Am I Really That Weird??

I don't own a cell phone, and really don't want or need one. People are shocked when I tell them this, but it's true. I can't think who I would call, unless it was an emergency, and then, of course, it would be wonderful to have one. Am I the only one who feels this way?

I did not have a cell till recently. But it was a savings for me since on the land line, my sister and all my kids are long distance calls. With the cell phone, I am not spending any more than I was before, and I have lots of long distance minutes included.

kH is your alkalinity. The test is available from any pond/aquarium/pet store. If the pH maxes out the test, I would get a high range pH test kit. don't add ANYTHING to reduce the pH. Does aqualife complete alter the pH? If so, stop using it. Dramatic changes in the pH can cause the symptoms you are describing. That is why I wanted you to test the kH. kH is what stabalizes the pH. A low kH and the pH zig zags all over the place. New plants can also mean parsaites. Most plant dealers don't treat for parasites. So that could also be the problem here. Foam around the falls is just excessive organics or DOCs (dissolved organic compounds). Water changes should remove that. step one: additional tests step two: stabalize water step three: treat for parasites Time is of the essence, if the koi are already laying over you need to act quickly!!

I buy the single fans since they are cheaper and I wouldn't be able to afford some of the newer lilies as double fans. Just like seeds, I'm willing to wait a little until they bloom to offset the price. As far as bonues go, I'd rather have bonus of fans of the lily I purchased than something I don't like. I've thrown out many a bonus because of this. And I've never noticed this "bonus policy" except in the daylily world! I always thought it was nice, but strange. I don't get bonuses at Walmart, so I wouldn't expect one here. Nice, though, don't get me wrong. As far as the auctions, I got rid of a ton of daylilies in 2012 so I could make room for some newer and fancier ones. I've gotten some great ones this year with some good prices. I've got about 10 more lilies on my list to go and I've already purchased 5 in the Fall and have 7 coming in the Spring. I can't wait!!!

Is it really that they were making their visit conditional on whether or not Dad paid for the yearbooks or just that the need to have the yearbooks paid for happened to coincide with the phone call about the visit? I would think that this kind of timing coincidence would be a pretty common occurence, given that there are just lots of things to pay for, and on a very frequent basis, when you choose to have kids. Most kids get yearbooks, and in the grand scheme of things it's not an outrageous expense. Yearbooks are there to be mementos of school, and most of us keep ours forever, show kids, grandkids or just look at every once in a while ourselves through the years. Also don't see any problem with occasionally having a friend over, and conversely don't see it as anything to praise that a kid NEVER has a friend over. In this particular instance, I don't see anything coming from the kids in terms of requests as outrageous or anything to get upset over. I'm pretty sure the OP meant that SS's yearbook would be the additional one being paid for, not a friend's. (But if it WAS for a friend, that would be an unnecessary and presumptuous request for sure.) I do agree that, as with so many things, it's common courtesy to clue other members of the household in to things that will be going on in the house ---especially if they expect your help with any part of it--- with as much advance notice as possible.

Okay, I was out about an hour pruning away. The Love Song looks like wow..... 3 thicker green branches left with some leaving happening. Put it this way, what the heck happened to all the branches from last season. It's like they disintegrated over the Winter. I did cut dead away, but geez not that much. Oh well, hopefully those 3 thick green branches will be enough to keep it going.....

I don't have one either. LOL!! Sometimes it would be nice, and I do think about what would happen if my car broke down or something. One of these days maybe.

Never had one until last couple of years and mainly for emergency use. I have a tracfone, pay for 1 year of service and have loads of minutes.

I have a small thrift shop and did have a land line phone but had it disconnected and will use just the cell phone. I don't get but maybe one or two calls there in a months time that relate to business. I was getting 3 and 4 calls a day trying to sell me insurance or something business related. Told them I'm just a teeny little shop out in the boonies and have on interest in what they are selling.

I had the landline phone put in when I couldn't get service in my area with the cell, but they put in a tower close by and now I get good service.

I have only given out the number to my kids so if I happen to be online with my dialup and they need to reach me they can call on my cell phone. I spend entirely too much time on this computer.lol.

Forgot to say that my phone has none of the fancy stuff, no camera, etc. and I know nothing about 'texting' and don't want to know, it's strictly for a call person to person.

I have a cellphone with camera and internet...couldn't live without it.

I have one... for the free long distance.

But I do not have an ATM or debit card!

I don't think you are weird. People have different wants and needs. I've had a cell phone for 7 or 8 years and love it. I use it more than my land line.

I still miss the rotary phones...we have a pay as you go cell phone for emergency when driving and DH uses it work the odd work call. Until I need one I won't bother. People are so plugged in these days to everything do they even notice their surroundings anymore? Rush, rush, rush. I like a few moments of peace and quiet to myself.

I don't think you are weird at all.

I don't think you are weird. DH and I both have Tracfones, but probably use less than 200 minutes a year combined! I feel like I need one since we have a teen DD and I like her to stay in touch.

My cell phone use goes way back to the era of "bag phones." I drive alone most of the time and feel more secure with a phone at hand. Still, I have a contract for minimal minutes and don't use it often.

I was happy to have my cell phone a few weeks ago when I got a flat tire on a country road.

I'd have agreed, some years ago, but it's next to impossible to find a pay phone these days, if you have an emergency when on the road (and who carries change, anymore, anyway?)

And I find that since my cell phone has a greater range of 'free' calls than my land line, I save money when I use it to call my sister, brother and Dh's work phone. So I'm actually able to talk more for less $$$ with my cell.

It's nice to have when travelling. And I mainly got it when DD started driving, so that in case of an emergency, she could reach me anytime.

It's come in pretty handy over the years.

We only have cell phones and have had them since they first came out and were literally "bag phones." DH got me my first one b/c I used to be on the hwy a lot going to visit an elderly cousin. She has since died, but now I go to visit DD#2. He felt better w/ me having one and I do too. Never had a problem not having a land line and it's sure saved some money.

We never wanted one. We were perfectly content with not having one especailly since we don't get cell service up in the mountains where we live. And neither one of us is much of a phone talker. I would rather email someone then talk to them.

But then DH's company sent around a memo saying people weren't suppose to make personal calls from their desks anymore, because it is distracting to other people working. It went on to say that they can use their cell phones in an empty conference room or outside. So we broke down and got one. He works a long distance away and only comes home on the weekend. There are times either he or I have to call in the middle of day. It can't wait till the evening.

I hate the fact that we have another bill to pay monthly for something neither one of us wanted.

Funny enough, my cell phone rang just as I started to read this post - lol.
I didn't have one before I started this job - my daughter did and I liked knowing she could phone me anytime if she was in trouble.
With the job I now have, where I have 4 buildings to run I'd be lost without my cellphone.
I flushed it one morning and had to let it dry out for 24 hours - it was a long day of not being able to call service people or my management office if I needed them.
Another day I lost the darn thing - had to back track and finally found it in the work room of one of the buildings.
I can honestly say I wouldn't want to be without my cell nowadays.
My boss pays for my landline, so it doesn't cost me very much to buy my own minutes for my cell.

In CA., there will be no cell phones while driving! lol I don't own a cell phone either. However in California, they are getting rid of pay phones - too many people have cell phones and it is a losing proposition for the pay phones. P4roblem arises if I am in trouble - I know one ONE pay phone in my town! Scary...

My husband bought one for me...He insisted that it was necessary for any emergency I might have...I hate cell phones and I hate the way people use cell phones...I have remembered twice to put mine in my purse...I'm not sure I even remember how to use it...if you want to talk to me...catch me at home...I'm nearly always there..

why do you think it is that the minute people start talking on their cell phones, they raise their voice at least two levels so everyone around them has to hear the conversation.

I didn't have one for the longest time and my DD got me a pay as you use phone for Christmas...I'm still trying to figure out how to use it, but it sure does come in handy in an emergency...We deliver Meals on Wheels and while delivering, we also make sure that person is OK. Quite a few times, we couldn't get into a home and had to call a neighbor, relative or 911.
I really hate to see people driving and talking on their phone..I honestly think all states should have a law...Just my 2 cents.....

"However in California, they are getting rid of pay phones - too many people have cell phones and it is a losing proposition for the pay phones."

The reason California started getting rid of payphones had nothing to do with cell phones. It was because it was getting to be too expensive to repair the payphones because of all of the damage and destruction when folks would bash the heck out of them to get the money from inside.

The other half of the reason is because too many payphones were being used to set up drug deals.

Since having a cell phone once saved my life...I strongly suggest having one.

I started to black out in a fast food place, made it out to my car, and then couldn't breathe. I managed to pull my cell phone out of my handbag, and call 911. I was so close to unconsciousness, I couldn't even explain to the operator exactly where I was, and I passed out...but they traced my location...just in time.
I came to consciousness as paramedics were pulling me out of my car, after reviving me with CPR.

Without that cell phone...I wouldn't be typing this post.

Nope, I think it would be weird to get a cell phone if you have do want or need for one. If you got one just so people would stop saying "You seriously don't have a cell phone???" that would be weird. ;o)

I have a cell phone. It makes phone calls. It doesn't take pictures or connect to the internet. There is a datebook feature and it will send/receive text messages. I vaguely know how to use those features, but I am far from competent at them so I don't use them. ;o) I called DH once for information. He was annoyed, said "I sent that to you in a text message 2 hours ago!" Why would he do that? I said, well, you can tell me how to get the message to read it or you can just tell me information now verbally.

Now DH is a techno-geek. He works in IT, does IT support calls sometimes, and carries a Blackberry like his life depends on it. Every couple months he is on call for 1 week, during which he receives calls, texts and emails constantly. He can be on the internet and actually fix some tech problems from his blackberry.

My little cell phone is a convenience and peace of mind. His blackberry is his personal assistant.

I have a cell phone which is off most of the time. Never on while I'm at home, unless me and the phone are out in the back forty. When I leave the house, the phone goes with me, and turned on and fully charged. There are only a very few people who even have the number, but they can reach me if it's necessary (if I'm in an area which has service..it's spotty around here) but I can call if I'm in trouble. Again, a service problem.

We will be switching providers as soon as our contract is up to get a more reliable signal, and probably will reduce our rate as well. Living in the boonies as we do, and with DH out on service calls all by his lonesome in sometimes remote areas, cell phones have become a necessity. You wouldn't believe how I had to nag for him to get a bag phone, back in the day, so that he could call if he got in trouble. And he did call, several times. Now he feels naked if his phone isn't attached to his suspenders!

I got a Virgin Mobile pay-as-you go phone 6-7 yrs. ago when I was doing the 900 mi. run from NE FL to kids in Houston. I have to "top-off" $20 every 3 months. I have a current balance of almost $150. Only my kids & DH know the #. I have the phone for emergencies (have a 11 yr. old vehicle) -- Oh, & DD having a meltdown when I'm at WM IS an emergency! And when I was watching the 4 young GK's while their Mom was out of town, DS had to call me 10 times a day to make sure I was OK & on schedule with carting the kids around. :-)

I love my cell phone and it was a gift from our youngest daughter and her husband for my birthday one year. I now pay the monthly fee of $10 to them each month. All in our family have cell phones and I use mine more than the home phone. Mine is never turned off unless it is someplace like a doctor's office or church. It is with me all the time, even when I am out mowing. Could live with out it, but would really miss it. My kids and I are in touch many times a day.

We didn't have one for the longest time, but when it became an option to use a cell phone for higher-speed internet access, we got them and got rid of the land lines, so it's an economic wash, but better service.

Woody NEVER wanted to have one, but he has one now and even Mr. Stubborn will admit that it has come in SO handy when one of us is away from the other.

Years ago when traveling home at night my car broke down. Grandson, 3 and I were stranded and no phone. That is when I decided I needed a cell phone. It was only used for emergency purposes.

Now each of us has a cell phone so we can keep in contact with each other. I also got one for my elderly parents in FL which only costs me $10 a month on our family plan. This way I know that they have a way of getting help when they are away from home.

I love that I can call long distance free evenings and weekends so I save money on my land line. Have been thinking of getting rid of the land line for quite some time as we rarely get calls on it.

I didn't think I'd ever want a cell phone, but this spring my car's engine died, on an Interstate - no cell phone, and friend with me didn't have one either. The kindness of two strangers - with their cell phones - made it possible for me to call for help getting us and the car to a safe place. I'm getting a Tracphone this week, as we're going out of town this next weekend. My daughter, and also her kids, have phones with all the bells and whistles, and I wonder what their phone bills are like. I don't understand people who attend events, and leave their phones on, and one invariably rings - how rude! I'm sure it's not a real emergency in most cases - they just want to be tethered to the outside world. Not me!

I fought tooth and nail against getting a cell phone. I considered it a leash.

I've had one for what seems forever now and boy was I wrong. I don't sit around the house. I'm always on the go and I don't always have a plan. My phone is MY connection to family and friends. I can call DH and let him know I'll be gone or to stop at the store or remind him of whatever. DS doesn't like to talk, he's a busy guy, but he'll always read and respond to a text. DD and I will call just to see if we're near one another to meet up for some "mom and me" time. When I'm picking up a friend I can call her as I drive down her street. When I carpool with several cars of Red Hatters we're able to stay in touch for unscheduled stops, wrong turns or change of plan. DS rides a motorcycle. I don't want to have to come home hours later to find out he's crashed. I like knowing I'm reachable immediately. When DH goes to the store and has to make a decision on something I sent him for they don't have,he calls. Car trouble? Call home or road service from the safety of my car. Out in a crowd and lose someone? Call them. See something I want to think about for later? Take a picture.See a drunk on the road? I call it in.

That one sweet little device is a phone, a message center,a timepiece,a memo,a date book,a camera,an address book,a calculator and an alarm clock. How great is that?

I have a basic plan with minimal minutes and tons of night and weekend minutes. I have never gone over and I pay around $40 a month. My phone is on 24/7. I rarely make a call over 5 minutes long and most are probably less than that. But I sure use it and I would feel naked without it.

It's almost time for a new one and this one will have internet access. Woo-Hoo.

No you're not weird. You just don't miss what you don't have. I've been there.

Mine is strictly for emergencies. I live in the country and if my car breaks down in the middle of nowhere, I can call for assistance. Otherwise it never gets used.

One day, years ago, I didn't make it to work because of bad weather and road closures. My DH gave me a cell for Christmas and said he worried that I could be in a ditch somewhere, and no one would ever know. I thought that was just the sweetest gift he ever gave me.

I never had one until my DH passed away then my DD thought I should have one for when I go out shopping, which proved to be very funny I was in Lowes checking out and heard "anchors away" playing (we were retired navy) I thought thats neat until a man behind me tapped me on the shoulder and said "I believe your cell phone is ringing" but I still have trouble using it.

Every person (four of us) in my family has a cellphone. I wouldn't be without one. We keep in touch and if my kids are out late,I call them. My sister has a cellphone only, she gave up her land line in her house.

I would not be without one but I only have it in case of emergency. I got the cheapest plan I could get. I have only 100 free minutes each month and it costs me $ 29.00 per month. I do some traveling alone in the evenings and it gives me a sense security to have it if I need it.

I, who got in trouble here for kidding people about mis-spelling "weird" the other day, when they were correct, guess that I'm weird - no cell ... thus far.

Though I get few calls (and seldom make any that are time/place-crucial), maybe time to get one of the minimal ones, for, while I consider it dependable, I drive a 20-year-old car. Daughter subscribed to CAA for me for Christmas about three years ago, and I've renewed it. My friend used to help me out if I was having car troubles ... but I buried him, a couple of years ago.

If my car breaks down on the road ... as things stand, I can sit there and contemplate my situation. If I'm on freeway, a cop may come along ... after a while. Otherwise, maybe ride my thumb home ... but that's not such a good idea on the freeway, as hitch-hiking is illegal there.

As I left a nearby village the other night, a car with hood up was sitting by a large waterhole/small lake, from which they'd dug thousands of tons of gravel, years ago - but which is now a prolific fishing hole.

Stopped to ask the driver about trouble - he'd left lights on, dead battery ... had called CAA. Having jumper cables, I hooked up to his battery, started the car.

Then he got out his little box with the screen on top and a bunch of keys below and started punching different spots on the screen with a small probe ... calling CAA to tell them not to come.

I think that I'll call CAA and tell them that they owe me $5.00 off of next year's fee.

I hope that you all have an enjoyable week.

We got a cell phone plan 6 years ago when DS started driving and DD went off to college. Easy way to keep in touch. And we use up no minutes between us so with DS now in NYC area it's cheaper than calling him on the land line.

And we get a great deal thru my company. In fact, one time when we stopped in the store to buy new phones, the gentlemen helping us said "Wow, you get a better discount than even I do"!
