Welcome door hanging

This is a requested door hanging for our daughter's classroom door....she teaches the deaf......and, this spells out WELCOME. Her room is wild....lots of die-dye, VWs, peace signs (the kids LOVE it), so I made this one with the left over VW fabric that I used to make my husband a quilt for his VW camper! (see, saving scraps DOES pay off!!!)

That is just TOO COOL! I'm teaching my daughter sign language now, and she saw this and said "Oh, the alphabet!". What a neat thing for the kids to see on their way in to class!

Wow, all of you are SO helpful! I agree, I can't get on board with a gold. The tones of the stone just do not show up in the photos, lots of yellowy-peachy tones. I was hoping to do something to get away from that. Now I am concerned about doing something darker. Oh dear!! I think I got my husband on board with a purple/wine/eggplant but now have concerns that many of you think it is not light enough. Back to the drawing board??

Thanks so much everybody! :-) The original piece was just a plain flat unfinished wooden plaque I purchased from Michaels. Everything else you see there I painted on it. There is no extra piece of tin on it; that's just trompe l'oel -- just shading around the "tin" part. The stripes were to make it a little "Mackenzie Childs." I love their stuff.

Cpartist- This is just a quick idea....I know you said you wanted a slider in the kitchen, but I really wanted to play around with the banquette idea! Disregard, if you don't like.... The buffet is behind the sofa, being used as both buffet and sofa table. The big front window has a window seat with shelves/cabinets on both sides. They could be low or high...maybe with a few plants on top! The back patio is wonderful. Any chance of extending the covered portion out towards the pool just a few feet? I know you have those roofing/square footage constraints, but it might be nice to have a little more shade. It's a great plan! I know you're going to love it :) Oh, that's supposed to be columns with vines (blooming) and maybe small plant area around it. Just enough for a little color!

Sliding door replacement - other options welcome

I would definitely not remove the picture window. If an operable opening is not a priority for you I think replacing the sliding door with a picture window, similar to the one on the right, would look great. Since it would coordinate with the existing window it will still look intentional. Sounds like either way you have to replace the sliding door with either a new sliding door or a window due to rotting. I would imagine that a sliding door would be more expensive than one or two large fixed windows --you may be surprised. Hope this helps!

That is just the thing! The kids will love it. I have 2 deaf cousins (twins) and studied ASL for about a year, so that brings back memories.

Jennifer in VA......our daughter developed her interest in signing while in grade school - we had friends that worked at our state rehabilitation hosp and we were on 'campus' one day....a deaf fellow was coming toward us on the sidewalk and started signing to Bill, our friend, who signed back. Chris was fascinated, and so Bill taught her the alphabet....(she learned it immediately, and he said she was the 'quickest study' he'd ever seen, and was a natural at it). In Jr High, she started taking signing classes, and when a friend had a deaf daughter, she became even more interested, with personal involvement . This interest led her to get a degree in deaf education, teach signing classes, and head the group for the licensing of interpretors. Her greatest compliment is when deaf individuals believe her to also be deaf! and, all this, a life's work, all because of a childhood interest! You just never know what will have an impact on a child's life, do you.

How clever! My son took four semesters of American Sign Language for his foreign language requirement in college. I'll have to show him your welcome sign.
