I'm just like your mom - dislike entertaining people and won't do it - I won't host a function. I don't like unexpected company hanging around for more than a few minutes and don't want to be company for more than a few minutes!

If I invite someone over, that's another story - I can make exceptions for someone I WANT to be with. When I have someone drop in on me - I let them know it's time to go after a short amount of time. I excuse myself, saying I gotta be somewhere soon - I just don't have good 'entertaining' skills - got too much I would rather be doing/need to be doing. I CAN entertain, but choose NOT to.

Rude? Perhaps. Antisocial? Probably.

I hate entertaining. The planning. The cleaning. The shopping. The cooking. The actual event. Even the clean up. But sometimes ya gotta. Like when a daughter graduates. Good luck.

Stacy, I don't see a problem with your SIL taking over and you letting her. I think it's a great idea..that way you can focus on Sid...and what this all means to her. Not stressing over the cooking, cleaning and "just rightness" of the yard.

Mine first will be graduating next year. ~I hope~... but there will be no big party...and probably about 3 guests beyond immediate family that will attend the ceremony with us.

I love having company and planning and all the shopping. The cleaning I could do without. We have some kind of family thing quite often and I really do enjoy it. In past years, I have planned and had really great big birthday get togethers for my Mother's birthdays with out door canopies and folding tables, and they all turned out well. We don't have to rent anything as we are well supplied with everything. Most of our get togethers are pitch in and all the family will really bring a lot of food with me doing a lot of cooking as I really love to cook and bake. The last birthday party I planned for my Mother was when she turned 91. I decided to hold it in our church basement and invited all the church memebers plus all of our relatives, many from out of state. It was such a surprise to Mother as she was just in church that day and all these friends and family showed up to attend church and then had this big pitch in dinner in the basement. I have never seen so much good food. It will always be one of my favorite memories. I hope your party turns out well.

I don't mind entertaining at all, as long as I have 2 weeks to plan for an event. LOL! I just do a bunch of cook ahead stuff so on the day of the event I can actually enjoy it.

Entertaining is a lot of work and doing it well is a skill-set that takes awhile to develop. If your mom didn't do it, it's not wonder that you don't like it either. Don't worry about. There are other ways to make people feel special.

I love entertaining, but I usually have lots of help. I didn't learn a lot from my mom because even though she loved to have parties and get-togethers once she got re-married her new husband excercised lots of control over the festivites.

In my husbands large, extended family people are quick to jump in and offer and bring something! Even at my son's graduation last year we had over 150 people and most of my SIL's helped. I do have party items that I box up and take out only for parties (tablecloths, party tent, ash trays, serving platters). Lots of times when I'm at the dollar store I'll look at something and think that would be great for serving olives, chips or something!

I even make a few notes the following morning of how much we had of certain items and if they went over well or not.

Party hosting CAN be an acquired skill!

My turn for hostessing ladies luncheon, at our condo clubhouse, June. Should be 20 plus!

I don't have to cook, just have the beverages, eating/serving utensils, plates, etc. The gals bring their potluck dishes! Two other gals are gonna help me!

Count me as one that doesn't entertain. Have done it in the past but would refer to have specials occasions out and
walk away from the mess.

LOL at so many of you...what is sooo funny is my sis is like the best hostess in the world she goes all out and is just like going crazy because they won't be here til the night of Syd's grad. party so she is like have you done this and this and this and I am like NO but I did order a cake and she was silent for a min. and said well thats good....LOL

I do love enteraining I just don't have the skills I host Thanksgiving and Christmas for the family every year here but they are not nice formal parties just thrown together at the last min...I do love having everyone here...
But for this knowing that their are lots of little kids and I have no little kid entertainment is why it is at my bros. house he has gk's so he has tons of stuff for them to do....
