LOOKING for: 'holiday' punch recipes?

Hi --

I'm wondering if anyone has any great recipes for a punch that would be good at a holiday gathering of adults -- I'd like to find a recipe that's not icky sweet. If it's not already spiked, I'd like a recipe that would be nice with an optional splash/shot added to the glass. A punch that mixes well with different alcohols would be great! (e.g., have bottles of vodka and rum on the side).

You could have the rum at the side to add for the adults with this one:
STRAWBERRY DAIQUIRI PUNCH (serves 8-12)
6 cups fresh strawberries, stems & caps removed (or 6 cups frozen unsweetened strawberries, undrained)
6 oz can frozen limeade concentrate
3/4 cup light rum OR unsweetened pineapple juice
16 oz bottle lemon-lime soda
2 cups ice cubes
Place berries, half at a time in blender or processor. Cover & blend until smooth. Transfer blended berries to large non-metallic pitcher. Stir in limeade concentrate & rum or pineapple juice. Cover & chill until serving time.
Jus tbefore serving, stir in lemon0lim soda & ice. Garnish w/whol berries, if desired.~~A Slice of Paradise

Vodka can be served with this one:
CITRUS COOLER (serves 4)
6 oz can lemonade concentrate, thawed
6 oz can pineapple juice
1/2 quart orange juice
Fresh mint sprigs, for garnish

In a quart jar, combine the lemonade & pineapple juice. Fill the remainder of the jar w/the orange juice. Serve over ice garnished w/fresh mint.~~Food For Thought

Rum can be added to this:
CRANBERRY PUNCH (serves 30)
4 cups cranberry juice
4 cups pineapple juice
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 TBL almond extract
2 liters ginger ale
Fresh fruit slices

Combine the juices, sugar & almond extract in a large pitcher & stir until the sugar dissolves. Chill. Add the ginger ale just before serving. Garnish w/fruit slices. Serve over ice.~~Austin Entertains

If you don't have a recipe you love, why have a punch at all? Just set up a nice bar with the typical offerings and let everyone have their own usual preferences.

If you want a pitcher of a signature/holiday martini or something along those lines, that might be fun, but unless you know there will be a lot of people who LIKE drinking "punch" then why make it?

Okay, here you go. Chicken soup with matzo balls is traditional for Pesach (Passover), but our family, like many families, eat matzo balls in our chicken soup all year round, and chicken soup for Sabbath as well as other holidays. I know scientists disagree, but all I can tell you is that this "Jewish penicillin" really does work for us when we are sick! (Matzo balls optional) Some cooks add dill, parsnips, garlic, etc. -- use whatever you like, but make sure to use a KOSHER chicken and to cook it a LONG time. Hamentaschen are cookies for the holiday of Purim, which celebrates the story told in the Book of Esther. Some people use a yeast dough; this is a cookie-dough recipe. "Hamentaschen" means "Haman's pockets" in Yiddish (Haman is the villain of the story), although I was always told they resembled his three-corner hat. In Israel, they call these cookies "Oznei Haman" -- "Haman's ears"! Poppy is the most traditional filling, and prune and apricot are also very popular, but you can use any flavor you want. I've even seen them with chocolate or peanut butter. Just DON'T use jam instead of filling and DON'T try to puree dried prunes if the store is out of prune filling -- don't ask me how I know! Genuine Jewish Mother Chicken Soup (Eat! Eat!) 1 large cut-up kosher (tastes MUCH better, even if you don't keep kosher; if you can't find one, use organic) chicken, preferably a pullet 1 onion, peeled 2 stalks celery, scraped, no leaves, cut into sticks 2 big carrots, scraped, cut into sticks about 2 T salt a few generous grinds of pepper Put chicken in pot and fill with water to about an inch from top. Bring to boil, reduce heat, and skim. Add everything else, cover, and simmer a LONG time -- at least 1 1/2 hour, but up to 6-7 is better. Discard onion. Remove chicken and save for another use (or you can put some of it back in the soup). If it cooked down too much, add more water to at least half-fill the pot after chicken is removed; don't worry, it will still have the rich chicken flavor. I like the carrots and celery in the soup, but you do what you want. You can strain the soup if you want it to look perfect and aren't in a hurry. If you make it the night before and chill it, you can remove the fat (and save it for cooking), but leave a little for flavor. Serve with matzo balls (below), kreplach, noodles, or rice. Matzo balls 2 T schmaltz* or oil 2 lg eggs, slightly beaten c matzo meal 1 t salt, optional 2 T water (or chicken soup, if you are using oil) Mix schmaltz and eggs. Mix matzo meal with salt and blend. Add water and mix. Cover and chill at least 15 minutes. Boil slightly salted water. Reduce heat to low and add balls (wet hands). Cover and cook 30-40 minutes. *Schmaltz is rendered chicken fat. You can buy it frozen in a kosher food section or make your own. In a pinch you can use fat skimmed from the soup (in which case you may need less water). You can use oil, and your cardiologist will approve, but it won't taste as good! Hamentaschen Â¾ c sugar Â½ c butter or margarine 1 egg 2 T milk 1 t vanilla 2 c flour 2 t baking powder poppy, prune, apricot or your choice of pastry filling (2 Â½ - 3 12 oz. cans for a double recipe) In mixer bowl, beat together sugar and butter till light & fluffy. Add egg, milk & vanilla; beat well. Combine flour & baking powder; stir into creamed mixture. Cover & refrigerate dough 1 hour. On lightly floured surface, roll dough to 1/8-inch thickness. Cut with 3-inch round cookie or biscuit cutter or juice glass. Top each with Â½ t fruit or poppy or prune filling. Shape into triangles by lifting up edges & pinching dough together to make 3 corners. Leave center open. Place on ungreased cookie sheet; bake in preheated 350 oven for 10-12 minutes. (My first batch usually takes a little longer.) Remove from sheet; cool on rack. Make 2 Â½ - 3 dozen. (I always double recipe)

I reckon you could prepare this batter ahead - but I haven't tried it. Drop Doughnuts 1/4 cup butter 1 cup sugar 2 egg yolks, beaten 1 egg, beaten 4 cup unbleached flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 3/4 cup buttermilk OR sour milk icing sugar Cream the butter and sugar. Stir in egg yolks and whole egg; blend. In a separate bowl, sift all dry ingredients except the icing sugar; add to creamed mixture, alternating with buttermilk. Stir to mix all ingredients. Drop spoonfuls of dough into 180C deep fat. Fry a few at a time, to keep fat temperature constant. Turn to brown on all sides. Drain on paper towels; sprinkle with icing sugar. I have made the following recipe a few times. I reckon it would be possible to cut out the dough, then store in the fridge between sheets of plastic wrap. Doughnuts 500g self raising flour 1/8 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg 60g butter 60g sugar 2 eggs about 80ml milk castor sugar 1 lemon Sift flour, salt and nutmeg, rub in butter, add sugar, then well beaten eggs, and sufficient milk to mix into a soft dough. Turn onto a floured board, roll out 1cm thick, cut into rings with a doughnut cutter or 2 cutters, deep-fry till doughnuts are a golden brown, sprinkle with castor sugar and serve hot with slices of lemon. Makes about 15 doughnuts. Orange Doughnuts (ditto above with refrigerating the rounds) 1 3/4 cups self raising flour 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 dessertspoon butter 3 tablespoons sugar grated rind 1 large orange 1 egg, beaten 3 tablespoons milk 2 tablespoons orange juice Sift flour, nutmeg, and salt into a bowl, add butter, sugar and orange rind. Combine the egg, milk and orange juice, and add to dry ingredients. Knead lightly and roll out to 1cm thick. Cut into rounds with a large cutter to form rings. Fry in deep, very hot fat or oil until golden brown. Drain on paper, sprinkle with sugar. And another nice and easy recipe just to make your choices more difficult!! These won't have the holes in the middle, though. Easy Doughnuts 1 1/2 cups flour 1/4 teaspoon salt 2 teaspoons baking powder 2/3 cup milk 2 tablespoons castor icing sugar Sift dry ingredients together and add egg and milk. Batter will be thick. If too thin add a little more flour. Drop by spoonfuls into deep hot fat and cook till browned. Drain off excess fat and roll in sugar. Muffins that Taste Like Doughnuts 1 3/4 cups plain flour 1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon 1/3 cup oil 3/4 cup sugar 1 egg 3/4 cup milk Topping: 1/2 cup melted butter 3/4 cup sugar 1 teaspoon cinnamon Reheat over to 180C and prepare large muffin pans. Combine flour, baking powder, salt, nutmeg and cinnamon. In another bowl combine thoroughly oil, sugar, egg and milk. Add to dry mixture and stir to just combine. Bake for 20-25 minutes. Remove muffins immediately while hot, dip in melted butter then combined sugar and cinnamon. Makes 8-9 large muffins. Variation: Fill pans 1/2 full, put 1 teaspoon jam on top of each and top with the rest of the batter.

Blender 1 1/2 cups of ice 1oz Bacardi (any other rum will change the flavour) 1oz Gin (Tanqueray) 1oz Vodka (Smirnoff or Absolut would work) 2oz Coconut Cream (the one you can get in the mixers section of the liqueur dept of any supermarket) 2oz Mango Nectar (Price Cutter sells Mango "Boing" in the Mexican Products section, that should do it) splash of Grenadine (Easy on it or it would be too sweet or flavoured wierd) I worked in the Mayan Riviera for 4 years, I used to teach this recipe in the cocktail mixing lesson of the resort I worked for, I can assure you this is the original one. Thanks for the ideas, ginger_st_thomas! I wondered if there was a punch that was similar to a "Sea Breeze" (cranberry & grapefruit juice). A cranberry-based punch would probably be best at xmas-time. :)

Cranberry juice cocktail is the universal Holiday mixer as far as I am concerned.
Add vodka and maybe a splash of limoncello, add Southern Comfort and a squeeze of lime, add L'orange vodka and a little club soda add gin and call ita Cape Cod. Add rum and some pineapple juice...
And then there's the "Mitzie"...named for a friend which is equal parts pineapple juice and cranberry juice cocktail with as much Citron vodka as you dare! Shake with ice and serve.

Here's one I've used that went over very well:

Holiday Cranberry Punch

(18 servings)

This recipe was featured in late 1999 in the Food section of the Los Angeles Times. Originally from MissouriÂs former first lady Jean Carnahan, from her book Christmas at the Mansion: Its Memories and Menus.

* 4 C cranberry juice cocktail, chilled
* 2 C orange juice, chilled
* 1 (12-oz.) bottle lemon-lime soda
* 1 ice ring (optional)

Combine the cranberry juice cocktail and orange juice in a punch bowl; add ice ring. Add the lemon-lime soda. Stir to blend.

Try this old Holiday drink from Emeril.

It is called a RED ROOSTER, and you can mix other drinks with it if you want.

Everyone likes this drink, and I am always asked for this easy recipe!

1&1/2 quarts cranbeyy juice cocktail
1~ 6 oz. can frozen orange juice concentrate, defrosted
2 cups of vodka (your choice of brand)

Combine all the ingredients in a large plastic container, and mix well.

Freeze for several hours (it will be slushy)
Scoop into punch bowl or glass pitcher and pour into martini or wine glasses.

Here is another punch that we make for the holidays. Just add rum/alcohol to your taste.Color to a nice red. The limes/mint make a nice contrast with Christmas colors.

We use Barcardi 151 really good Jamacian rum.

1 fresh pineapple, cleaned and crushed (or one can prepared crushed pineapple, including juices)
3 quarts orange juice
10 fresh lemons, squeezed
grenadine, enough to color punch to desired shade
rum, to taste
fresh slices of oranges and lemons or limes
fresh mint leaves (from your garden)

DIRECTIONS

Mix first five ingredients, serve over ice. Garnish with orange,lemon or lime slices and mint leaves.

Those all sound great. I think I'll make one or both of the cranberry/orange combos because they're simple/easy, and will taste and look right for what I want.

This one is really good. I served it at a holiday gethering last year and everyone loved it!

Glacier Punch
Source BH&G Holiday Appetizers 1999

2 c citrus vodka (may sub raspberry or cherry flavored)
2/3 c orange liqueur
2 T kirsch
1/2 c peach schnapps-(my addition)
4 c ice cubes
1 750-ml bottle champagne, chilled
2 c carbonated water, chilled

Sugar (optional)
Ice Brittle

Combine vodka, orange liqueur, kirsch, schnapps and ice cubes in punch bowl. Carefully add champagne and carbonated water. If desired, sweeten with a little sugar. Top with chunks of Ice Brittle.

Ice Brittle: Pour 1 c water into a 15 x 10 x 1 inch pan. Sprinkle surface evenly with edible flowers such as marigold, calendula, viola, pansy or dianthus. Sprinkle surface evenly with 1 c fresh raspberries or other fresh fruit. Freeze 3 hours or overnight. Unmold and break into chunks.

That Glacier Punch sounds like it has some serious kick to it!

I have a bottle of champagne and was thinking it would be good to use in punch. The Champagne Punch definitely wouldn't be icky sweet.

Party, Im just amazed. I came on here to post a thread on finding a punch that was refreshing but not too sweet and hoping for something with cranberry. I saw your post, started reading thru and you're looking for the same thing I am. Maybe you're that long lost twin everyone tells me I have :)

I was doing a search for punches made with Smirnoff Cranberry Vodka and came upon this interesting site. Besides a few drink and punch recipes, this blog really has some neat table scapes for Thanksgiving and some Christmas decor ideas.

As far as a punch, I see that you received some good recipes. I went to a party once where the hostess made a punch with Smirnoff Cranberry Vodka, bottled cranberry juice and a bottle of lemon lime soda. I don't have the recipe with the exact portions of each, so that's what I am searching for.
