I thought I wanted a large single sink like everybody else. Afterall that's what a lot of people on GW claim to love. But then I had my doubts. I never was totally sold on the idea. Mainly because we actually do fill up the sink with soapy water quite often. Maybe this is because I've never had a $1200 dishwasher. I don't trust my delicate glasses in the cheapo dishwasher nor do I like the way the plastics don't dry. And of course I always handwash all of my knives. So I became skeptical of the one sink concept and the inconvenience of having to drag out a dishpan every night after dinner. It was like a lightbulb went on in my head when I realized that I belonged to the double sink camp regardless of what is popular. We haven't built yet, but I actually felt a sense of relief when I decided we'd do a double sink with a low divide. We handwash knives every night and only wash cookie sheets about 5 times a year. Always think about your personal needs and style of doing things.

Although there is definitely a bias against double bowl sinks on the GW, there is a subgroup that loves them and knows how to work with them. I've ordered a full double sink and a full sized single sink. They will face one another across the kitchen. The large single sink should accommodate many large items that don't fit the double sink, esp. the dehydrator trays which we now carry to the basement to scrub. Don't know if I'm going to like this sink configuration once it's installed, but it should allow 2 cooks (and an auto repair guy and two veg gardeners and a messy cook and a flower arranger and the dog bucket and a manic dinner party giver) to work together and keep the action flowing. Not only that, but I confess to using a plastic dishpan within my current double sink. It protects the sink and the dishes and allows me to pull it up to access the drain if I need to (such as when I have something greasy to rinse off and there are clean items in the second bowl already). I also know that the dishpan is always clean, not to be used to hold garage rinse-offs, compost, etc. A household policy. I also use a divider protector to prevent clunking of dishes on it. Don't know if I will still do this, but I suspect I will. I buy white ones, occasionally boil them in bleach water to keep them clean. Or run them through the dishwasher. Also, I use a basin or a container to hold rinse water as often as possible. Why waste that water? Rinse responsibly! I agree with so much that has been said about double sinks here. Many of us just can't imagine how to cope if there's not a place to access a drain quickly in the heat of battle and when there's a need for a clean sink RIGHT NOW! Many people say that you can put a container within a mega-single-bowl sink to hold water for washing, but when somebody's dumped a lot of oily slop from salad plates into the drain area, what do you do when you need to plunk another item into the sink and keep it from getting that slop on it? You end up grabbing a second or third container to accommodate that piece anyway! Remember: it's best not to plan a kitchen for the unusual and rare moment but for the usual day-to-day. You can always take that turkey roaster to the basement laundry tub to soak after a holiday meal. Millions have done it for years and years.

Greendesign-I wish I had your budget, I really do. You are blessed to be able to afford such nice things. We are not doing a simple cosmetic renovation. We purchased out fixer upper 2 1/2 years ago, I have been living with rotted formica cabinets that are original to our 1970s house for over 2 years. They have no doors on them, I made some pitiful curtains to put on the outside just so you cannot see the gross interiors. I don't even use them for storage of any items, they are *that* gross. My refrigerator does not have an ice maker, only 3 of my stove's burners work. We need ALL new appliances. I would love to have Viking and Wolf and Thermador, but alas, it is not to be. I am fine with it, though. We picked up our dream home that just 5 years ago sold for double what we paid. I have actually made some beautiful meals here in this pitiful kitchen, so I know that having the best of everything does not mean the food tastes better. Soooo...there **is** an answer to my original question, and thanks to other posters I have found sinks that meet my requirements. I understand that they are not up to par with your standards, but I wasn't asking about that. akchicago-That is a good idea, possibly upgrading the faucet. When we had to replace our shower head, my DH told me to go to Home Depot and only buy one made in the USA. I could not find one! Not one! We "get" that made in USA is better (usually) but it does seem increasingly difficult to find, and the companies are so sneaky about it! If all I was buying was one item, I would search out made in USA along with my other requirements. At this point, I am overwhelmed by the scope of the project, as well as overwhelmed financially. We have been doing craigslist shopping and plan to go to some scratch and dent sales. Seems like sinks are the one thing we are not finding used or at many outlet locations. alwaysfixin-thank you thank you thank you! Going to show that link to DH right now! Now, in agreeing with green...do you mean you put all your pots and pans and china and wine glasses in your dishwasher? Green did not answer that part of my question, so just curious as to what others do. And the Kraus that I like is 35.9". Yes, I definitely want the bowls to be big. My double bowl sink right now is 33" and I knew I wanted a wee bit bigger. I kind of agree that the *point* of a FH sink is to be single bowl...wouldn't you say? If DH and I both prefer double bowl, and we are both in our 40s, I am sorry, we just don't feel like *trying* to get used to something new at this point! But again, I think it is kind of "cheating" and getting the look of a FH sink without being a TRUE FH sink. You don't say what the sink is used for -- mostly prep, rinsing, and hand-washing a few dishes -or- do you wash all your dishes by hand? Who uses it the most -- you or your DH? Is it your only sink? If not and you use the other sink while your DH uses this sink, then get him what he wants. However, if it is your only sink and it needs to be used by you for prepping and your DH for cleaning up (or some combination), then I think more discussion is needed with your DH. Most people use their sinks for the former (prep, rinsing, hand-washing a few dishes). Double-bowl sinks in a cabinet less than 33" wide results in bowls too small for most work. Even with a wider sink base, it can be an issue if you go with equal-sized bowls. We had equal-size bowls in a 36" sink base and the bowls were too small to clean much and too big for small tasks such as soaking silverware. I hated that sink! If you must have a double-sink, then I strongly recommend you go with a double-bowl sink with unequal sizes. In our new Kitchen, we have a 36" wide sink base with 70/30 bowls: 21"W large bowl, 10"W small bowl. They're perfect! My DH does most of the cleanup and he uses the small bowl to soak silverware and prep/cooking utensils while he does a quick rinse of the other dishes b/f putting them in the DW in the large bowl. He also hand-washes the few dishes we don't put in the DW (e.g., knives and larger pots/pans). The small side is also useful for prepping & cooking. If you are stuck with a 30" sink base, then I strongly recommend going with a single-bowl sink. You can always use a basin for smaller items when needed. Normally, I'm in the 2-bowl camp, but only if the sink base is wide enough.
