Glue basting / binding

I was surfing quilting sites as I'm prone to do late at night and came across Pile o Fabric. Interesting site, but what caught my attention was glue basting pieces and particularly setting your binding with elmer's school glue before sewing. Has anyone tried this technique?

I always use this technique for binding.

You lay a small, continuous bead of glue down on the very edge of the quilt and lay the binding on it as if you were going to pin it in place. Then you press the binding to the quilt before you machine stitch it on. You don't get the stretching or puckering you can get and the borders aren't wavy. It seems to keep everything flatter. This is the Sharon Schamber technique she teaches.

You have to use a tiny bead of glue and it needs to be the Elmers school glue. It washes out and seems harmless to the fabric. Try it.

Aha! The gal doing the tutorial on pileofabric.com is Christy Fincher, the daughter of Sharon Schamber.

I've not used this technique but might try it on something small to get the hang of it. As far as glue basting to get perfect points, I'm not sure what that's about. If I'm having trouble getting points to match perfectly (and if it matters just how unperfect they are), I'll sew that area first, by hand. Needle in the point of one side, needle in the point on the other side and draw them together making sure they are 'perfect' then take a few stitches on both sides of the point, to hold it in place. Maybe that's where the glue would come in....next to the initial stitch?

Teresa, I read about it here on the forum. Cutting the little pieces was time consuming so I just went at it with the rotary. I like to take stitch witchery and cut it into bits. I mean TINY bits. I fringe it in maybe 1/8" fringe...and then cut across the tips of the fringe to make tiny little pieces. I will do this over the course of a few nights of TV watching to get a good-size jar full. Then, when I'm ready to "baste, I lay down the batting on a big table and smooth it all out. Then, I take my tiny bits of stitch witchery and just scatter it over the batting - not real heavy, but a generous amount of bits. Then I top with the backing and get it all smooth. Then iron it. The backing is now tacked to the batting. I flip them over and repeat the process with the quilt top. It takes just a few minutes and works really well. 2 more things to play with, while learning bindings: There is a "stich n ditch" foot for machine-sewing bindings on in one step. (I know one is available at newarkdress.com, but I don't know which machines it fits). I used one constantly when making DD's clothes; it takes a bit of practice to learn, but it does a beautiful job. The other is an easy binding-with-flange. This is perfect for those backings meant to be repeated in the border: Measure/cut the filling to the width/length you want, extending to include the finished border. Measure/cut the backing plus double the width you want for the finished border plus 1/4" seam allowance. When laid out to baste, the layers from the top down will be quilt-top, then the filling with the border-width's extra showing on all sides, then the backing extending another border-width + seam allowance. Sew the flange (single or double fold bias is fine) to the backing's edge, with mitered corners. Press seam toward quilt. Fold the backing over the filling; the flange's seam should align with finished top's edge. Miter corners. Stitch-in-the-ditch along the flange-meets-backing seamline. For light-weight materials and for utility quilts meant to be machine-washed, I use sheer- or feather-weight fusible stabilizer on the back of the binding. This not only adds stability to make sewing easier, it also seems to protect the weave and extend the durability. The binding on the utility-quilt bedspread made for DD over 30 yrs ago still looks unworn. :) I always make a "sample" block. How else to be sure the thickness of the filling and the quilting stitches will finish to look the way I want? Sample blocks are also great for practicing various quilt-stitching patterns. A collection of several (or more) sample blocks can be stitched together for a toddler's nap-quilt; or framed and hung on the wall as a reminder -- I have one that reminds me NOT to use a very small-scale stitch on a medium-loft filling. :)

Hi, Vasu. I use Elmer's School Glue. I used to use it full strength, but now I mix it about 60/40 glue to water. There's less glue to wash out then, and of course it goes further. I tape my backing, right side down of course, to the hardwood floor with painters' tape, putting some tension on it to keep the wrinkles at bay. I spread the batting on the backing, smoothing it out just as if I were gluing it. Then I fold half of the batting back on itself and drizzle the glue right from the bottle back and forth over the exposed backing leaving 3-4" in between lines of glue. I then smooth the batting half back over the glued backing. I repeat the same thing with the second half of the batting. I smooth it out and make sure the glue is fully engaged. Then I do the same thing with the quilt top. Smooth, fold back, glue, unfold and smooth. It usually dries in two or three hours. After I quilt the sandwich and bind it, I wash it with as much water as I can, soaking it first if possible. It really works slick. If you hand stitch the binding, try to avoid getting glue too close to your stitching line. The glue can be really hard to penetrate when hand stitching. My machine goes right through it all easily with absolutely no gumming.

I needed to be told where the error was to see it. I live between two Amish areas. I’ve heard that the Amish will put a mistake in a quilt on purpose because “only God is perfect”. Don’t know if that’s true ( the mistake, not God, LOL) but it’s a nice thought. Love your quilt!

Toolgranny...if you've had success with binding and glue...I will definitely give this a try.

Sharon, I'm with you as far as piecing. Gluing seems to be an extra step...although it might be advantageous if you were doing the small postage stamp quilt block, like the one Vicky posted the other day. I can see this working for something really small, but I doubt I'll be doing anything that small in the near future. worth considering though for perfection.

I use her technique for bindings and applique and have never had a problem.

I read about using glue for basting and haven't had much success with that one.

I use it for basting on small (baby) quilts and I'm not sure if it's any faster than pinning. When I tried it on a lap size I wasn't happy with it at all.
