a fan of red. I figure if I hate them I can buy the black and switch them (which I may do). Just didn't think to specify black when I ordered it. If I switch them out, I'll keep the red for the next owner :)
