Do you have a weather alert radio?

Forgot I had one, and pulled it out of the drawer and battery still works.

Have it on my pc desk now.

Mine is just a little square box that you just push a little button and it comes on.

Must have paid less than ten bucks for it years ago.

I have one probbly like it it was my Mom's from back in 1983. It is brown and looks nice on the desk.

I have the weather channels on my portables too. if bad weather is coming we have the TV and radios on.

We keep saying we need to buy one. The problem is we do not have one safe place to go in this house.

Jolana,Well.... The heat during the DAY is OK. I wouldn't like vote for 100 degrees with 99% humidity (without rain! that's like a trick or something)I must say tho, Night humidity SUCKS. I'll bet there was a lot of insomnia and cranky people back before air conditioning. Good thing they'd be too warn out to shoot at each other accurately or we all might not be here. Humidity is a lot kinder to plants tho so at least there's a trade off. It's it amazing how things just suddenly just like green up over night? I use pictures to keep track of what plants are where so mine just looks dead. PJ

Well, Brian, have come back to the premise that simple is best. As I said, once upon-a-time had a weather band radio (with no other radio bands included) that worked flawlessly for a long time and was carried in the popup camper for use campside where-ever. Although you had to manually tune the scanner to find just where on the band the weather broadcast could be heard, at least, it would work. One day on a long road trip drove off leaving that radio on a picnic table and then realizing what I had done many, many miles on down the road! Looked everywhere to find a replacement for that simple, inexpensive weather radio and just could not find one - (think it came from K-Mart). Anyway, ended up replacing it with Oregon Scientific model which had all kinds of whistles and bells and almost required an engineering degree to operate - and at best could only get it to work part-time! Well, you know all about that story. Had to go down to Charleston yesterday and stopped off at one of those K-Mart super stores and found a cheap replacement that I'm pleased with. It's a Jensen model MR-550 - has three bands - AM/FM and weather. Battery operated (two AA, not included), can also work with an optional AC adaptor (have to send off for - $9.95 + 3.00 S&H) and a feature that sold me on the little radio ... it also has internal re-chargeable nickel metal hydride (Ni-MH) batteries. To charge these batteries there is a "dynamo" manual charge hand crank - you crank this thing and a little red light comes on saying that it is charging and after about 60 seconds of cranking another amber light comes on saying that it's charged. The instruction sheet says this will give you about 20 minutes of radio playing time but in trying it out I can get an honest 15 minutes of strong radio, and then it rapidly dies out. What I like about this feature is should you be out in the middle of nowhere and find yourself battery-less, you can crank this thing up and listen to what's going on, even if it's only for 15 minutes at a crack. Bottom line is I'm well please with the solid construction and performance of this good sounding little radio - (dimensions are 6" high, 3 1/4" wide and 2 1/4" front to back) - AND, well pleased at the price ... $14.99 (with tax $15.74)! Certain areas of San Francisco will frost, my north facing backyard will get frosty, so I do have to cover my citrus and bring some of the plants into the greenhouse for shelter, one potted hydrangea i forgot to cover , is a little frostbitten. i hope the cymbidiums will finally spike some buds, it needed the temperature drop. I did bring the masdevillas into the green house during the night and the potted Hawaiian Ti leaf plant. Wind Chill, burrrrr

Yes I just read your message above Alicia, I would love to send you an SASE, I know what that is but iim brand new here so no clue how to send messages etc,...I did change my account to recieve messages,.... but let me know I'm trying so hard to get my place growing, I just moved here and open to all kinds of ideas, flowers or veggies......I have a few seeds to trade but not much you probably have all them already or better. I have one but I don't use it. Before I bought it, a friend tried to tell me I would not like it. There are tornado sirens near my house that would wake me from a sound sleep. During the day, whenever I know the weather could turn bad, I keep the TV on. I also get weather alerts e-mailed to me.

Mine does not come on automatically. I just press when I want to hear. It's a little square box.

I too have the siren near me.

We have one we use in the summer--our busy hurricane/tropical storm season. And for Christmas this year, Harry's daughter got him one we crank up so if the electricity goes out we can still hear the weather (as long as our arms hold out).

We have sirens in case there is an accident at the nuclear power plant in our county......we are downwind.

We have one that was given out at a county function. I programmed it for my area and a loud alarm will ring for weather alerts. The one thing that they stressed when giving them out-you don't always know when bad weather is coming, especially at night. Its an alarm for weather watches and warnings and there is also a button you can push to hear the current conditions anytime.

I have a weather band radio on my alarm clock. Button to push to get a report. I also have a weather band in the suv(built in/standard equipment with a Land Rover).

Yes we do and I bet it has gone off over 100 times since Friday afternoon...I wouldn't be without it though. We live in an area where you can't hear sirens unless you are outside.

Sirens aren't meant to be heard inside buildings. They're only meant for a certain distance from the siren and outside.

I have several weather alert radios. The last one I got can be programmed for which alerts I want to receive. I don't want to get an alert for watches, flood warnings and the like. I want storm and tornado warnings to go off. Don't care about freeze warnings either so it's nice to choose which one I get.

Need to get it out, reprogram it and set it up. Tornado season y'know.

Just have the one I turn on myself. The other kind was going off ALL the time, even when I didn't have flash flood, etc. alerts on. Just to many thunderstorms set it off.

I do have my cell phone set to go off when there is severe weather. We have the County reverse 911 here. That works better for us. I have it by my bed in it just buzzes (I always use vibrate setting). It just wakes me up - not the whole house. I can get up and watch the weather if needed and let everyone else sleep.

Mine got buried in a pile on my dresser. When I finally pulled it out the batteries were dead. Shame on me.

No. Our weather is pretty mild. We'd need an earthquake alert system if such a thing is ever made possible to have in the home. LOL
