I got some free hostas tonight

A house in the next block from me is getting a new porch. Today when I walked Lila, I stopped and talked with one of the workers, who turned out to be the son of the owners. I was asking about the hostas and he said I could come back tonight and dig up the ones in a brick planter. I think I got about 6 but I will check when I plant them tomorrow.

The past couple of years I have bought some hostas at a nursery but this year I was determined to get free ones.

love hostas..the plant that keeps giving...i think i have all the hostas on the property from the original ones 25 years ago...not so good with my iris...they havn't flourished, but have less sun for them...and my day lillies need to be thinned...another freebie!

Linda, it is a shame you are not closer. Last year we dug a bunch up, split them and gave them out. I even put a box on the street with free to go home. And this year another bunch is out. They all need splitting.

Found another 'blue' earlier this evening--and taking this pic. at dusk really brought the blue out!! It looks really odd, with the 'Guardian Angel' leaves also in the pic. on the right! The clue, that the color was not tweaked to be more blue, is the edge of the leaf of 'Katie Q' at the upper right and a couple of the leaves of the daylillies! Dusk definitely had an effect on bringing out the 'blues', all over my garden!!! :o) Was really fun snapping pics. in that lighting!!

Sounds fun! I was antsy today so I took the kids to the thrift store. We bought some $.25 wood pieces. The kids are busy painting and glueing tonight. We'll have bird houses, snowflakes, and clothespin reindeer ornaments for Christmas.

thanks all. Potted them up in some decent soil and put it in the shade. In a huge deep pot. Unfortunately the garden bed they will eventually go in is non existent at the moment. Still in the process of being built. The roots were just bare and hanging on the bottom so it wasnt sustainable to let them be. Will leave them until next summer to divide as to not stress them to much. There are a number of plants in this clump. I have an unheated shed that should work for the winter.Thanks all for all the help, looking forward to getting more hostas.

Yep Don it looks good and is most likely a montana hybrid too for my montana collection, as are LS. Cha Cha, Niagara Falls, and Jade Cascade is a montana mac. hybrid, Hollywood Lights is in the family too! Linda, thats great to hear, thanks. Sandyslopes, yes the roots are great which shows great promise for the future which is the important thing, still a bit disappointed about the leaves but mabey they were just too big for the box. Another question, can a hosta grow roots without leaves? I would think not but don't know. Denis

I love hostas. The thick leaved, solid green ones especially. They repel the slugs the best. I don't care for the frilly variegated ones. When we had our house (previous marriage) I always cut the flowers off. I like them for the greenery, not the flowers. :)

Oh I want to plant some too, I love them. I need to ask my garden club ladies if any of them have some to share. We do a lot of sharing and cuttings.

I've given plenty of Hosta, daffodils, and yucca away for free on Craigslist. They are always gone in no time.

I love free plants. I've gotten a lot of free plants just by stopping by someone's house to ask what something was, and they either had starts of it or suckers or gave me cuttings or seeds. Never hurts to ask! I'm going next week to help someone thin out some overgrown beds so I can have the stuff I thin out. I love doing that! If you ever see a huge clump of anything that needs thinning, ask the owner if you can help them thin it for free in exchange for some of the bulbs/divisions.

Last year I was walking the dogs in my daughter's town when I came upon all these hostas out to the curb for the garbage man. I ran back to her house and we piled in her Mini Cooper and made two trips with the hostas. She got six and so did I and they all came up this year.

And hostas are so forgiving....as Ken, of the hosta forum says, throw them in the driveway and they will do well! I was afraid I would lose some this year, as we had so little snow cover, but think it was only one, a new one last year, of course. It was Orange Marmalade, and such a beauty.

I have hostas that need a new home. 6 huge ones. Their shade tree, a 100 year old American Elm died and these poor hostas are suffering in the now full sun. I have nowhere shady for them. Any takers...you have to dig them out.

Gazania, I had the same problem. Hosta in the back of my house were in the shade until a tree was taken down. Now they the sun bleaches them out but they still look okay, just more yellow than green! I love when they flower.

I have hosta in all the beds around my house. I just love them. Many came from the side of my grandmother's house. I bought a few big greenish-blue ones and those don't seem to be spreading like the others. They stay more or less in a clump. They are so pretty, if the deer don't get them.

Hosta is like candy for deer. They don't often come up as far as my house, but when they do, they can really level off the garden rather quickly. The people in the houses at the end of my street back up to the woods. I think they have given up gardening, except daffodils!

If I have to divide the hsta or iris, or dig back the pachysandra, I always put them out at the end of the driveway with a "please adopt me" sign.
