Sewing Machine Cabinet Questions

I'm using a 17 year old Kenmore sewing machine which works fine but it is portable & I'd like to have a cabinet for it. I'd like to have it in one of those cabinets where it would fit down inside and then lift up when you want to use it. I see cabinets for sale in thrift & consignment stores, etc. Would one of those work for my machine, or does the cabinet have to be made for the specific machine? And if you do have your machine in a cabinet can it be taken out easily to take to a class?

I've had machines in cabinets before that have certainly been portable. I think it might depend on the setup.

When looking at cabinets, be sure to have the measurement of the base of you machine, the height to the needle bed, and look for a place for the cording to reach the machine. If you expect the table to close up with the machine then you'll need to be careful of the measurements for overall height and how it fits down into the table.

Yup, measure the machine then measure the opening in the cabinet (including the height when lowered). There will also be places on the bottom of the machine to attach it to the base in the cabinet (which usually has multiple holes for this). It may be easier to take the machine with you to see if it will fit and can be attached.

I don't know anything about those two machines,just mostly Singers, but I would not buy her a new one since she will only be making "fun " things. I would buy a older Singer machine made before the 1970s. I have a Singer 403 [1960s]. It has cams for some fancy stitches, which I never use. I only use the zig zag stitch. Most of the time I use my OLD Singer 201 straight stitch for which I would never part with. You can find these machines for far less than 300.00. Check out your local sewing machine shops, ebay or Craigslist. Of course this is only my suggestion. Good luck. Philanna

I "googled" your model number and found several forums where they discussed what a poorly written manual you have. You might search for a Yahoo group that discusses various sewing machine or the Kenmore machines. Or just 'play' with it. Get a piece of medium wt white fabric, put colored thread in and start trying out various stitches. My Viking machine has a picture of the various stitches printed on the actual top of the machine along with a 'number' which is what one enters on the keypad. One of the posters talking about your machine seemed to indicate the machine would make monograms but that was an additional software that would need to be purchased.

The most solid and best looking seams are often flat felled seams or frech seams. Especially finer light fabrics need the double stitching of the flat felled seam for strength and support. The Featerweight has two very nice feller feet, a narrow and a wide one. It can be ideal instead of a stretchy seam. For finishing hems there are several ways about the zigzag or overlocker seams on most fabrics. The only thing you cannot get is a stretchy seam that maches the stretchiness of the fabric, but there are ways about even the stretchiest fabric when using only straight stitching. If the fabric frays horribly you can cut out pieces with pinking shears then sew a straight seam along the edges, with a fairly short stitch and fine thread. you can even sew along the marks before you cut out the pieces. (Silk velvets for example can be difficult that way). With the worst fabrics you will probably need to tidy up a bit of loose threads along the edges even when using pinking shears. Some of the zigzaggers for the old straight stitchers are easier to work with than others. The narrow types from Singer and Greist are nice, the ones with small flat cams or built in cams you regulate with a lever on the side. There are lots of different zigzag atachments, I have only tried the most common ones. The large black zigzagger with cams that look like red knobs is horrible to edge with, it stitches niced but it's very hard work to guide the fabric and get the seam in the right place.

I have a Horn cabinet for my Viking Sapphire. The lift shelf was adjusted at the factory for both size and weight. There is a clear plastic filler thing that sits around the sewing machine level with the table top so nothing falls through.

I would imagine that the homeowner could adjust the up & down part if needed. I had directions for doing that with my original cabinet. Check with you local Horn or Koala dealer. Money can work wonders.

Years ago Mom had an '69 Kenmore with the hinges on the back side - it was a portable. My dad was able to revamp her White sewing table and put the Kenmore in it. It folded down and the top closed.

Yes, thats what I'd like...for the machine to fold down & close the top over it, yet be able to take it out & transport it if need be. Thanks all for your suggestions. I hadn't thought about measuring even. What a dork!
