end panels, furniture ends?? help!
Comments (16)khallock, I don't think plywood ends is the same as furniture ends. You know that little indent behind the face frame where the sides meet the front? That is eliminated with furniture ends because the side wood is thicker. I think plywood ends is just better quality than stock ends, but is still the same thickness, leaving that little indent. Here is a pic of furniture ends, the sides meet smoothly like on furniture. (not the molding part, but the part next to the door.) The pics by a2gemini shows the door panel meeting the faceframe flush, but on the right of her pic you can see a cab where that little lip is, the lip that furniture ends eliminates. I don't know how door/end panel would go on with that little lip.... As far as diy, we don't have a table saw but can borrow one. My brother does a ton of work with habitat for humanity and has built dressers out of wood, so he could help in a pinch. We can handle a level (have several) and a miter saw, but we are replacing stock cabinets with stock cabinets so don't anticipate much cutting. We'll have a granite guy reinstall our granite, so I know he will double check the level of the lowers (as he did during original install.) Luckily, we are not afraid to eat out (and do too much!) so if we have to stop and hire a contractor mid install, we will....See Moreapplied end panels vs no end panel
Comments (4)I'm having a little trouble envisioning what you mean by applied end panels. I have side panels on my cabinets and wouldn't have it any other way. They just make the cabinets looks so much more finished and beautiful. I recently had the master bath cabinets painted and added the end panels and wow what a difference! They went from looking builder grade to furniture quality. I will try to add some pics, photobucket is not as easy as it used to be, I had more to show but it's just nearly impossible to get photos to show up in photobucket and it takes forever. The first two photos are my house and the 3rd one is a show house in our area from a few months ago....See MorePlywood end panels or 'door style'?
Comments (16)Thanks - I have seen the door style end panels on some of the kitchens here, but come to think of it, they've all been square. The arch is a little too busy. These are Merillat cabinets, they call the 3/16" oak veneer plywood a "wall end panel " (WEP) and the kind with the door on it a "wall decorative end panel" (WDEP). I'll go with the "skin" to make the ends flush, and have real lacquered wood (even though it's veneer) there instead of the fake wood-grain laminate. Now, wondering - I have a tall corner cabinet that I need about 6" on each side of. You really won't see it when the crown is applied on the lower cabinets flanking it. But it would help to make the sides flush just to install the crown on the taller cabinet. Is it worth ordering the WEPs longer than I need and cutting them down so I can do the sides of all 3 cabinets? 1/4" plywood would be too thick. Also need to do it to tops of refrigerator end panels - I'm not sure why those aren't flush, I don't want to do the whole 7ft, but do need a strip just to shim out the sides for the crown wrapping around. Cut them from 36" or 42" panels I order for 30" cabinets? Order one 30" to use as is and a 42" to cut another foot off to use for shims?...See MoreHelp ! How do we finish the end panels
Comments (15)Thanks for the comments and I will check out the rolled veneer. I've posted this on the wood working forum as well so I'm getting a little confused about posting, new to this, but the feed back so so helpful! The problem is sending it to be painted if it is rolled up. You can tell we have never done this before. We thought that getting the doors painted with car paint they would be more durable, which we think they are. But we tried to match the paint on our own, to do the finishing bits, and it hasn't worked. So it looks like we will need to send all the finishing pieces to be painted as well. We thought about the 1/8 inch skin for it but don't know how to attach it or finish the edge or where to get it. I've included an additional photo of the kitchen there is a bit more done since this last photo was taken....See Moreshanny75
