wine in a basket

Hi, A friend asked if I would make a quilt with a wine theme, so she could add it to her basket of wine for a charity auction...that was in March. I still consider my self a real novice at quilting,but I said sure,I'll do it...what was I thinking. Anyway, with the help of many of you on the forum for advice, (Marsha, the pattern choice worked great!) and fabric.com for wine fabrics, it's finally finished. It's a tad busy for my tastes, but hey, with a glass of red wine in hand, a little spillage will never be noticed!

This is my first FMQ quilt ... my learnings from this quilt:

-FMQ is not scary

-The BSR is my friend

-Volunteering when you aren't ready is foolish

-Seek out and follow the advice on the forum.

Now on to the next project (for me :-)!

You did a wonderful job. I love Marsha's pattern. I don't think it is too busy at all and your choice of fabrics and border is perfect. You deserve a blue ribbon.

Be careful. When they see this they might ask for more.

Thanks Lyfia - At least someone gets it! But frankly, I was actually a little bit annoyed because I too had to take time off from work to go get this legal notice. And there's simply no reason on earth why notice can't be both legal and pleasant. For what it's worth, both Builder A and Builder B live in this neighborhood and have children in the same elementary school as mine -- and many of their home buyers also already live in this neighborhood and are 'move up' buyers. So it makes both business and social sense to be nice and cultivate relationships. Both A and B are also in the market to buy more lots for future tear-downs, so yet another reason to be nice about it. To those who are wondering, I believe in our village that it IS required to notify the neighbors, particularly if there is anything in the building plan that requires a variance. Variances are hard to get around here, and there was no mention of one in the legal notice, so I don't know... For what it's worth, Builder A did exceed his height limitation by 3 feet -- but it doesn't bother us and we're not mentioning it. Of course, we talked to all of our neighbors in person to let them know what our remodeling plans are, and have conducted regular 'progress tours' whenever anyone has shown an interest. DH has also done several minor repairs for 4 of our 6 elderly neighbors (he volunteered and worked for free) as a way of thanking them for putting up with our mess. The tear-downs has been a mixed blessing for us. While RE values have gone way up, the market has forced us to do a much larger renovation than we initially wanted to do. The market shift happened mid-way through our remodel, and made a nice, 'regular-sized' home (what we were aiming for) functionally obsolete. Since DH IS a professional remodeler, we opted to follow the market lead and expand, but it's costing a bundle to get to the point where we'll be able to see a healthy profit. And in the meantime, the taxes are eating our lunch!

I live in Montreal and I am not sure if they have any baskets with wine, but this place does beautiful baskets. Quebec is pretty strick with their laws on wine selling so I am not sure if anyone would have wine to send. But I can vouch for this seller Here is a link that might be useful: Look here

OP here... Thank you to everyone for the suggestions. After some additional legwork, I found something that will work for me at a price I can manage. They are NOT quality baskets, but at $1.95 each, they will definitely be good enough for now. I hope that in the future, I'll be able to find/afford something of better quality, but at least now I have something that will work and can stop thinking about this decision (and move on to obsessing over something else). Work is still in progress on the kitchen, but here is a picture of a couple of the baskets in place (sorry it seems a little out of focus). My coffee maker will probably be in the corner of the kitchen under these cubbies so I will probably put coffee and tea supplies in the lower baskets and who-knows-what higher up. Thanks again!

Does she like wine at all and does she know anything about it? Makes a dif. If no and no, then anything goes - usually something sweet and fruity. If yes and yes, find out what she likes and get that.

I hope you took some close- up pictues of the quilting. You'll want to look at them a year from now to mark your developing skill.

I love it!!!! Your fussy cutting is perfect and appealing; the 9 patches force the eye to flow easily.....and your FMQing looks very good. This should bring high $ bids.
I found the 9PP to be very addicting! perfect for a 'Theme Quilt' and the Wine Motifs just shine. Initially, I also thought the technique had a busy look, but after visiting 2 of my wine quilts - they were gifts -and hanging them in our Guild's quilt show, the busy-ness added to the wow factor!
You should be very excited and above all else....very proud!
You are making a label for the quilt right??????

Jen's right about the light color binding - it is perfect!!!

I agree with Kate-you need to take close-up pics of your quilting, front and back in different places for the future.

We are so lucky, as quilters, to have instant , digital pictures to help us along the way.

Yes, I'll do a label or just write it on the backing w/the appropriate pen I read others have used, which sounds easy to me. I like the 9PP, and will do another in the future!

The quilt is beautiful. The theme, colors and overall coordination of binding, borders, etc. are perfect. Lucky winner who gets the basket. Even though red wine stains wouldn't be too bad, I'll bet they don't stain it, it's too pretty.

I think it turned out beautifully! And I love the border on your quilt and the way you did the binding on it. Awesome job! I have never done FMQ on the sewing machine, but hopefully will learn that at some point in the future. What type of batting did you use on this wine quilt that you did the FMQ on? What does BSR stand for? Congrats on getting another quilt finished!

BSR: Balance stitch regulator - part of an upgrade when I traded in and up on a bernina. It kept the stitches even while I stumbled through my first FMQ. It was intimaditing at first...but I've started a quilted tote today w/ another design. I took a quick photo of the back. LOL this is just too addicting...I've got to get the laundry done, the dogs want to go out..% *#!! :-)
Sandra, I'm not sure of batting,standard cotton I think...it was on sale at the little quilt shop where I've been taking lessons.
