What do you (who wear larger sizes) think about the longer tops?

The last thing I need is a long blouse hugging my butt....

Why do they think the larger size women want to wear what the little girls are wearing.

Maybe they need to make some larger sizes just for teens if that's what they want...and something that looks nice on more mature women.

I've found several comfortable/pretty blouses in colors I love...but they are all about 4 inches too long.

I guess I'll have to try to hem them. I don't have the best luck trying that...but I've got to have something to wear.

Also they are making them "fitted"....

I see heavy set young girls wearing them snug tight...Just makes me feel so sorry for them. It's not a flattering thing.

What's wrong with fashion people...I know I need to lose weight...but until then...I need some clothes that make the best of me.

I don't mind longer blouses with a knit top underneath. I leave them unbuttoned, that way they hide the butt. I don't like skin tight anything on anyone.

Bought two pr of capri's with matching tops, and thought I would love them. NOT! Short me, with long tops makes me look even dumpier than I already am.

Took them back.

Motherof3sons- Thank you. It's so funny, my mom and I were saying the same thing yesterday...how many times do you get up to run to the closet, in the middle of the night! LOL Groceries are kind of a split, probably front in the winter (less driveway to plow out...and less steps up to the house) and the back when there's no snow. Iowablue- I'll send you an email, after work. Where does your daugher live? Further south than Pullman? Central Washington is pretty dry (east side of the Cascade Mountains) but parts of eastern Washinton start having trees, again. We live very close to Idaho (about five miles away) and are in an area with trees, rolling hills, creeks and some farmland, also pasture. Further north is more pasture and colder winters...while further south is often more farmland, especially on the Palouse. Spokane is the largest city in eastern Washington (king of in the middle of the state, but only about 15 miles from the Idaho border) and about half hour away from Coeur d'Alene Idaho, which is famous as a summer resort. Coeur d'Alene Lake is one of the larger lakes in the area, but Pend'Oreille is up in Sandpoint, Idaho is also beautiful. There are more lakes and rivers in the northern to central part, of far eastern Washington. One thing about living here, which I'm sure your daughter has mentioned...we have much colder winters (and longer) than you would in the Seattle area (western Washington) and hotter summers, too. That being said, much of eastern Washington and northern Idaho is absolutely beautiful. Further south, there are less trees, but more farmland. It all depends on what you like :)

To me, it looks like the first German kitchen was set up for a cook who spent a lot of time prepping or canning. The work surface in front of the window and next to the sink is perfect for that kind of work. The cook could sit on the stool instead of having to stand up for over an hour while sorting berries for jams. The sink was handy for rinsing the berries or whatever produce was to be prepped for canning. My family did a lot of canning in summer. As a teen I spent countless hours helping sort through and tear stems with leaves off blackcurrants, gooseberries or strawberries. Typically there would be 3-10 kg (6-22 lbs) of berries heaped on the kitchen table. I still make jams (we have mulberry trees) but it's a pain to stand by the kitchen counter for two hours while sorting the berries. Different heights helped contain mess. When sorting berries, I would put a pot on the raised part on my left, if I were sitting in front of the window. I would scoop berries from the sink filled with water and place them on the work surface. As I processed the berries one by one, I would toss them into the pot, and the mess of juice and debris would be contained on the surface in front of me. The pot with the berries would stay clean. So far as I know, Germans have a longtime tradition of garden allotments in cities. Also, I imagine that in the 20's or 30's most foodstuffs required more prep work since there wasn't much food packaging. Grains like rice or buckwheat had to be sorted and debris picked out by hand since they were sold by weight from large sacks. Again, an hour of work before your rice was ready to be put in a pot and boiled. I think storage space is more of an issue now that people have more stuff. There are also more appliances to house. There are several sides to the "dated" concept: 1) Technology development. New appliances and materials make cooking and cleaning easier. Novelties like pull-out shelves make for more efficient storage. Better lighting like can lights banish dark corners. Again, adoption of novel technologies varies by culture. While dishwashers are standard in American homes, many Russians opt not to have them and spend the money on something else - like fixtures for a sauna at a dacha. At the same time recessed lighting is wildly popular in Moscow apartments. People put them even in bedrooms. Which is no surprise given the long and dark winters. 2) Cooking habits and traditions. A family who has a large garden would have different cooking habits than a family that gets all their food from supermarkets. Culinary preferences evolve with time, as well. Some foods that weren't common 50 or more years ago, have become a daily staple. 2) Changing esthetics. This is a highly subjective category, and probably more emotional than practical. Some designs and decors withstand the test of time better than others 3) Societal attitudes. Pre-WWII kitchens were purely utilitarian and separate from the public areas of the home. The modern German kitchen pictures posted by circuspeanut make me think that Germans still tend to be mostly utilitarian about their kitchens. On the other side, many Americans treat their kitchens as a part of the public space and thence as formal showpieces. For Russians, kitchens straddle the boundary between utilitarian and public. Open floor plans aren't as widespread in Moscow, and many people prefer to have kitchens that can be closed off. If there is no formal dining room, formal or holiday meals are usually set up in the living room. However, kitchens are the place for casual (and cozy!) socialization with a friend or two over a supper and/or a cup of tea. That encourages people to make their kitchens presentable to visitors, but not overtly formalized.

gaonmymind- thanks for the mls link, it was interesting. I'm surprised that the RE agent didn't have nicer pictures taken, especially for home at that price point. I suppose that they are not permitted use the ones from the SL mag spread. As to why I don't want a closed of dining room instead, well I think the issue is that the mess is in the kitchen and I want to avoid seeing it from the dining room *and* elsewhere if at all possible. Closing off the dining room would only solve the problem while dining. I would still see the mess from the living room, the foyer, or pretty much anywhere else on the first floor. Closing off one small portion of the kitchen seems like an easy way to contain a good part of the mess to a small, less visible spot. For me washing dishes is drudge work no matter where the location. My proposed scullery has a window and will be just as nice as the kitchen so it's not as if I'm sending myself down to the dungeon to clean up. As far as space, I've always found dishwashing to be a one person task (that person being me) and even when the kids are older and do help, I imagine it will be more along the lines of asking them to unload the dishwasher or to simply load their plate- a one person at a time sort of thing. Even with their help, I'm fairly certain that I will still appreciate having an out of sight spot where I can place dirty pots and pans so that they don't bother me while I spend time with my family in other parts of the house. I'm still in the very early preliminary stages of planning our new build, so I have lots of time to figure how to make an open concept home work for me and our family. I've considered other ways, like a raised island and even a custom build hutch semi-separating the kitchen from the dining space. I may include those ideas along with the scullery, I'm not sure. For now though, I'm really intrigued by the idea of having a scullery space and I plan to continue tweaking my design. I would not be that thrilled with travel to Mexico at all because of safety concerns. Although my friend is considering Mexico for a 50th birthday celebration and since we went to Australia for my 40th, I'd feel obligated to go. When we were planning our wedding, DH and I lived in separate cities, and our extended families were in two different cities. We thought about destinations, but my mother was in her 80's and doesn't really travel that well and doesn't have a passport. So, we went with my hometown since that was the largest group that would likely attend. DH's grandma did fly in, and she did great. MIL paid for her and two aunts' tickets so they could attend. We really didn't want to get married in place where our mothers and grandmother could not make it. OTOH, DH's cousin planned a destination wedding in the Dominican Republic because he knew his family couldn't really attend there, especially his mother, who has had some mental health issues. This was really sad. The aunt may actually may have some sort of autism, but since she's in her 60's she would have never been diagnosed with it.

Since I have no arse to speak of and all belly, I like them. They cover up my stomach, while not making such a eye sore of "looking like a lost my arse in a poker game." I just buy a size bigger than I am. If I buy my tops. Mostly I sew my own, then alternate them, and I don't have to make them so snug.

I like to watch qvc on tv, and they show a lot of "tunic" tops, but like Glenda, I just feel dumpy in tops that are too long, like a tunic top would be. I like tops that are not snug, but not baggy either, and hit me just at the top of the thigh. I also wear a t-shirt or tank top and overblouse jacket-style. These help smooth out the "trouble areas," if you know what I mean!! LOL!

Patti, why don't you check with a couple local cleaners to see what they charge to shorten a blouse. It might be within your budget. Some years ago I decided I was absolutely DONE with shortening my own pants, and it's been a blessing to get help with that!

I'd rather have longer, then being afraid my tummy will show if I raise my arms!! No one needs to see that!

Teresa, we must be built a little alike! I don't want my tummy showing either so must buy or order tops at least 28 inches long and 30" is even better. :o)

I don't think the long blouses hide anything...they just accentuate...and from behind watching a big woman...they show their butt cheeks rolling up and down.

Tunics don't really work on NON STRAIGHT shapes.

I'm not sayin', but Muffin Tops are the thing around here. Is it still okay to say "fat" or is that outlawed now? Anyway, the fat girls wear pants about two sizes too small and have the.. well, you know.

I'm thinking sprinkles will be next! Yummmmm-EEEEEEEE! *wink*

Too tight is tasteless and never was for me even when I could flaunt it.

However, I do like some length on my tops to hide figure flaws, but the material has a lot to do with what clings to the caboose so I'm cautious about that as well.

Im with you - the longer tunics, etc., are OK, except when they are shaped like a cereal box. I remember my Jr. Hi music teacher was called a tomato on 2 toothicks. She was very heavy on top and had the skinniest legs. Tops were longer then, and women didn't wear pants that much - especially to work, so it was even worse. I don't think it stopped her though because she taught some of the best-known singers of the day.

I wish they would put some style in these new tops - they have beautiful colors, but the prints are huge and remind me of my music teacher. They make you look like Sponge-Bob.

Terri, their mom is probably the lady beside them wearing the same funky unflattering tourniquet around her waist! Only difference is that she has the stretch marks hangin' over too.
At least 'round here it is.

I like the longer tops too.My problem is not being able to find cute ones,other than plain old T-shirts,that are long enough!LOL I got a new catalog the other day with "large" women's sizes and every one that I though was cute was 27 or 28 inches long.That would cover my boobs maybe.LOL I don't like the fitted ones either,and I like fabrics that give but don't cling.I like my big belly covered and have to have a top that is at least 31 inches long to feel comfortable.The 32's are fine but I don't like the ones longer than that because when I sit down they are caught under my butt and pulled across my belly. Very uncomfortable.I probably should just start making my own again but it has been so long since I have sewn anything,I can imagine what it would look like.Besides,there's no place near me where I can buy fabric! Well,guess I'll just stick with my T-shirts!LOL

I am a large woman and no matter what I wear, I still look like a large woman because that is what I am! I dislike the clingy fabrics that they use to make the clothing for the younger ones. Why in the world would a large woman want to wear something that clings to and emphasizes every roll and bump. Really?!? I spoke to the local manager of one of the chain stores which carries clothing for larger women (Addition Elle's) and she said that the buyers and fashion coordinators from head office come to the store two or three times a year and they are like sticks! What are they doing making the decisions about what clothing to buy and carry in their stores for larger women. Oooohh - this topic really irks me (can't you tell??).

And as for the young ones with the rolls hanging out of their jeans, well, don't get me started!

I am disgusted with all these shirts being made like a maternity top! What the heck is up with that??? Just cause I am fat doesn't mean I want to look like someone pregnant with their menapause baby!!!

I am 4'10 and DON'T like shirts coming down to my knees. But the petite shirts are just too tight around the gut.

I hate having to buy cloths!

I think it really depends on how a person is built. I think the long tops look good on some women. I think I look better in a shorter fitted top (not so fitted that it is tight though).

I'm short and the very long tops don't do a thing for me but I do like the little tops that were referred to as "maternity tops." I feel as if they hide a lot of flaws and are very cute and fun looking.

I don't like the tunic length tops but I have to have my shirts and blouses at least 30-31 inches. I'm 5'6" and that's a perfect length for me. I have found a couple of large women catalogs that I order clothes from that I like. But I'm long waisted so I have trouble with buying pants. It's sad that large women are so restricted in buying clothes, but I guess we're all built differently and manufacturers mainly make clothes for the mainstream sizes.

Fortunately I have found stores that I like and since I'm not a "clothes horse" like I used to be when I was young and in corporate world.

I am 5'9" tall, but all legs. I am high waisted as it is, so these longer tops go down a mile from where my waist is. Seems to me that the tops are being made longer to compensate for the low-rise jeans that are being sold now. Maybe the reasoning was to hide the butt-crack that inevitably shows if you bend over wearing low-rise.

The entire large sized fashion (??) industry can be summed up in two words....BAH-Humbug!!!! They think that every large sized person is 12' tall with a scooped neck measurement of 24".....
I guess you noticed :^) that I have a hard time finding clothes and I have to wear dress clothes 6 days a week....Yikes!!

I like tops longer then my waist, but not tunic tops. I am short and it is a really unflattering look. I like tops that are about 5-6 inches below my waist with the sides slit a couple of inches. And not too tight, but not baggy either. I absolutely hate the 'maternity' top look. When is it going to change?

Don't get me going on the tops young women wear especially the plus size ones. If you got the figure, flaunt it but please don't exposure all those rolls of fat. I saw a young woman at Costco the other day, both DH and I thought we were going to lose lunch. She had on a spaghetti strap tank top. It was about 2 or 3 sizes too small. I don't think she realized how truly bad she looked. Her boobies were falling out of the front AND sides. She had rolls and rolls of fat hanging out all over the low cut jeans. The way she acted I think she thought she was sexy. She had no clue, I felt so sorry for her.

So...how do you measure yourself to figure out the length of the shirt you should be wearing? From the shoulder to the hip? I like them long enough to cover my gut at least...LOL I have no waist to speak of. Do you measure from your arm pit to hip for your waist measurement?

Deb, the measurement for the length of a shirt is usually taken down the back from the top of the back/bottom of the neck area to whatever length you want.

I like the longer tops but not with the banded or elasticized bottoms! I'm a pear-shaped woman and don't need anything hugging my bottom unless it's a really cute man! tee hee......

Over my adult life of forty plus years, I have been both fat and thin, and I always like longer tops. If a top doesn't cover my behind, I don't wear it in public, unless I am a size six or less, which isn't going to happen again in my lifetime!

So a top has to be at least thirty inches long for me to consider wearing it.

What gets me, is the plus size catalogs that show tops on thin models, and the tops seem to come half-way down their thighs, but are described as being only 28 inches long. I thought models were tall, but these women must me short for the shirts to fall like that. Twenty-eight inches is nowhere long enough to cover my behind!

What do you (who wear larger sizes) think about the longer tops?
